theferalrobot··on Ferret: A Multimodal Large Language Model
You could use that apologist language for any company. If they suck at something just say they are “biding their time” No. Apple is just demonstrably behind.

Having terrible predictive text, voice to text, image classification etc isn’t just a quark of the way they do business. Those are problems with years of established work put into them and they just flat out aren’t keeping up.

theferalrobot··on Beeper Mini removed from Google Play?
Has the beeper team made statements on this? I was just looking around and couldn’t find anything in my initial search at least
theferalrobot··on Beeper Mini removed from Google Play?
If this was removed by Google and not the beeper mini team I feel like this move is going to make it so much harder for Apple and Google in any future antitrust legislation.

Apple was already getting flak in the media for beeper mini, calling in Google to help makes it seem so much worse (even if it was done without a specific verbalized agreement). The obviousness of this makes me wonder if there is something else going on here (or maybe they really are that blatant now?)

>They just have to build a compelling consumer product that can only function with AI

Yeah and I'm not talking exclusively about developer trust. Given Apple's current consumer lineup (see Siri, Apple photos, predictive text etc)... we only have evidence that they suck at ML. What makes you think they are going to suddenly transform overnight?

theferalrobot··on Ferret: A Multimodal Large Language Model
There are so many modern ML components that have terrible or no support in CoreML. Try to do any convolution other than conv2d, advanced or custom activation functions etc and you are out of luck. Exporting from PyTorch leads to all sorts of headaches with subtle behavior changes between implementations it is definitely a pain point for developers of widely used software
theferalrobot··on Ferret: A Multimodal Large Language Model
Given Apple's track record on anything AI related and the terrible state they keep CoreML that not only seems extraordinarily unlikely, it would take a lot of time to win developer trust and that I just don't see happening.
theferalrobot··on AI can diagnose childhood autism from retinal photos
Am I reading this wrong? They only had validation sets with no final test set which makes the results kinda worthless because we don't know how overfit they were to these validation sets (which can easily happen with any sort of parameter tuning). There is a reason why a proper study needs three splits train/validation (and possible multiple of these if you use k-fold) and a final to be used as sparingly as possible 'test' set.

See the paper, "On estimating model accuracy with repeated cross-validation"

Even the sklearn docs for cross validation show this split: https://scikit-learn.org/stable/_images/grid_search_cross_va...

I didn’t mention a thing about ‘percieved slowness’ and it isn’t my opinion it is the entire market’s opinion, I’m a former FireFox user, don’t shoot the messenger: https://gs.statcounter.com/browser-market-share
theferalrobot··on Choose the browser that best suits your privacy needs
Certainly not but believing that FireFox is going to resurrect itself from a dropping market share of 3% is delusional and the sooner we all face reality the better we can make it. I loved FireFox over the years but he’s dead Jim.
theferalrobot··on Choose the browser that best suits your privacy needs
Blink is the de facto web standard like it or not just like linux is for web hosting and both are open source and contributed to by many companies. Firefox is now in 5th place for browser market share and Mozilla is a dumpster fire of a company, imo it is only a matter of time before Firefox switches or completely folds.
theferalrobot··on Video-LLaVA
Yes thank you. I can put xxx license on a math equation but everyone can ignore it because the equation isn’t subject to licensing regardless of who or when it was made. I believe the same is true for weights (at least in some places, tbd in others)
theferalrobot··on Video-LLaVA
I do not think it has been determined that weights are copyrightable
theferalrobot··on Video-LLaVA
It is my understanding that you can compare weights and with a high degree of confidence determine what the parent of a model is unless the fine tuning destroyed all the original information in which case there isn’t a huge reason to have fine tuned to begin with. There are other ways to scramble weights which make the comparisons a lot harder to do though which will matter if weights ever are considered copyrightable

> I apply for hundreds and get literally 0 calls back

You can’t meaningfully apply for hundreds of jobs. Apply to 3 or 4 and spend 10x longer on each application. Email the recruiter telling them why you are interested and a good fit, tailor your resume to each one.

