maybe a business opportunity for someone reading this thread
theduder99··on Covid was the US leading cause of deaths for 45 to 54 year-olds in 2021
and they wonder why trust in media is in the dumps.

theduder99··on How big tech runs tech projects and the curious absence of Scrum
great summary. not sure whether to laugh or cry. my org was level 4 and was one of the major factors in causing me to move out.
theduder99··on Google Play bans call-recording apps
I wonder if mobile carriers could offer recording as an additional service.
theduder99··on Show HN: Employees.fyi – Easily compare U.S. workforce demographic data

theduder99··on UK ministers quietly approve Chinese microchip factory takeover
The British government has reportedly approved the sale of the United Kingdom’s largest microchip factory to a firm owned by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), despite concerns over national security.

Newport Wafer Fab (NWF) in Wales, which was forced last year to sell its factory to after failing to pay its debts, will apparently be allowed by the government to be sold to the Chinese-owned firm Nexperia.

theduder99··on Tell HN: China Is Entering Lockdown
CDC changing the definition of the word vaccine to suit their ageneda is not simple 'misinformation'
theduder99··on CEO demanded all employees return full-time to the office. Only half showed up
hard to say how many people still taking them seriously. Anyone who has been paying attention certainly does not. CDC flip-flopped many times, changed the definition of 'vaccine', admitted the 6 foot social distance number was arbitrary, etc.
theduder99··on Ask HN: Does anyone else miss TouchID?
I wonder if the rest of our hands (sans finger tips) are unique "enough" for the purpose of unlocking phones. Would be nice if just holding the phone naturally (palm touching one side of phone and part of a few fingers touching the other side) would be sufficient.
theduder99··on Google plans privacy change similar to Apple’s

Google on Wednesday announced it’s adopting new privacy restrictions that will cut tracking across apps on its Android devices.
The Alphabet-owned company said it is developing new privacy-focused replacements for its advertising ID, a unique string of characters that identifies the user’s device
It follows a similar move made by Apple last year that seemingly upended advertising practices.

theduder99··on Intel to Enter Bitcoin Mining Market with Energy-Efficient Hardware
Intel insists the effort won’t put a strain energy supplies or deprive consumers of chips. The goal is to create the most energy-efficient blockchain mining equipment on the planet, it says.

In addition, the company is avoiding the term mining. Instead, Intel is using the phrase "blockchain accelerators."

theduder99··on Nearly a third of TV ads play to empty rooms
yeah I think ads can also serve as a reminder. for example I'll typically get a pizza once a month. if i see a little caesars ad on tv it will remind me 'oh yeah I like pizza and havent one in awhile' so the task moves closer to the front of the queue. I may not end up going to little caesars specifically to get my pizza fix but I might..
theduder99··on IRS to ditch biometric requirement for online access
thank goodness. I received an ambiguous letter from the IRS last week talking about how I may need to file something special this year related to the $1400 covid credit. I was going to login to the IRS site to get more details until I saw the facial ID requirement and quickly noped away from there.

theduder99··on Apple is no longer letting users stay on iOS 14 with security updates
Even before the iOS 15 announcement, 9to5Mac found out that Apple was working on a new way to deliver alternate security updates to iPhone and iPad users. The company later confirmed that it would offer security patches for iOS 14 to users who weren’t ready to upgrade to iOS 15, but it seems that this is no longer the case.

For some unknown reason, the company has backtracked and is no longer letting users stay on iOS 14 with security updates. Instead, it has reverted to the traditional method of updates where users are forced to install the latest version of the operating system (which is iOS 15) to get the security improvements.

theduder99··on Scientists believed Covid leaked from Wuhan lab but feared discussions
But a leading scientist told Farrar that “further debate would do unnecessary harm to science in general and science in China in particular.” Collins, the former director of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, warned it could damage “international harmony.”

trust the scientists I mean politicians I mean scientists!

theduder99··on Ask HN: My boss doesn't think I'm doing good work, how to proceed?
juniors gotta junior. just kidding! keep your chin up and take the good advice and don't let the criticism get you down. manager may have made unrealistic deadline commitments and should be mad at himself not you. as for hiring more people to a project, that likely means the manager wants the project to be completed faster OR he doesn't want all his eggs in one basket (you). managers must constantly plan for worst case scenarios (like critical people leaving the company)
theduder99··on China Announces Crackdown on Religious Content on the Web
The Measures follows complaints by President Xi Jinping that prohibitions against using the Internet to “advertise” religion are easily eluded, and more should be done to make sure that the Internet and social networks are not used as tools for “religious propaganda.”

The Measures require an “Internet Religious Information Service License,” which can only be granted to organizations part of the five authorized religions (since they should be “legally established,” which is only possible within the five government-controlled organization), to disseminate religious content via the Internet. Any other reference to religion on the web is declared illegal.
