What about Winter CMS?
theluketowers··on Building a Game Engine in PHP Inside Winter CMS – A Wild Journey
Most people wouldn't choose PHP for building a game engine, but Jack did! Here's his story of turning a CMS into a multiplayer game engine. Check out the code, try the demo, and see if this crazy idea actually works!
theluketowers··on Show HN: PHP API Bindings for Open Brewery DB
I'm curious, what made you decide to use final classes and private properties in your Client class? I'd recommend taking a look at https://ocramius.github.io/blog/when-to-declare-classes-fina... if you haven't seen it before.
theluketowers··on Ask HN: DigitalOcean Down?
Down for me, intermittent connection issues to the droplets and the dashboard. First time it's ever impacted any of my sites in the 7+ years of hosting with DO.
theluketowers··on WordPress testing official SQLite Support
You should check out Winter CMS, we're built on top of Laravel and themes are powered by Twig - no heavy PHP code allowed in themes. Instead, complex logic is handled by "Components" that are provided by plugins.

It's extremely powerful and developer friendly (no more "custom post types" for every record type under the sun), definitely my preferred way to build websites that WordPress would normally handle.

theluketowers··on Tesla Semi, a Deep Dive
While not perfect, they do meet real world needs in ways that are better than current ICE options. A fully electric truck isn't really a viable option in the market they're building for right now (heavy duty working trucks for logging, etc). Additionally, getting a working hybrid option out into the wild still benefits the eventual transition to fully EV trucks as it allows for testing and validating of the electrical systems required to make a functional workhorse that can deliver value to its owners / operators as well as pushes forward the viability & benefit of electric vehicles in the eyes of the public / industry.
theluketowers··on Tesla Semi, a Deep Dive
I've been fascinated watching the progress of Edison Motors (https://www.edisonmotors.ca/), who are making a diesel electric hybrid semi. Their logic and arguments make a lot of sense: the diesel engine gets to run at its peak RPM 100% of the time to charge the batteries - and it gets to take advantage of the perks of electric like regenerative breaking, quieter operation, and immediate torque. Not to mention the easier transition time when it comes to working within existing infrastructure. There's also all sorts of side benefits with what they're doing like the semi itself being a generator on wheels for heavy duty equipment. Lots of fascinating stuff coming from them, and they already have a driving prototype :)
theluketowers··on How “let it fail” leads to simpler code
That's not without its drawbacks however, especially when you consider tools like swoole and laravel octane that keep your application in a long running process, so if you use die you actually kill one of the server workers instead of just terminating the execution of the request
theluketowers··on Universal access to free school meals end this summer
I'm curious to know what what "reasonably good" meals you're making for less than $3. That would cover pretty close to nothing in Canada. If such meals exist I'd be happy to learn more about them, feeding a family of four costs me around $1k a month.
theluketowers··on Windows XP Delta Edition
Not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for, but the closest modern equivalent might be the various VR games / apps that are centred around socializing with other random people (like VR Chat).
theluketowers··on Select, put and delete data from JSON, TOML, YAML, XML and CSV files
Not a generic tool as such, but Winter CMS has a INI parser / renderer built into the core: https://wintercms.com/docs/services/parser#ini-parser
theluketowers··on Creating a bash completion script (2018)
Symfony 5.4 just added support for bash completion to PHP CLI commands using the library so we were able to add a very nice and easy to use interface to Winter CMS to take advantage of it: https://wintercms.com/blog/post/console-improvements-winter-...

Defining completion values for a given argument in a Winter CMS CLI command is as easy as adding a single method to the command's class now:

    public function suggestMyArgumentValues(string $currentValue, array $allInput): array
    {
        return ['array', 'of', 'suggested', 'values'];
    }
theluketowers··on Mozilla Hubs
I've seen this be used for providing a space to explore 3D scans of an abandoned mining town in California: https://poly.cam/cerro-gordo. I think there's definitely some cool applications along those lines of providing a way to interact with real physical locations virtually with other people at the same time.
theluketowers··on Cannot Download GitHub Assets
Sigh, so much for a last minute deploy before recording a progress demo... Darn modern conveniences...
theluketowers··on Pilot Says Too Many Jumpers Outside Led to King Air Spin
Might depend on where you get your training from but I know for my private pilot's license I was instructed and practiced how to purposely get into spins and recover from them. It's a requirement in Canada: https://tc.canada.ca/en/aviation/publications/stall-spin-awa...
theluketowers··on Monitoring my home's air quality with AirGradient's DIY sensor
Saskatchewan Canada can easily reach -40°C for several weeks during the winter.

