thehours··on Should the stock market never close?
IIRC this topic was mentioned in the Game Theory chapter of ‘Algorithms to Live By’ as an example of Mechanism Design, but I don’t have it handy to offer anything more than a bread crumb reference from memory.
thehours··on SQL for data scientists in 100 queries
> full outer join (also called cross join) constructs their cross product

Full outer joins and cross joins are different types of joins. A cross join returns the Cartesian product of both tables, while a full outer join is like a combination of a left and right join.

thehours··on Missile Game
> This game is one of the tests for the pilot to demonstrate the Eye-hand coordination. As a pilot, you are controlling a missile / flighter aircraft to pass through the obstacles as much as you can. Generally a qualified pilot can survive in level 9 up to 100 obstacles.

Doesn't answer *why* it starts at level 9, but level 9 appears to have some significance.

thehours··on New GitHub Copilot research finds 'downward pressure on code quality'
My experience is similar. This week I created a few DBT models and Co-Pilot saved a *ton* of keystrokes on the YML portion.

It needed some hand-holding in the early parts, but it was so satisfying to tab autocomplete entire blocks of descriptions and tests once it picked up context with my preferences.

thehours··on Earthquake in Japan yesterday may have shifted land 1.3 meters
Actually the lesson I take away is the importance of not having a 0% (or 100%) prior, since it leaves no room to update with new information.
thehours··on Things we learned analyzing 515M Wordles
3Blue1Brown later issued a correction video (due to a minor bug in the initial code) that showed it should have been SALET [1].

thehours··on Don't use DISTINCT as a "join-fixer"
> There was another interesting use case I wrote about a few years ago that showed how changing DISTINCT to GROUP BY – even though it carries the same semantics and produces the same results – can help SQL Server filter out duplicates earlier and have a serious impact on performance.

I recently learned this is also what Amazon recommends when querying Spectrum. [1]

thehours··on Ads team begging for worse search results so that ads team can hit their goals
I assumed he edited his email to move that statement earlier and forgot to delete that piece on the end before sending.
thehours··on Bug in macOS 14 Sonoma prevents our app from working
I don’t know if related, but immediately the last two MacOS upgrades I was unable to get my networking to work. I could connect to Wi-Fi / Ethernet / Hotspot. But nothing would actually connect (e.g. browser, pings, etc) , not even to my router.

The fix both times was to open the Mullvad VPN app just once and everything worked again. No idea why just opening the app would fix the issue.

thehours··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
> Available starting on September 18, iCloud+ will offer two new plans: 6TB for $29.99 (U.S.) per month and 12TB for $59.99 (U.S.) per month, providing additional storage to keep files, photos, videos, and more safe, accessible, and easy to share.

Interesting to see Apple finally bumping the upper limit on iCloud storage.

thehours··on Tell HN: iOS converts units for highlighted text
TIL you can swipe to scroll on the pop-up (in addition to tapping the “>”).
thehours··on I fixed a parasitic drain on my car in 408 days
My issue is related to a 12v charger as well, except a little different. Sometimes the car won’t start (engine doesn’t even turn) _until_ I unplug the 12v charger. Then it starts right away. No idea why, but would love an explanation from someone knowledgeable!
thehours··on Shields Up
Similar. 95% HN and text.npr.org. uBlock origin keeps things pretty quiet for any adventures outside those spaces (following links and other things people send me.)
thehours··on Introducing ChatGPT and Whisper APIs
There were a few outages that also locked me out (obviously) as a paying subscriber. Not sure how often I was able to access it even though the service was ‘at capacity’. Knowing something like that might make me feel better about the value of Premium.
thehours··on Jailbreak Chat: A collection of ChatGPT jailbreaks
I got this response when I tried the prompt in an existing chat, but I was able to get it to work as the first prompt in a new chat.
thehours··on Photos capture life inside a drop of seawater
I clicked expecting it was going to be about tiny cameras taking pictures from within droplets. Stunning photos nonetheless!
thehours··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
Also surprisingly comfortable to wear while laying on a pillow, at least compared to anything I've tried so far. White noise + noise cancellation makes for pleasant naps.
thehours··on There oughta be a Game Boy capture cartridge
> Switching them for an unfamiliar modern device or an emulator will significantly impede their ability to play competitively

Was this used in a tournament? How was it received by the competitors?

thehours··on Ask HN: Which books have made you a better thinker and problem solver?
The Scout Mindset: Helped reinforce the difference between being right and getting the right answer. Removing my ego from the equation has made it so much easier to admit being wrong.
thehours··on How thick is a three-sided coin?
FYI I'm getting FPS issues on Firefox after the simulation runs for 30-60 seconds, but this doesn't happen on Safari.

Coincidentally I recently had a similar issue on a personal project using HTML Canvas that resolved when I discovered I was inadvertently using `ctx.rect(...); ctx.fill(...);` instead of `ctx.fillRect(...)`.

Not familiar enough with Matter.js to know how relevant that might be!

thehours··on How to download all of Wikipedia onto a USB flash drive
Tangent - I’ve noticed a lot more comments like this using the “^0” syntax for citations vs the traditional “[0]” one I’ve become accustomed to seeing on HN. Is there a real shift happening here and, if so, why?
thehours··on Matplotlib 3.6
Python is my daily driver, but I briefly experimented with R and had a delightful experience with ggplot2. The ‘grammar of graphics’ was hard to leave behind when I switched back to Python, until I heard about Plotnine [1], which brings much of the same grammar and functionality to Python. It’s built on Matplotlib and a few other common libraries like Pandas.

thehours··on Crumb Circuit Simulator
Same. Does anyone have a MacOS alternative they would recommend?
thehours··on Meal Kit company sued by customers whose gallbladders were removed
Saucepans are somewhere in the middle.

"Saucepans are round, vertical-walled vessels used for simmering or boiling. Saucepans generally have one long handle. Larger pans of similar shape with two ear handles are sometimes called "sauce-pots" or "soup pots" (3–12 litres)." [1]

thehours··on Optimal coverage for Wordle with Monte Carlo methods – Part III
The words are unique in each list, so the validation is on the combined set.
thehours··on Susan Kare Explains Macintosh UI Ergonomics (1984) [video]
It's interesting that an early world processor like LisaWrite included a ruler and how little it has changed over the years. Was this standard among word processors of 1984?

Aside: what 'real life' application used rulers in this fashion before word processors started using it?

thehours··on The Itanic Has Sunk
I didn’t know much about this from the contractors’ perspective. This Atlantic article [1] seems like a decent overview for anyone else interested.

thehours··on iOS 14 tracking changes sees big ad spending drop, tumbling prices
Given how rampant ad fraud is in programmatic, I wonder how much revenue actually drops for these companies, relative to the decreased ad spend.

Uber’s [1] experience is one example:

“We turned off two thirds of our ad spend – $100m out of annual spend of $150m – and basically saw no change in our number of rider app installs. What we saw is a lot of installs we thought had come through paid channels suddenly came through organic.”