I’ve sat on plenty of hiring calls and in my personal experience there are just too many candidates applying with the completely wrong credentials or background using LinkedIn “easy apply” or the equivalent. Nearly all of those just basically get “easy rejected” on our first pass through candidates.

theferalrobot··on Ask HN: Is paid ChatGPT Plus worth it?
50 per month? You mean every 3 hours?
theferalrobot··on Cosmological time dilation in the early Universe
Okay that distinction would make sense to me - we know everything was closer together - so what is currently the observable universe was once different sizes but we can’t speak to the grander universe as a whole as having a size in any meaningful terms. That sound correct?
theferalrobot··on Cosmological time dilation in the early Universe
It is an analogy that is used to describe spacetime curvature though… its the wrong analogy.
theferalrobot··on Cosmological time dilation in the early Universe
Wouldn’t that be more applicable in a universe that wasn’t flat (unlike ours as best as we can measure).
theferalrobot··on Cosmological time dilation in the early Universe
You put into words a discrepancy that has annoyed the back of my mind for some time now.

I had actually always learned that it went from single point to infinite instantly but grows more dispersed. But recently have been seeing a lot things in a similar vein, Kurzgesagt put out a video and even a special pin about the size of the universe at different points of time. It would seem if we know that to be the case and we know the growth rate we could then estimate the size of the universe now, but nobody suggests a finite universe with a certain size as the present universe, just the past.

That would additionally suggest that there is a ‘center’ of the universe which I again have always learned as N/A since it is infinite. Really confuses me.

I'm curious about Hebrew as most tools for that online are pretty lackluster.
theferalrobot··on Copyright Registration Guidance: Works containing material generated by AI
Would this not apply to tons of procedural generation tech as well (used in plenty of games and tons of movies)? We give it a bunch of elements and write algorithms to do the generation... but we are ultimately not the ones putting pen to paper so to speak.

I think this is the 100% the right call, some small level of human effort should be required otherwise what is to stop a few individuals from mass copywriting 10 million images and suing everyone that produces something substantially similar.

Having said that, there may be odd knock on effects at play here.

theferalrobot··on Copyright Registration Guidance: Works containing material generated by AI
> I can even prove you didn't make the AI image by asking you to produce a work of similar quality under supervision.

Have you ever seen a court do anything even remotely similar to this other than in Hollywood movies? Not only would there be serious freedom of expression/compelled speech aspects to doing that, it would be entirely impractical and ultimately prove nothing.

theferalrobot··on How Duolingo reignited user growth
I think the fairly mild complaining about software trends is fundamentally different than the societal level rage we see fomenting politically on the extremes. I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiment though.
theferalrobot··on How Duolingo reignited user growth
I subscribed to lingq.com and am loving it. It is a content app as opposed to a traditional language learning app. They have a bunch of content for you to read in your target language (particularly their mini-stories) and you can import news articles or ebooks to read yourself. You can tap any word and get a translation and then practice words you don't know from a chapter or overall. The theory is that just lots of exposure is better than vocab drills and I tend to agree. Some guided learning (a bit of grammar here and there) is helpful but for the most part as long as you aren't a complete beginner content is where its at IMO.
theferalrobot··on Old man yells at cloud

> Playing together now a means an hour of downloading content from an online service before the game even starts — and this particular game is an entirely offline one!

Did nobody else spent the first 8 hours of 00s LAN parties trying to get the equipment set up, the networking to cooperate, the games shared? Then finally after a reformat of windows xp or two around 2am finally getting to the gaming? That was my only somewhat dramatized memory of things. I loved every second of that struggle which is maybe why remember it. This seems to be a case of seeing the past through rose colored glasses. It was sooo much harder to get a group of friends together to play some counter strike than it is today. It’s not even close.

theferalrobot··on Apple changed how reading books works in iOS 16
Weird, I am on iOS 16 on both my iphone and ipad and i still have the swipe animation for books. Apple doesn't really do much A/B testing so this really kinda surprises me.

Edit: Think I figured it out - looks like PDFs still have the page turn animation on iOS but epubs are using the new animation
