themerone··on Asahi Linux lead developer Hector Martin resigns from Linux kernel
All of those inventions were invented at least a couple years before the Apollo program.
themerone··on Ask HN: What license a SaaS company should use when open-source their software?
You might want to look into the "commons clause". It is a non opensource addition to a license, but is relative simple.

You will not find an OSI license with the protections you want because it is a violation of open source principles.

themerone··on Zuckerberg approved training Llama on LibGen [pdf]
Artists having been imitating the works of others for thousands of years. Why is it so controversial to have an AI do the same?
themerone··on Ask HN: Recommendations for site to post technical blogs?
From a readers perspective, Medium has gone downhill and is now flooded with articles from authors who's culture values quantity over quality.
themerone··on GIMP 3.0 is on the way
GTK has become the Gnome toolkit , and the Gnome developers don't care about developers outside their umbrella.
themerone··on Compressor "firn" improves ZSTD by 13%
This works by text substitution, I imagine that you could get similar or better gains using zstd custom dictionaries.
themerone··on RGFW: Single-header C99 window abstraction library
What do you expect from an alternative?
themerone··on On Building Git for Lawyers
It was hard enough to get lawyers to migrate from Word Perfect to Word.
themerone··on Ask HN: Why doesn't APFS always clone files when copying?
The behavior of cp is standardized across multiple operating systems. It should do the same thing regardless of where it is run.
themerone··on Ask HN: Why doesn't APFS always clone files when copying?
That and implementation detail of the cp command, not an APFS feature.

If I had to guess why, it would be because there are many cases where cp could not create a clone, such as copying to a network file system.

themerone··on Should We Abandon the Leap Second?
What we should do is make International Atomic Time (TAI) the standard for computers and convert to UTC as needed.
themerone··on Show HN: X11 tool to share a screen area in any video meeting
X11 is the opposite of simple and hackable. What you are thinking of as "hackable" is actually the result of it having a ton of legacy features that enable users to do neat tricks.

Wayland breaks a lot of these tools because it is so much simpler than X.

themerone··on Ask HN: What is the safest programming language?
This is a really dumb question that will get you a lot of subjective answers.

Nothing protects you from logic bugs, but design by contract can help reduce undefined behavior.

themerone··on Ask HN: Datacenters in Space Before Alaska?
It's way harder to cooling things in space than on earth. You can't use convection to dump heat into a vacuum. Radiative cooling is much slower and harder to scale.
themerone··on CUNY paid Oracle $600M for its HR software (2013)
I work on bespoke ERP software, it's not an undertaking to be taken lightly, but you are missing a key point.

Every process that doesn't your software doesn't accommodate becomes a manual process. There is an employee in a sibling department, using other software, who's full time job doing the work of one of my applications in excel.

themerone··on SSO Tax
In my experience, features that depend on 3rd party integrations, require a lot more support.

For some of those services it might not be profitable with there cheapest plans.

There certainly is price gauging from some vendors, but it's not unreasonable to charge a premium.

themerone··on Google's new pipe syntax in SQL
My big wish for SQL is for single row inserts to have a {key: value} syntax.
themerone··on Ask HN: Running P2P home nodes against carrier policy?
Downstream rates are usually an order of magnitude faster than upstream.

I've heard of some municipal fiber networks the offer symmetric service, but that is not the norm, at least in the US.

You would have to check the terms of service of every ISP that might be part of the network.

themerone··on Ask HN: 19yr old child suffering from internet gaming disorder? Any suggestions?
At 19 I lacked the life skills to succeed at topped ranked EECS program. I eventually transferred to tiny school where I developed the skills I needed in a low pressure environment. I'm currently 16 years into a good career.

I wasn't dealing with addictions, but I had my own share of mental health struggles back then. It sounds like you need to seek help from professionals, rather than internet randos.

themerone··on Foobar2000
WinAmp 3 was bloated, slow, and unstable. It was bad enough that they threw out the code and released WinAmp 5 which was based on the code from WinAmp 2.
themerone··on Ask HN: Is there a legal way to emulate the MEGA65 in software?
It's open source, why wouldn't it be legal to emulate?
themerone··on It's not just us: Other animals change their social habits in old age
I've seen this change in cats who lose their fear of strangers and become more sociable in old age.
themerone··on Ask HN: How do scammers spoof real phone numbers?
The SS7 protocol that transmits caller id info was developed when there was only one phone company in the United States. There was zero consideration to security. Nobody needed to consider what happens if a bad actor is added to the SS7 network, because the only connections were between national phone networks.
themerone··on Busting the Myth of GPL
Thanks for filling me in a out that.
themerone··on Busting the Myth of GPL
EDIT - I was wrong
themerone··on Trump says foreigners who graduate from US colleges should get green cards
This would turn every financially struggling or greedy school into a degree mill.
themerone··on 72% of U.S. high school teachers say cellphone distraction is a major problem
I hear more complaints from teachers about funding, pay, and parents.
themerone··on 72% of U.S. high school teachers say cellphone distraction is a major problem
So 28% of high schools ban phones or is this a 10th dentist thing?
themerone··on F-35 Gen III Helmet Mounted Display System
Just one, are we peasants?
themerone··on MySQL engineer: is Oracle unintentionally killing off the open source database?
What's killing MySQL is no longer being the only choice for low cost and small scale applications.

For a long time MySQL was the only well supported database on most cheap shared hosting plans.

Now that shared hosting has been losing relavance to PaaS options, MySQL doesn't have much going for it.
