thehoff··on Bored to Tears by a Do-Nothing Dream Job
I assume this means that there are no options with your current employer?

Don't want to assume but a number of years ago with my current employer I started out doing work that was seemed interesting but a year or so in it started to get old real fast (also lots of education). I too started to get somewhat depressed and felt like I was 'rotting'.

So I started doing some projects on the side that started to have some real impacts over the next year. This eventually started to get some attention (the good kind) which lead to other things which eventually led to what I do now which I really enjoy doing. I'm at my same employer, same boss but through letting her know what I wanted and my side-projects I was able to parlay that into something more interesting.

(I realize that this may not work for all employers.)

thehoff··on More Mexicans Leaving Than Coming to the U.S
I did read it. But maybe I'm misinterpreting.

The same pattern is present among all Latino origin groups, though for three—Ecuadorians, Mexicans and Nicaraguans—the number of immigrants has declined since 2010 (for details, see Appendix Table A2).

The foreign-born share of Salvadorans, for example, fell from 76% in 2000 to 59% in 2013—the largest percentage point decline of any of the six largest Hispanic origin groups. Similarly, Dominicans, Guatemalans, and Colombians all had decreases of over 13 percentage points in their foreign-born shares over the same period. Mexicans, the nation’s largest Hispanic origin group, also saw a decline, though it was only 8 percentage points since 2000.

thehoff··on More Mexicans Leaving Than Coming to the U.S
It looks like the replacement you're talking about is actually not true. The numbers that are immigrating is declining across the board.

thehoff··on More Mexicans Leaving Than Coming to the U.S
About half way through this one you can get a small glimpse into what the public generally thinks.

thehoff··on More Mexicans Leaving Than Coming to the U.S
I haven't read this one yet but it looks like it may be declining across the board, at least the flow to the US.

Reminded me of this story I read a while back:

thehoff··on Teaching a 3-Year-Old to Program Without a Computer Screen
Hrrm, I misread. Looks like the $ doesn't go as far as I thought (for $180 you get the playset, not the world kit). Interesting concept but on second pass this is a little steep.
thehoff··on Teaching a 3-Year-Old to Program Without a Computer Screen
http://www.primotoys.com/ looks like the direct site.

I thought $180 seemed like a lot but it does look like you get a lot of stuff (including a simple robot).

A toy lawn mower, a wooden toy train set, a toy truck, and maybe another one or two toys is already pushing $100, most of which end up in a bin to be barely played with after the first day.

thehoff··on 1,000-year-old onion and garlic eye remedy kills MRSA
Radiolab did a show on this recently and it was interesting to say the least.

Podcast here: http://www.radiolab.org/story/best-medicine/

thehoff··on Show HN: Data Is Plural – A weekly newsletter of useful/curious datasets
Great idea! Subscribed. Have you posted to Datatau? I'll bet there's some folks over there that would be interested as well.
thehoff··on 9/11 with oculus rift
I vaguely remember a show/movie where people were traveling back in time to be at major events/tragedies similar to this.

In any case interesting and (to me) a little creepy at the same time. I'm sure (at least for me) with time the creepiness will wear off. Definitely an interesting take on this tech.

thehoff··on How to detect lies with a storytelling technique
Slightly off topic, decided to check out the source (Criminal podcast) and seems like a great one (based on the first two episodes). Subscribed.
thehoff··on Show HN: Tabli – A Tab Manager for Google Chrome
I really like this after playing with it for a short bit here.

Question though, the "Other Windows", that's on my current machine right? Can I not see windows open on another machine like in the History tab?

thehoff··on Female violinist exposes 10 years of lewd, fetishizing messages from men online
Have you read any of the messages she got? Hard to see how many of those were taken out of context.

I guess getting 3 of those messages a day that she got (over 10 years) is acceptable? What's the cutoff for being acceptable here so I know when I should take her seriously.

What about the ones that seem like threats? What about the ones from the person that was arrested for stalking another woman? When do those count?

thehoff··on Ken Taylor, Legendary Canadian Diplomat, Dies at 81
Ignorant me was glad to read that part. I saw Argo and with my very limited knowledge of what happened assumed that what I saw was pretty much what happened. Glad to read that and am now curious to learn more.
thehoff··on Ask HN: The best app to keep a work diary
Same idea but I use Sublime Text. You can add the same feature to ST by creating a new plugin.

Stack Overflow answer (not mine) for how to do this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11879481/can-i-add-date-t...

* Note it's not the accepted answer but the one with the most upvotes on the proper way.

thehoff··on Show HN: Space Invaders built with React
Another one who gave up after 3 tries of keyboard/mouse didn't work.
thehoff··on How Bad Will It Get for American Express?
While I don't entirely agree, this article put me off a little.

