Chris here, blog.freshteapot.net is where I post tech related activity. It is based on my journey using the web everyday in the capacity of a consultant / worker and a creator of bootstrapped web company.

If you want to get in contact, feel free chris@freshteapot.net.

My first iOS Application:

Wordpoke - "add, forget, remind, remember".

Its a tool to help you learn something new, aimed at "words" and "phrases" for the moment.

thefreshteapot··on Google offers researchers 1 billion computing core-hours
I was looking at the facebook github page for hiphop php and I only just made the connection that the compiled php projects could potentially be ran via "nativeclient".

Equally, its interesting to read that you can register a nativeclient as a plugin for Chrome to be used in their speech api. Not for speech per say, it demonstrates that the connection and the code exists to make it easier to hook into other aspects.

"Extensions are free to use any available web technology to provide speech, including streaming audio from a server, HTML5 audio, Native Client"

thefreshteapot··on Ask HN: It's 2011 Sphinx or Solr?
Having now been exposed to both...

If you ever want to use it as a caching system ... solr is the way to go.

I personally think very highly of Sphinx, yet be aware that Sphinx will return ids not "content".

When handlesocket was announced [1], for me the gem other than the obvious was this nugget of information.

"No duplicate cache When you use memcached to cache MySQL/InnoDB records, records are cached in both memcached and InnoDB buffer pool. They are duplicate so less efficient (Memory is still expensive!). Since HandlerSocket plugin accesses to InnoDB storage engine, records are cached inside InnoDB buffer pool, which can be reused by other SQL statements."

Knowing that with the latest version of sphinx your can make use of their Query format via code or via the mysql console... it has me more sold on Sphinx than solr.

We use solr where I work, it is nice to use and coming features will make it better...

The most annoying aspect of solr for me is, you cant index elsewhere and easily merge it...

Either are miles better than fulltext search.

Perhaps list a few of your needs and requirements then we might be able to see if one stands out ahead of the other.

thefreshteapot··on Zapd: ‘We built it, they came, but Facebook pulled up the drawbridge’
side stepping the snarky comment debate sadly raging on. I too am unimpressed about sites or apps posting to my stream (thankfully this has evolved with time), yet I have a question...

what level of "detail/information/explanation" would you need to feel comfortable using a product which has functionality you can activate to use with your stream or not activate and it wouldn't hinder your personal use of the site.

thefreshteapot··on Tempo: a tiny JSON rendering engine
As a user of the "prototype.js" library this is a little similar to the default template syntax, yet with one extra character.

Thomas Fuchs has a very similar version: http://mir.aculo.us/2011/03/09/little-helpers-a-tweet-sized-...

And finally, I ported the template functionality from the "prototype.js" to php. https://github.com/freshteapot/php-template

"If we fund you, the goal will be to build a compelling prototype or demo to raise money from appropriate investors"

- Perhaps i'm a bitter competitor* yet shouldn't this read.

"If we fund you, the goal will be to build a compelling prototype or demo to raise the standard of education for all, inspiring a thirst for learning"

I'm skeptical to private groups with funds who want to invest in a lucrative market which is not purely based on "capitalistic ideals". To use a famous quote in context "Education is for life, not just for Christmas".

* One day! for those who know me and my snail like pace at getting to a version 1.

thefreshteapot··on Persistent Login Cookie Best Practice
I think one aspect of encrypted connections not being the norm is the issue of client caching.

My experience of trying to cache on the client side, data ( from a php script ) requested via GET over https doesnt happen. This is done by design of the browsers as I believe they see it as the better of two evils. ( Not wanting to store secure data and then being attacked for that and losing market share ).

The approach I am using ( which is far from ideal ) is to make use of javascript, which can be cached.

thefreshteapot··on Interesting visualisation on Google earth
It is a very pretty way of seeing stats.

I especially like how he has tackled (to a point the ) splitting up of countries into a grid, to allow him to block the stats into something a little more meaningful than many thin lines.

The blog post about it: http://enda.squarespace.com/tech/2011/3/6/nokia-place-regist...

thefreshteapot··on Facebook bans Adsense in all applications, driving Google out of Facebook.com
With the google app store coming into effect with html5 games(and apps), those game creators on fb maybe lured or tempted into trying their games in a new segment. I for one use facebook less and less. Purely as a place to go when I want to communicate with a friend who likes fbmail over email.

thefreshteapot··on The silent icelandic revolution the media don't tell you about
* it has taken a long time to get to this stage.

* the first version "the people" rejected, imagine that in UK.

* they ultimately have to pay (not by choice)

* notice how they plan on forcing the banks to pay for it (yes most owned by the government) not by taxing their people who have already suffered.

thefreshteapot··on Python client for Etsy's statsd (node proxy for Graphite)
Yes, I did see it there.

Reasons why I added it.

Some people ( I ) like to read the comments first, if I see links, if I like the domain of or I deduce it is meaningful to me, in this case "etsy". Then it increases my likely hood of reading more.

If in a few days I think, "aahh what was the name of that stat thing written in node". Knowing I found it here plus a little google magic. Im there. "site:news.ycombinator.com node etsy"

Having upvoted your link ( in my saved stories ) the comments here begin to act as a form of "bullet point notes".

