thendrill··on Tell HN: Salary data is for sale
In Norway tax return and salary is a public information available to everyone, handled by the government.
thendrill··on Bosch gives go-ahead for volume production of silicon carbide chips
I bet you live in Southern Norway.

Good luck driving electric in the North.

Also. Electric cars are slow.... Good luck holding 120 kph with an electric and not watch the battery melt.

thendrill··on Indian tech companies made big WFH promises. Now they’re calling workers back
Not only Indian I would say... Basically all big IT companies flaunted of how flexible they are. All the managers wanted a tap on the back.

Now all of a sudden all these managers discover that if they don't micromanage they have to work..... Now suddenly small talk in the office is very valuable...

Moral of the story: IT will lie about everything all the time...

Can someone please explain why should a middle class, middle aged blue collar worker care about this? How does any of this make his life better or worse?
thendrill··on We’re all paying for someone else’s 4-hour work week, not ours
Yes. Everything you said is exactly on point.

I was just trying to make a very simplified example that automation is never done to save human labour.

thendrill··on We’re all paying for someone else’s 4-hour work week, not ours
No no. What I meant was that, the automation usually costs around 15x-20x annual salaries of the workers, one time cost maintenance comes after . So unless you get MORE THAN 20x - 30x yield per year, no one is gonna care about automating the process.
thendrill··on We’re all paying for someone else’s 4-hour work week, not ours
"I usually just choose to not pay artists for music, software developers for games and software libraries, made some millions from an mobile game, using some suckers open source libraries and free assets. Also movies, I chose not to pay for those, you can get em free anyway.

Also I get to keep more cash if I just don't pay licensing fees.

I just found out that I don't have to pay taxes since I am making so much money not paying for all the other stuff, I just call it non profit.

I mean it is not hard. Made my first million before I was 20 with only 80k initial funding from my dads emerald mine."

thendrill··on We’re all paying for someone else’s 4-hour work week, not ours
Jobs are automated only and only if:

If it increases yield by magnitudes while also improving quality by magnitudes.

Example from the Pickle factory:

You have 4 people putting and screwing lids on pickle jars. 4 people. 2000 Lids a day. With around 40 faulty lids. Lets say you pay those 4 20k a year: total 80k.

An automation solution would cost you at least 400-500k. So unless this automation can do 20 000 lids a day and with only 10 faulty lids per day. Then Maybe it will be worth it. But most of the time it would not be automated.

thendrill··on Modeling Bitcoin Value with Scarcity (2019)
That is all true except:

Humanity has spent centuries trying to prove that alchemy ( turning metal to gold) is not possible.

We still have no idea what primes are. Unless the millennium problems og ( p vs np and prime factorization) have not been proven. Bitcoin will be stifled in its development

thendrill··on College as a Marriage Market
Did the article mentions if there are difference when it comes to college preference. Would the chase of finding a mate at a finance program better than cold world studies for example?
thendrill··on Ask HN: How does one company gets 30 M from investors to create a game?
Depends.

If you have 0 network. Then you need to go to conventions and startup meetups and build a network

Some EU governments have startup grants that can help you on the way. But you can't apply as a one man show. Minimum 3

The presentation and demo is usually just an after formality.

People invest in people, and buy ideas

thendrill··on Ask HN: How does one company gets 30 M from investors to create a game?
I can tell you about a startup I worked in(EU)

So the CFO was the son of a guy that knew the guy that eventual became the angel investor.

So this angel investor invested 5 million, initially. Then he made us join his incubator with his other 6 startups. There he had other friends investing in these startups. So let's say 6 friends invest 30 million in 6 startups. And each startup gets 5x6 = 30 million.

Our total invst. capital reached 35 mill.

Here is my point: One the Christmas party we had, we were having the investors there and they got drunk.

So you would think that investing this kind of money is a risk? Not when they mentioned they they make over 100 million each year. That is every year.

So for them risking %5 of their annual income, is not really a risk. Actually make their money back already there and then, since less income taxes + more write off tax.

So instead of pay double tax because they have more money the actually pay 1/2 tax.

But wait... That is an entire company, valued for over 1bn usd. That can "potentialy" ( but yet not realistically, yet for now) be compeletley wiped out to 0 if someone managed to "guess" their cold wallet priv key....

Interesting......

Edit: my bad, binance has a single cold wallet (165k btc) , coinbase I think keeps their btc in 8k btc wallets each.

Still that is 500k mil for each key guess

thendrill··on Äike – First e-scooter developed and assembled in Europe
Ok...

But it is priced like it is made in Europe too...

Why would I pay 6 times the price for something I can get for a fraction of the cost?

thendrill··on Stuxnet sibling theory surges after Iran says nuke facility shut down
I can offer a different theory.

You have a bunch of overworked underpaid and under qualified engineers in charge of deploying a nuclear facility with a ton of political pressure, and some crazy ass deadline.

On day one, your systems compeletley fold... Because of reasons. Do you admit fault and face political regime consequences?

Or... Do you blame it on a "system fault caused by hackers"

thendrill··on Figma and Canva are taking on Adobe and winning
This exactly. I am not asking my employer to spend so much money on something I am not using for free in my free time.
thendrill··on An interview with the man who keeps uploading my feet to WikiFeet
So it is ok for bloggers, journalists, fan sites, meme sites, meme factories etc. To take someone's publicly posted pic and use it for amusement or personal gain?

But it is not ok for a group of collectors to organize collections on internet out of crops of publicy posted photos, for something completely legal?

thendrill··on An interview with the man who keeps uploading my feet to WikiFeet
Nahh nahh. You are absolutely right. I love it when the techno "elite" throws out their principles the moment something feels icky but has no set social norms only parallels that are to icky to think about in an objective way.

So you are absolutely correct. Hn is just reddit suddenly

thendrill··on An interview with the man who keeps uploading my feet to WikiFeet
The images were publicly posted. How much more of a consent do we need?

The images are not altered only cropped.

According to this logic when journalists crop a picture of celebrities they should ask for dress designer consent to not include the dress?

Some people like faces some people like feet. Why do we need consent for liking a certain part of picture?

thendrill··on An interview with the man who keeps uploading my feet to WikiFeet
I loved the article. More people should devote to their passions.