The first three paragraphs didn't make sense to me and seemed like you said, anecdotal/rumor.

Same with the part about Chenault at the Museum of Natural History event with Sheryl Sandberg and how "yet his dark slacks were creased, and his shoes gleamed as if they'd just been polished." Reads as if the author has something personal in this. What was he supposed to show up in?

thehoff··on Secret surveillance of ‘suspicious’ blacks in one of DC's poshest neighborhoods
Oh I didn't mean that it isn't. It's a great city but I've been caught off balance with the sometimes blatant racism.
thehoff··on Secret surveillance of ‘suspicious’ blacks in one of DC's poshest neighborhoods
I always thought of DC as such a multi-racial/ethnic town and that it would be much more welcoming-to-all than it is.
thehoff··on LogMeIn acquires Lastpass
Am I blind? Where is the pricing for Enpass? It says free download free updates but then in middle it says pay once use forever.
thehoff··on 81-year-old man driven to death by phone scammers
Where I work we have gotten emails claiming to be from IT, after constant reminders on what an official email would look like and how to spot a fake and to never click on links. Apparently some have fallen for it.

While not lottery scams you would think that in a work environment where there is constant education on what to look out for it still happens.

I wouldn't attribute it to stupidity. Just getting caught at the right moment.

thehoff··on Johnson and Johnson, America’s Most Admired Lawbreaker
Okay that makes sense but can't one argue that when I see Michael Jordan endorsing a product I can assume that most people know that he is being paid for it. Not to mention my health isn't on the line for the product he is endorsing.

When I get a prescription from a doctor I have no idea whether or not he is getting something out of it. Whether it be speaking fees, a new pen, lunches, or whatever. Legal or not. I just trust that that doc is acting in my best interest.

And thank you for the work on the Dollars for Docs project. I for one am appreciative of this find.

thehoff··on Johnson and Johnson, America’s Most Admired Lawbreaker
Reading around looks like it was homegrown, headed up by two people from the New Republic.

From their about page:

"It's a new digital home for an old journalistic tradition. Think of it as a magazine that only runs cover stories—big, ambitious pieces intended to change the way you see the world or influence the course of policy. Investigations will take months, essays will be finely considered, the subjects we choose to write about will feel urgent and essential."

thehoff··on Johnson and Johnson, America’s Most Admired Lawbreaker
Following through the links to Dollars for Docs:

https://projects.propublica.org/d4d-archive/companies/johnso...

How is this legal? I'm ignorant of the details but for instance, if you click on California and look at Speaking, top of the list doc got $86,550!

thehoff··on Johnson and Johnson, America’s Most Admired Lawbreaker
Great read so far, read Chapter 1 not realizing there were 15! I love these long form reads where it seems like the author actually did an investigation and is taking care to report.

On topic (again only got through chapter 1) I hope that J&J, or better yet those actual PEOPLE, that were involved get punished. And not the that's the cost of doing business punished. I doubt it but one can hope.

thehoff··on How Two Guys Lost God and Found $40M
From the article:

At Second Source, the best customers were the most desperate. Often they were immigrants with poor English. Brokers bragged about their biggest rip-offs. For motivation, Hurwitz would tape $100 bills to the wall. Salesmen who weren’t cutting it would have their chairs taken away. “Why are you sitting on my chair,” Hurwitz would yell, “if you’re not making me any money?”

I'm sure those businesses were not physically forced to sign but I'd wager those phone calls were not entirely forthcoming on details as well.

thehoff··on How Two Guys Lost God and Found $40M
Judging them on how they are quoted and this article makes them appear doesn't surprise me at all. I'm sure they want others to see how they've made it.
thehoff··on How Two Guys Lost God and Found $40M
All empathy right out the door. No second thought for the lives they were ruining for their own self.
thehoff··on New evidence suggests we can learn while we sleep, but do we really want to?
But is this not the way things are almost now?

Kids of all stripes are forced to study once they get home until they go to bed. Go to bed, wake up and go to school (you better get straight A's) then go home and study. Adding in more time for studying? We'd have numerous studies on the pros and cons of this method.

I'm sure one could point to a time period in our past where people would think that the way we live now is 'dystopia'.

There could also be novel ways to use this time.

For instance, it would be kind of cool to study while sleeping, maybe some math or science or art or history. Then during the waking hours, instead of studying more, I'd love to do something with that knowledge, stuff that you can't do while you are asleep. Like experiments, make a software program that does something, draw some art that mimics a particular period. Utilize that knowledge and expand on it but in a more hands on fun way.

My $0.01.