Most of the reasons above are to make it easier for me to find your article at a later date.

As I write this, I realise, a nice little application would be one which follows the popular links here into the article in question and "intelligently" pull out interesting links and associates them with this post.

Throw in the ability to personalise the data using your own white lists of domains, keywords to look for and it would be pretty sweet.

thefreshteapot··on Python client for Etsy's statsd (node proxy for Graphite)
For those like me who didnt have a clue what "statsd".

Here is the link to it:

thefreshteapot··on Khan Academy and BitTorrent Partner to Distribute Educational Videos
If you listen to this interview by Techzing with th creators of a "web tv show" Pioneer One, they talk about how releasing it on Bittorrent has given them access to many new people and new lead gen.

(Also I note they mention in it in the blurb) http://techzinglive.com/page/643/102-tz-interview-pioneer-on...

Assuming Khan do a "nice bit of self branding" at the start or end of the video with the link, then I can only see this being a plus, it also keeps the videos more in the public domain, instead on youtube, for instance... I believe ultimately it will bring them more exposure.

thefreshteapot··on Overclocking SSL
Interesting article, lead me on a bit of a side tangent to my usual monday morning.

Based on people saying that 1024 bit RSA is no longer considered secure. I hunted down what I believe is at least one source from nist.gov.

http://www.nist.gov/manuscript-publication-search.cfm?pub_id...

With the default having to be increased in less than a few months, I was a little surprised to see that google, having recently trumpeted about their "encrypted" search is using 1024bits.

https://encrypted.google.com/

If you check their certificates you will see it is 1024bit.

I was hoping to compare it to https://duckduckgo.com, yet it turns out they too are running 1024bits.

I hasten to add, I dont really understand the significance of different ciphers used etc, this is purely based on bits.

thefreshteapot··on Idea to ($0.07) profit in 7 hours
I will have to agree to disagree on the value.

Your argument is valid, I just dont subscribe to it myself.

As noted thru all my comments, even tho we disagree on its value, it has great "knowledge" value to you and your professional capacity.

thefreshteapot··on Idea to ($0.07) profit in 7 hours
"Horrid" purely because in its current state it offers no value, nor is it an impressive feat of technology. ( I dont believe )

Bottom line, you executed from idea to product, horrid or not. That IS great. The knowledge of knowing how to go from idea to paid service is very valuable.

I dont know if it is poorly made. Tiny is not a bad thing nor is a lack of scope.

thefreshteapot··on Idea to ($0.07) profit in 7 hours
Full credit to you for producing a concept to live, money generating site.

Equally like your tactics via twitter, and buying the domain ( I might borrow that! ) to gain members.

BUT... This is a horrible example of what budding internet entrepreneurs should be aiming for. Truly horrid.

thefreshteapot··on Why Mongrel2 Doesn't Use INI Files (Zed Shaw)
For a simple site, this maybe overkill.

Yet running a development setup on a VM and having live setups. ( A little bit like that the deviant guys wrote about

http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1769637 )

I can see sqlite data being very handy.

You could give each their own respective id and then just pull out all the records for them.

thefreshteapot··on Apps for development | Competition by the World Bank
First prize being $15,000 US DOLLARS, to me seems very low for creating an "app to help developing countries".

Is this competition more a gimmick than a desire?

thefreshteapot··on Faster Web Development With Virtual Machines at deviantART
Im confused, this post of yours seems a tad contradictory to your post about "setting up environments in RoR etc".
thefreshteapot··on Faster Web Development With Virtual Machines at deviantART
Your last sentence is an example of when I would like to vote "my displeasure" with a down arrow.

As others have mentioned, you make a bold claim, yet fail to give anything concrete as proof that it is "much easier".

thefreshteapot··on Bricks out of wool
What I find most interesting about this is the combination of two materials which have a rich history. When I was visiting Tasmania ( below Australia ) they talked about the locals from there used to make items out of dried seaweed and how versatile it was. To think a combination of seaweed goo mixed with wool, to make bricks... Its like fiber glass but different.
thefreshteapot··on Where to submit your startup for some coverage
As an owner of a site wanting to get my name and info out there, this part of the ToS doesnt read to bad.

I certainly understand where your displeasure comes from, yet I do feel it needs to be kept in perspective. As in this would not be acceptable on your personal email. But on your generic site email. ( Which should still have a touch of personal, of course for your users! )

As mentioned in many places, if you are using email via google, you could always "+killerstartups" in your email.

I just tested it myself and it worked great. Not with "+killerstartups" just "+test".

thefreshteapot··on The Nomadic Coder - Derek Sivers IS Caine From Kung Fu [audio]
Relaxed easy listening interview. I dont think anything to revealing. Perhaps that he is moving to Singapore at the end of the year. If your a fan of his usual posts which make it on here, you will most likely find some enjoyment out of this.
thefreshteapot··on Ask HN: How can I be more effective?
Further to this point. I went over to the link and found my way to an iphone app ( free ) to read free books including titles from the gutenberg.

http://www.lexcycle.com

I also want to add, you can set the reader to display as "terminal" which means im reading this book green text, black background.
