theelous3··on Mushroom behind 'tiny people' hallucinations identified
> Domnauer has yet to try the raw mushrooms himself

Coward, basically. I have no idea why on earth you'd travel the world looking for a specific hallucinogen and then just try to sequence it and toss it, and then waste everyone's time writing papers saying you essentially have a hunch about the mushroom's effects.

Beyond terrible science.

theelous3··on I wasted years of my life in crypto
> countries like Venezuela and certain regions in Africa

So approximately none of the world's money and only in the most desperate situations.

I'm all in favor of some kind of vehicle like this, a currency supplemental system that is decentralized and safe. What I don't give a shit about and what is obviously useless are the "usecases" people keep coming up with beyond currency. The absolute #1 best usecase is ticket NFTs - proving you did something on the network to the outside world. As soon as you need to prove to the network something you did on the outside world - 99.99% of the ideas people have - you are back to uselessland.

theelous3··on Apple has locked my Apple ID, and I have no recourse. A plea for help
"we sell gift cards :)"

"and we ban you for buying or redeeming them"

is just top tier comedy honestly.

As soon as I heard the first one of these stories about a guy getting google broad-spectrum banned because a junkbot AI thought his completely normal youtube comment was a nazi rant or whatever else it hallucinated - I bailed on the whole shebang. Hosting your own stuff is, if you're a reader of this site, easy enough and cheap enough there's little reason not to.

theelous3··on I wasted years of my life in crypto
All of this was obvious 8 or so years ago during the first real boom when cryptos pants fell down. All hype no usecase. Here we are now how far along in (20 odd years?) with how many smart people making a genuine concerted effort to build something useful (literally millions over the years?) - and still the only useful thing anyone has ever done with blockchain is buy drugs and have a good time.

As I say, crypto is only useful if the whole world is already on the chain. Until then you need to trust outside sources which undermines the entire deal in trustlessness and undermines it in performance.

theelous3··on Micron Announces Exit from Crucial Consumer Business
The people who occupy the b2b ram buying kind of jobs are not aliens from another planet. Brand awareness in consumer markets, especially ones that are so closely tied to people's jobs (nerds gonna nerd) is going to have a knock on effect. It's not like a clothing brand or something.
theelous3··on German government comes out against Chat Control
I haven't seen anything that suggests chat control would do anything to e2e. I am genuinely curious. It seems to be an often parroted point but... ?

It's just local image hashing and matching? Or is this only one implementation idea?

theelous3··on Web apps in a single, portable, self-updating, vanilla HTML file
I mean, if you can't host a box, hang up the gloves.
theelous3··on Web apps in a single, portable, self-updating, vanilla HTML file
fwiw, for this kind of tech - personal level projects - there is not a snowball's first summer outing in hell's chance I'm going to pay for someone else to host my thing remotely. I would like to just self host, and if it was good I would buy a license for it so I can self host - but I think you have a customer in mind that doesn't exist.

Your ideal customer a) is extremely technically proficient, such that they are even capable of finding this in the first place, and their brain doesn't glaze over at "jQuery is Your Starting Point" - the opening line of your docs. b) They for some reason would rather pay for someone else to do the world's easiest hosting job and deal with whatever baggage and limitations come with this.

Or am I misunderstanding? Like it's a nodejs server on some aws box. Charging people for this is fine, but not allowing them to do it themselves seems... ridiculous?

You gotta eat, I know, but I'm wondering who it is that is ok paying for someone else to do the easiest part what they do for a living.

theelous3··on Why leather is best motorcycle protection [video]
Internet comment safety policing, when you have no idea what went in to making the content, is one of the more tiresome things a person could ever do.
theelous3··on Australia widens teen social media ban to YouTube, scraps exemption
You heard it here first folks - children are too niche now.

2ish billion people, well known for their indirect spending power, are not worth figuring out a simple whitelist system for.

theelous3··on Jeff Bezos doesn't believe in PowerPoint, and his employees agree
This is exactly what I got from reading the article. Your explanation is a less detailed overview packed in to a smaller format. Oh... the double irony?
theelous3··on Jeff Bezos doesn't believe in PowerPoint, and his employees agree
This wisdom is at least certainly more true than claiming the inverse, which is a good indicator. Would amazon be what it is now if everything was powerpoints? It would almost certainly be significantly worse in many areas.

The point about bullet points being trash low effort ways to give information without rigorous thought is self evidently true.

