theferalrobot··on What is the business model for DuckDuckGo? (2017)
> I find it off-putting the way they speak of privacy but then use maps provided by a GAFAM which are ultimately profit oriented and can _not_ be trusted

DuckDuckGo itself is profit oriented, as is ProtonMail and a ton of other privacy first companies. Those aren’t mutually exclusive and I don’t think most people operate with that level of distrust.

I think the problem people have with Google is that their business model itself (targeted advertising) isn’t currently compatible with privacy.

theferalrobot··on A complete 4-year course plan for an AI undergraduate degree
I happen to have taken an ethics course but it wasn't at all part of my CS/AI education. It was just a humanities course in my undergrad that fulfilled some philosophy requirement. Did your CS program actually require ethics directly? If so that is rather interesting.
theferalrobot··on A complete 4-year course plan for an AI undergraduate degree
> No surprise that this doesn’t include any consideration for the profound moral, ethical, or social implications of AI and AI solutions.

Would you say the same thing for an undergrad in SE (actually asking)? I feel like the hype train for AI has moved it into a plane where it has to be some moral arbiter but it seems to me that the same demands could be placed on most fields of study including general software engineering.

> Nothing about bias in models. Nothing about communication. Nothing about privacy. Nothing about security. Nothing about resiliency. Nothing about the responsibility of the individual practitioner. Nothing about the economic or ecological impact of the work.

Maybe it is just my bubble but I feel like very few AI jobs actually deal with hot button ethics (facial recognition for dubious purposes etc). It is just that these fringes get all the attention as if they represent the broad community (they don’t). For instance I work in AI for satellite communications, most of the things you bring up don’t really apply (any more than they do to the software engineers I work with). My former work was in AI and computer vision in marine ecosystems. Again... your moral questions don’t really apply (privacy of coral reefs?). I agree it is important to be aware of these issues but most of the real jobs in AI I feel like are more scientific in nature.. not the privacy busting, bias inducing ones we hear about a lot. Again that could be my bubble to some degree I suppose though.

>For example, just weeks ago highly placed senators were discovered to have conducted insider trading on the back of security briefings on the coronavirus pandemic

What did they know that wasn't already in the public eye? Banks were making their projects just like everyone else and nobody KNEW what was going to happen. Insider trading has a real legal definition, there was nothing in that briefing that could constitute insider trading because there was no information revealed there, just speculation that was already captured by public sources.

theferalrobot··on The San Francisco Bay Area shelter-in-place order is being extended through May
At the end of the day it is going to be a judgement call by someone - hopefully informed by scientific fact - but ‘science’ doesn’t say when to reopen, just provides the data and context help make a decision.

No-one is assuming - we are weighing evidence and there is far more evidence that it does provide at least some immunity than none - it seems oddly disingenuous of WHO to make statements like this because they know how it will be interpreted.

> I’m not a Windows fan but at least it doesn’t feel like it’s regressing like the Mac experience has been

Maybe I am just crazy but I had to go back and use XP for a few days for a project I’m working on (long story). After being on it and going back to 10 I honestly miss it in a lot of ways.

The UX on Xp was so clear, I still know where all the settings are and how to use them. I felt so in control. Now on Windows there are like 10 different settings menus with completely different design languages. I can’t find anything without search (and search is a disaster in and of itself). I can’t control updates well and in the last year there have been multiple updates that borked machines.

theferalrobot··on More Than 5.2M More U.S. Workers Filed for Unemployment
1) doesn’t say most Americans and doesn’t even cite the full response (nor does it provide context for the question in the survey).

The actual statistic is that when asked if they could cover an unexpected 400$ bill - 40% of Americans in this survey responded that they would sell something to help pay it OR couldn’t pay it. We don’t know how many said they couldn’t and we don’t know why those who said they would sell something said that.

Secondly the survey itself admits that it had an, “oversample of individuals with a household income less than $40,000 per year”

https://www.federalreserve.gov/publications/files/2017-repor...

The same survey also found:

“74 percent of adults said they were either doing okay or living comfortably in 2017“

Even your source says a minority of Americans (even though it again, cherry picks from that study).

This is just not true despite the fact that a few media sources twisted a statement from the reserve board a while back.

Here is a fact that may help provide some context: The median net worth of a us household is $97,300.

theferalrobot··on California, Oregon and Washington announce western states pact
Right on the nose.

Even when reopening is clearly the right thing to do nobody will want to personally take the fall. It's the reason the US has a high incarceration rate, nobody wants to be the one to release a ton of people from jail even if it's the right thing to do.

theferalrobot··on Zoom iOS app sends data to Facebook even if you don’t have a Facebook account
I believe that is in fact the case. I removed all Facebook owned apps from my phone a few weeks ago and I stopped seeing reports show up there. Experimentally, it seems like an uninstall disassociates the ID from your facebook account.

That doesn’t mean facebook stopped getting those reports, only that they are no longer associating them with my account.

theferalrobot··on Germany and US wrestle over coronavirus vaccine
I don’t think you understand the term conspiracy theory nor do you understand how the burden of proof works.

I have already given many credible sources showing why your claim is false, the hacker news mods have removed these articles multiple times (including this very post). You have provided an unsubstantiated claim with no evidence. An extraordinary claim requires extraordinary evidence.

theferalrobot··on Germany and US wrestle over coronavirus vaccine
>The conspiracy theory is that the German government conspired to spread a lie.

Are you on the wrong post? I never said they were spreading lies?

The only thing the German government did was confirm they and the US government were both in negotiations with CoreVac. They did NOT state that the US was looking for exclusive rights.

None of this goes against my initial post that this is a completely unsubstantiated article.

Edit: You can't cite the news as your source for the news, especially when the news itself says it is unconfirmed.
