thenobsta··on Show HN: Silly math games to make learning fun for K through 3rd grade
Ah! Not me. I should have made that clear. A Mathematician named Alexander Zvonkin wrote it. The book's super well written and is full of useful ideas though!

A plug for "Math from Three to Seven: The Story of a Mathematical Circle for Preschoolers" seems warranted here. It has great ideas for fun things to do with kids as well.

My daughter is in 1st grade and really enjoys playing blackjack with me(Dad). It's an amazing metaphor for addition and gives some good entrypoints for talking about probability and decision making.

We play for candy. Surprisingly she hasn't eaten any of it yet. She seems to be balancing her desire to beat dad by having more candy and her desire to eat candy. It's been great bonding time too.

Next up, a similar game with other operations.

thenobsta··on Theory-building and why employee churn is lethal to software companies
I'm curious about the skepticism. Could you elaborate? The explanation of tacit knowledge hit me quite viscerally. I see a part of my engineering work as turning tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge.
thenobsta··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
+1 for Vornado. I just had a blade break on my fan. Called in and got a replacement blade in 3 days. Great support. The life of my fan is extended.
thenobsta··on Can brown noise turn off your brain?
Both brown noise and shoegaze remind me a lot of the Safe and Sound Protocol by Porges. It's a therapeutic intervention designed to increase cues of safety by filtering common music into the range of human speech. The creator of the protocol has done some research demonstrating efficacy and come up with a plausible theory for why his protocol works[1]. Maybe his work could add color as to why shoegaze and brown noise is so impactful for some people? Not really sure, but seems related.

thenobsta··on How to parent more predictably (2018)
Agreed, My (almost) 3yr old responds really well to this technique. I'll give give her a 10 or 5 min heads up and reminders at each halving of the countdown. When we get to zero she's ready for action. I almost never have issues when I do this. But, if I forget, I'll often get pushback.
thenobsta··on Next Week’s Maker Faire in San Mateo Could Be Bay Area’s Last
Whoa! Seems like Halted was sold to Excess Solutions[1], and that Excess Solution has a retail store[2]. This is really great news! I too was heartbroken. What a great place to visit, geek out about history, and buy cool things.

Seems to be open source -- https://github.com/termux/termux-app.
thenobsta··on Keeping a plaintext “did” file
I do that with my org files. It's great. Keybase is great.
thenobsta··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2018)
DeepScale | Software Engineer | Mountain View, CA | Full-time, Intern | Onsite

By building extensible software that can be used for all levels of vehicle automation. This allows us to start saving lives and deploying our software in mass production now! thenobsta··on Conversations with a six-year-old on functional programming
Related, "Math from Three to Seven" by Alexander Zvonkin[1] is an excellent book on discussing math with young kids.

thenobsta··on I Wrote Down Everything I Learned While Programming for a Month
I'm starting to begin the same set of things(logging, trackign...). Just curious, do you have any tools you like?
thenobsta··on Great things and people that I discovered, learned, read, met, etc in 2017
I'll second Finite and Infinite Games. It's kinda weird, but carries many interesting thoughts.
thenobsta··on Some people swear by Alcoholics Anonymous and others despise it
I'm not an alcoholic, but am very familiar with AA. The assent to a higher power thing is tough for many that I know in AA, but they still find benefit in it(AA). I tend to think that the higher power thing is useful to help externalize some of the bad things that happens in life (while still realizing that you have to deal with them). The narrative would be like, "This bad thing was put in my life by something beyond my control. It's not my fault this bad thing happened to me." I think this is useful for both historical trauma and issues those in AA deal with in the present.
thenobsta··on Car Cost per Year - New vs Used
+1 This is the way to do it. This method is generally safe with other reliable brands like honda and some nissan's.
thenobsta··on An Open Letter to the Uber Board and Investors
As I understand it, the Lyft vetting is more intense than Uber's. So many Lyft drivers can be Uber drivers, but the reverse may not be true. I could be wrong though, my only data points are talking with drivers and therefore anecdotal or hearsay.
thenobsta··on Inflammation halts fat-burning
Beyond what gtrubetskoy mentions (those are the basics which one should always follow), fish oil[1] and tumeric[2] have powerful anti-inflammatory effects.

thenobsta··on Tips for Reading Code (2014)
Try reading it backwards. It forces your brain to look at the be text differently.

This trick is also useful proofreading documents you've read many times already.

thenobsta··on Finance is Not the Economy
Can you share some evidence for people not on a throne?
thenobsta··on Bayesian Analysis of Racial Bias in Police Shootings in the United States
I think a great follow up to this is, what would these numbers look like if the majority of police didn't carry guns?

I'm not sure how you'd get a sense of this though. Maybe data from other countries and comparison of security guard death rates. Both of these ideas are long shots.

thenobsta··on The Moral Economy of Tech
tldr: learn from history

Apropos as YC looks into giving everyone money and designing cities from first principles.

thenobsta··on All the best advice we could find on how to get a job
I understand the pop up.

However, the sign-up should not take me away from the article. I mean, putting in my email took me to another page in the same tab (not a new one). Also, The landing page post-giving-you-my-email gave me another sign-up pop up. Both these things are super annoying.

Content is good though.

thenobsta··on Ask HN: Would you pay for fuzzing as a service?
Yeah, Tinfoil's got a good product. They're definitely still active and I think they're business is doing pretty well.
thenobsta··on Docker Datacenter – develop and manage apps at any scale
Amen, it's a landgrab right now.
thenobsta··on The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, a public live-in high school

thenobsta··on My Internship Experiences at Pixar, Google, and Two Sigma
^^^ This is why I love HN.

Thanks!

thenobsta··on Ask HN: Mental fatgue after a long day, what do you do to sharpen your brain?
This is a win! I'll try this.
