MySQL engineer: is Oracle unintentionally killing off the open source database?

What's killing MySQL is no longer being the only choice for low cost and small scale applications.

For a long time MySQL was the only well supported database on most cheap shared hosting plans.

Now that shared hosting has been losing relavance to PaaS options, MySQL doesn't have much going for it.
