thenewnewguy··on Stack Exchange is not interested in cooperating with the community, is it?
> Judging just by the editorializing title

The HN title is the title of the linked SE post (with a prefix stripped).

thenewnewguy··on The few remaining uses of the name “Macintosh”
The drive is the issue, linux just happens to a better job of using other resources to improve HDD performance. Said linux installation would still be much faster/more responsive on an SSD. For the prices that Apple charges for their computers they should include a low-tier SSD at the very least.
thenewnewguy··on Visa Buys Plaid
I have no idea then, it's worked for me in the past - Plaid asks me to give them the 2FA auth code I receive via text.
thenewnewguy··on Away’s former CEO is returning as its co-chief
As far as I can tell those are all events that were taking place in the real world and were also organized on/protested on Twitter - rather than Twitter being the cause and/or sole location of them.
thenewnewguy··on Away’s former CEO is returning as its co-chief
Whether or not FB meddling influenced the result of the US election is questionably uncertain at best, and regardless Russia isn't an internet mob.
thenewnewguy··on Away’s former CEO is returning as its co-chief
> But in these times people or rather mobs have got that power - for better or worse.

Is this really true? It seems like social media has a relatively limited impact on companies/countries on any scale longer than a week. Most social media outrage seems to just result in an apology by the company and perhaps some weak action, and everybody forgets about it a few days later.

Remember when the whole internet collectively tried to stop the FCC from repealing net neutrality? Or Article 13? Or the constant complaints about demonetization of content on YouTube? Internet mobs never seem to get anything meaningful done.

Are you trying to use a business account or something? Otherwise I have no clue.
thenewnewguy··on Ask HN: What has your work taught you that other people don't realize?
Lying typically refers to intentional deceit (as in you know what you are saying is false, or at the very least you don't care if what you say is true or not), so you can not be unaware you are lying.
thenewnewguy··on Ask HN: What has your work taught you that other people don't realize?
Traditional view: Jobs with a high amount of physical labor are low skill, so people with more skills (i.e. intelligence) have jobs with less physical labor.

Your parent's opinion: This view is incorrect, people with higher social status, not higher intelligence, receive jobs with less physical labor.

thenewnewguy··on Visa Buys Plaid
What type of 2FA are you using? I have the default (SMS based) and it works for me.
thenewnewguy··on The Status of HTTP/3
Do you know where I can watch the status on that?
thenewnewguy··on Visa Buys Plaid
> does not work if you have 2FA enabled

Plaid definitely works with BoA + 2FA, at least as of about a month ago when I had to use it.

thenewnewguy··on How to Get Vaccinated Without Parental Consent
Trying to teach the science behind vaccines, climate change, HIV/AIDS, or any other common denial topic is a losing battle. There will always be a new conspiracy theory to believe in. Knock one common denial argument down and 10 spring up to take its place.

We actually need to focus on teaching trust in scientists and the scientific method. You can't reasonably expect people to understand all these complex modern innovations and concepts to the level where they can easily identify hoaxes. You can expect people to realize who the experts in each field are and find the consensus among their opinions.

thenewnewguy··on OpenBSD won't update Firefox, advises users to switch to ESR
The "fancy update policy" being 'latest FF stable uses latest rust stable', which seems like a pretty reasonable policy to me.
thenewnewguy··on Study Confirms Climate Models Are Getting Future Warming Projections Right
In the US many (most?) prominent members of the Republican Party (our right wing/conservative political party) deny the existence of global warming/climate change.
thenewnewguy··on Linus: Don't Use ZFS
There is an "approved" method - write an publish your own kernel module. However if your module is not GPL licensed it cannot be published in the linux kernel itself, and you must keep up with the maintenance of the code. This is a relatively fair requirement imo.
thenewnewguy··on The MTA is going after an Etsy artist over a New York subway map it didn’t make
> Again I don't necessarily think this is a good use of government funds or time, but I don't believe the copyright claim is compeletely invalid.

Maybe you missed this line from the article:

> But there is a potentially critical flaw in that logic. The MTA created The Weekender in 2011, two years after Berman created his map, which he uploaded to Wikipedia in 2009.

thenewnewguy··on How anti-cheats catch cheaters using memory heuristics
> and we refer to it as shellcode8kb

Who is "we" in this context? Is there a community of anti-cheat reverse engineers out there?

thenewnewguy··on How to Exit Vim
ZZ exits vi(m) though?
thenewnewguy··on Security vulnerabilities fixed in Firefox 72.0.1 and ESR 68.4.1
I'm not even sure if the linux version of FF has an auto-updater. And even if it does every distro I've ever used (Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, and currently Arch Linux) must disable it, because I've never had FF try to auto update on linux.
thenewnewguy··on Security vulnerabilities fixed in Firefox 72.0.1 and ESR 68.4.1
There's a flag mentioned in that issue you can pass to the installer to disable that behavior.

Also, are there seriously people running FF with updates disabled? I personally see almost no scenario under which I'd ever not want to update.

thenewnewguy··on Evaluating State and Local Business Tax Incentives [pdf]
The title seems to be intentionally misleading, the words "no evidence" are presented as if they are a quote from the paper, while in reality the phrase "no evidence" appears zero times in it.

Ignore the headline, read the abstract and if you have time the paper. It's much more interesting and accurately/fairly describes the data collected.

thenewnewguy··on The first chosen-prefix collision for SHA-1
You'd probably be most successful modifying the original repo - either by being the creator of the software or gaining their trust. However, it would have to be a rather powerful SHA1 attack for the commit to still be valid syntax, hard to detect, and make a meaningful malicious change.
thenewnewguy··on Is Git Irreplaceable? (2019)
Merge conflicts are a part of any VCS that allows two people to edit the same file at the same time.
thenewnewguy··on Is Git Irreplaceable? (2019)
I find it ironic that in the same post the author complains about a git monopoly ("Git effectively has a global monopoly on DVCSes") while wishing the same thing for fossil ("Fossil's world domination will not come from...").
thenewnewguy··on A harassment campaign on Goodreads
Whoever answers the phone is likely not going to know or care about how the business advertises.

Like seriously, do you expect an employee to go "oh I don't know of any signs we advertise on, so I guess we can't buy your house"? Even if they know for a fact that the company doesn't have any sign-based advertising they're still not going to turn away the customer.

thenewnewguy··on Always Review Your Dependencies, AGPL Edition
I (and I'm sure many others) would gladly take an option to provide a whitelist of acceptable licenses.
thenewnewguy··on Chime – A Go Editor for macOS
When they say Chime is a Go editor they don't mean it is written _in_ Go (although it could be), but that it is written _for editing_ Go.
thenewnewguy··on No nuances, just buggy code (was: related to Spinlock implementation)
Paying to license what? I'm not aware of any other kernel suitable for mobile phone use you could buy with a license (i.e. iOS doesn't count as there's no way you're getting Apple to sell you even a license)
thenewnewguy··on JobFunnel, a job website search aggregator
I don't see why it would be, as long as you're just sending one real job application. If you tried to DOS a company by sending in a ton of garbage applications that'd probably be illegal.

That said I wouldn't be surprised if you get declined if the company realizes you did so.