theluketowers··on October CMS as you know it is dead
October 2.0 was based off of the code base as of a year ago, so everything that was added to the project in the past year was removed in 2.0. As far as breaking changes in the 1.0 & 1.1 branches go the links are mostly talking about the docs changes that indicated the removal of the recent changes; but there are some that actually cause problems for current projects that aren't upgrading, such as the removal of the wikimedia-merge-plugin which is required for plugins to load their dependencies smoothly.
theluketowers··on October CMS as you know it is dead
Hey Tony! Not sure who vanilla-almond is, but I'm the Luke Towers that wrote the post and leads the Winter CMS project :)

Definitely should grab a bite again, although unfortunately that restaurant has closed :( Hit me up on the HackRegina Slack some time!

theluketowers··on No More Free Work from Marak: Pay Me or Fork This
That's because their product sucked, they charged excessive fees, and they were actively hostile to their users.
theluketowers··on The Children of the Opera
Personally I'm not all that into the opera, but this article does raise an interesting point about the affect that the pandemic has on the future viability of a lot of different organizations. Not just businesses, both small and large, but volunteer organizations, sports, and various outlets of skills that usually require in person participation and engagement; especially with youth to keep going strong.

This is a challenge the Air Cadet Flying Program in Canada is currently facing, it's always an ongoing effort to continually get more youth involved with flying and have them stick around with the organization to become the next generation of instructors and program leaders. With the pandemic not only are near term problems being encountered (such as the entire force of flying members no longer being current, requiring a "cold start" whenever the flying operations start back up), but there are also longer-term challenges in that a large gap could appear if the constant ongoing process of drawing new interest in aviation and the flying program specifically is on pause for too long.

theluketowers··on PHP 8: Before and After
Have you tried October CMS? It really gets back to the basics and is awesome for rapid application development. Disclaimer, I'm the lead maintainer
theluketowers··on Show HN: SheetUI – Turn Google Sheets into Web Pages
Note that Liquid is quite similar to Twig, which is used in quite a bit more projects than just Shopify.
theluketowers··on Ask HN: Shopify self hosted e-commerce alternative?
Check out Shopaholic for October CMS: https://octobercms.com/plugin/lovata-shopaholic (Disclaimer: I'm the lead maintainer for October CMS but I have no affiliation with Shopaholic).
theluketowers··on Ask HN: Fastest/easiest framework to build a web application in 2020?
I'd recommend taking a look at October CMS (https://octobercms.com/). It looks pretty simple from the intro video but if you take a bit of time getting to know it better you'll be blown away at how quickly and easily you can get something up and running that remains flexible & scalable enough to grow pretty big.

Disclaimer, biased as I am the lead maintainer for the project ;)

theluketowers··on CloudFlare Proxies Down?
Just had to go through all my sites in CloudFlare and disable the proxying feature so that my sites could get back online, seems to be an issue with the proxy servers as it's returning a 500 error page from cloudflare/nginx with none of CloudFlare's usual branding.
theluketowers··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking Freelancer? (August 2019)

theluketowers··on Cloudflare Registrar
Until they support .ca I can't use them at all.
theluketowers··on Detailed Comparison Between WordPress and OctoberCMS
I'm completely biased obviously, but I feel like this article's author has a lot of experience building WordPress sites but hasn't had the experience of building a site in OctoberCMS yet.

OctoberCMS is an incredibly powerful yet simple tool that can handle all manner of websites. I've built everything from your basic web brochure type sites to complicated web applications that are used for a wide variety of functionality to multi-tenant SaaS type offerings.

I recommend just trying it out for yourself and playing around with it. See https://drive.google.com/open?id=1KRj0LAnbC-Fgl392-Hz0MnJgih... if you would like a developer's introduction to the platform.

theluketowers··on Gource – a software version control visualization tool
Gource is incredibly powerful, but it does take a bit of playing around with all of the config options available to get your results just right.

I put together https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTYJAWWZ2jQ for OctoberCMS, an open source content management framework that's been steadily gaining in popularity for the past four years.