Anyone who is considerate in how they formulate questions before seeking answers will tell you the same thing - often the dedicated formulation of the question leads directly to the answer. By just the same way, giving a full and complete answer can reveal to you a question - which may unravel and destroy your answer, or change the course of your idea.

theelous3··on Chemical knowledge and reasoning of large language models vs. chemist expertise
the far more common and acceptable-to-use-without-introduction acronym for this is SO (significant other)

And to answer the question - the threshold is when people stop complaining about the use :)

theelous3··on The hunt for Marie Curie's radioactive fingerprints in Paris
> from previous experience with you

Are you confusing me with someone else? I don't think we've spoken before.

> I have a feeling you just don't pay attention

To what exactly? Where does this topic come up regularly for you?

> It's a specifically politically charged term used by people who either don't know better or have a bone to pick.

You are the only one picking a bone. I'm merely relating that I don't care and have never heard anyone care before.

> It's not commonly used in Ireland

Did you even read my responses? I said as much myself. You're arguing with the ghost of someone else or something.

theelous3··on The hunt for Marie Curie's radioactive fingerprints in Paris
You're not understanding my comment at all. I'm not talking about the internal use of ROI within Ireland.

Not once have I heard anyone even broach this as a topic. Nobody cares. If someone asks you where you are from, and you tell them Ireland, and they inquire the north or the republic - what are you going to do? Just repeat "Ireland" at them like some kind of contrarian idiot? Tell them you are "not from northern Ireland" so as to rule out all of the places you are not from?

ROI is a perfectly serviceable term for helping people understand what you mean, if the context isn't clear enough already.

theelous3··on The hunt for Marie Curie's radioactive fingerprints in Paris
As an Irish person, yes. Just calling Ireland Ireland when you are specifically being asked what country you are from for official purposes is a bit too orbital a view. Same goes for discussions from within a country holding contested ground sharing the name of a country with an island, blah blah.

It's a complicated subject, and nobody begrudges them the clarity.

theelous3··on What are people doing? Live-ish estimates based on global population dynamics
I think this is just going off sunrise and set +- some estimate. Which does not work as well the farther from the equator you get. It's light for hours up here before you wake, and we sleep like 2-4 hours after sunset.
theelous3··on How to Use Em Dashes (–), En Dashes (–), and Hyphens (-)
What is more intellectual about wanting to complicate the language for one reason, versus wanting to simplify it for another?
theelous3··on How to Use Em Dashes (–), En Dashes (–), and Hyphens (-)
Sorry, lol? You didn't really think this through. This is what that looks like using en/em

-5—2

That looks like dogshit.

It's a mistake in the first place to decide to use only dashes and no spaces to convey all of this lol

-5 - 2 (Everyone knows a sign has no space - if you are building your sign for idiots try some of these:)

-5 > 2 -5->2 -5 <-> 2 -5 to 2 -5...2 Between -5 and 2

blah blah blah

theelous3··on How to Use Em Dashes (–), En Dashes (–), and Hyphens (-)
I have read her in the past and can't say there were world's of meaning between -'s. Can you link an example? I looked again and couldn't see any obvious ones. Generally she just completely abused the -. Does she even use a comma once? lol
theelous3··on How to Use Em Dashes (–), En Dashes (–), and Hyphens (-)
Throwing my hat in here. The sub millimeter difference in the length of a dash conveys no additional meaning or clarity. It is impossible to argue me out of this position.

It's not like you can reliably write these consistently by hand either without going over the top in length to make it extremely obvious.

theelous3··on Apple restricts Pebble from being awesome with iPhones
> I hated Apple’s ecosystem growing up, now I think it’s necessary.

Funny, because the overwhelming majority of people and systems exist outside of it and are doing just fine. This sounds like the sentiment of a crab in a bucket who's feeling quite safe from the sides since it was caught.

theelous3··on Timemap.org – Interactive Map of History
What stage of "map completion" is this at? Seems overall to be very sparse on information. It makes claims like

> Explore over 500k maps down to streets

If I look at the UK - arguably the cartography champions of all time, there is nothing though the years other than the shadow of current day. There is basically nothing on Ireland at any point, even though it's a very well documented history rich area.

theelous3··on Is the attack helicopter dead?
I wasn't telling you that. There is a huge difference in preparing on a meta level for national and international level events, and actually investing in countering specific tactical scenarios. The tactical scenario we are talking about is mid-flight hijack and use of sub $1k drones, by a state, and by civilian script kiddies. It's not a "what if china sits it's navy on a contested Philippine island".
theelous3··on Is the attack helicopter dead?
Even if they landed it (meaning it landed its self due to loss of control) that doesn't fit your criteria, and says absolutely nothing about the topic at hand - battlefield uno reversing mini drones.
