Yeah it has been 10 years for me too. But yesterday I downloaded the RC to have my ChatGPT Agent run through my catalog and normalize everything.

Time to pull up Bandcamp and Soulseek and keep adding to my collection.

thekid314··on Nine PBS sues Iron Mountain over blocked access to archival data
Yeah, we are talking about 3 20TB drives in a closet here.

I'm an independent photographer and I have my 20TB drives behind my monitor, backing up to backblaze with an offsite synology. Keeping this archive up does take time and money, but PBS should have the budget and IT deparment for this.

thekid314··on Elevated Errors in Claude.ai
Yeah, the influx of people is disrupting my work, but it brings me joy to witness OpenAI’s decline in consumer support. So much for their Jonny Ive product, whatever it was.

thekid314··on Berkshire Hathaway Announces Leadership Appointments [pdf]
I’m curious to know which you believe is overvalued. Is it the model creators, who are essentially producing a commoditized product that will never generate the current inflated values? Or is it the individuals who build useful tools that are only incrementally better than previous solutions? Or is it the companies that are attempting to develop groundbreaking products, but they are perpetually six months to two years away from delivery?

I met Stallman once when he was pamphleting outside a beloved book store because they were using meetup to organize a book signing. The guy is consistent.
thekid314··on Cloudflare Global Network experiencing issues
This NYTimes article makes it sound like the problem is fixed, but I'm not seeing any improvement yet.

thekid314··on Twake Drive – An open-source alternative to Google Drive
The Synology Drive version mirrors the filesystem, though I’m sure it has a database for sharing metadata. Is that what they mean?
thekid314··on DeepSeek OCR
Yeah, and fails quickly at anything handwritten.
thekid314··on Oavif: Faster target quality image compression
Thanks for posting this, really interesting!

I've been building a wordpress plugin that converts JPEG to AVIF on the local server (since everyone wants to sell a service to convert in the cloud).

As a photographer who wants high quality photos on their portfolio website I love how AVIF respects color more the webp.

thekid314··on Line scan camera image processing for train photography
I love this! I tried to apply the same idea to scan the tallest tree in New England with a drone. It didn't come out great, but I might just try again now.

Here is how it came out: https://www.daviddegner.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Tree-...

thekid314··on Bitchat – A decentralized messaging app that works over Bluetooth mesh networks
Yeah, I used an older version of a bluetooth messaging app like this. We wish it had been available in the times of Tahrir Square, but it was actually helpfull onetime when my bus stopped at a rural Ethiopian bus stop, my girlfriend ran into the bathroom but was taking too long and I was able to warn her that the bus was getting ready to leave.

Wireless internet is getting better, but when you really need something like this, you really need it.

thekid314··on Building a Mac app with Claude code
Yeah, I've built a small iOS app and wordpress plugin for myself and love them. I'm curious if more people will do this in the near future, should we all be sharing our code on github?

thekid314··on Canvas
Yeah, I think this is a shift that will be very interesting when commercialized. I already use chatGPT to write odd plugins for wordpress and programs for image and text manipulation. Now I can get an applet to do almost anything simple after an hour of messing around.
thekid314··on Incident: Wordpress.org has blocked WP Engine customers from registry
Yeah, I'm afraid if WordPress.org doesn't have control over their own API's then they are compromised and reduces trust in them.
thekid314··on WordPress.org bans WP Engine
He’s also using the foundations copyright to target the primary competitor to his for-profit business, demanding that they invest in the profits of the for-profit company, at the expense of the WordPress open-source community. None of this looks altruistic or for the good of wordpress.org.

thekid314··on Egypt's pyramids may have been built on a long-lost branch of the Nile
Yeah, I photographed this story for the Smithsonian. It was talking about how the stones were transferred by boat from near Tora to Saqqara.

The water came most of the way up to the now seasonal lake near the pyramids there.

But also the river used to flood so there were some seasons when the water was high enough to easily transport the stone directly from Tora I assume.

thekid314··on Baltimore's Key Bridge struck by cargo ship, collapses
Was there a harbor pilot on board, or the normal ship pilot?

Were there tug boats helping with the exit?

I have often felt that the harbor protocols were overkill, but this is one of the times they could have helped.
