theduder99··on Biden Signs Executive Order Advancing Racial Equity for Government A.I
Today, President Biden signed an executive order to further advance racial equity in federal government. The executive order, which builds on previous equity-focused executive orders issued by the Biden Administration, imposes several new obligations on federal agencies related to racial and socioeconomic equity, including bold new equity obligations for A.I. systems developed, acquired, and used by federal agencies. First, federal agencies are now required to design, develop, acquire, and use A.I. in ways that advance equity—an obligation that echoes EPIC’s own concerns with many of the automated systems used by government agencies. Second, the executive explicitly directs agencies to prevent and address algorithmic discrimination as part of a broader effort to advance civil rights. The Biden Administration’s decision to highlight algorithmic discrimination—even going so far as to explicitly adopt the term’s definition from the White House’s recent Blueprint for an A.I. Bill of Rights—is a major step forward for algorithmic accountability across the federal government.

Very interesting. From my perspective I had thought HN was dominated by the younger crowd.
theduder99··on U.S. FAA says 'unintentionally deleted files' prompted computer outage
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said on Thursday a preliminary review found that contract personnel "unintentionally deleted files" disrupting a key computer system and prompting a nationwide groundstop on Jan. 11 that disrupted more than 11,000 flights.

The FAA said the issue occurred while personnel were working "to correct synchronization between the live primary database and a backup database." The FAA said it "has so far found no evidence of a cyber-attack or malicious intent."

theduder99··on I have no idea what “The MSM” is
yep same with the journalists who pretend to not know the answer to the question "what does woke mean?"
theduder99··on $5M for each longtime Black resident? S.F. has a bold reparations plan
AARAC calls for one-time, lump-sum reparations payments of $5 million to each eligible recipient. The amount could cover the “the economic and opportunity losses that Black San Franciscans have endured, collectively, as the result of both intentional decisions and unintended harms perpetuated by City policy,” the draft states.

To qualify for the payments, residents must be 18 at the time the committee’s proposal is enacted, and have identified as Black or African American on public documents for at least 10 years. They may also have to prove they were born in the city between 1940 and 1996, have resided in San Francisco for at least 13 years, and be someone, or the direct descendant of someone, incarcerated during the war on drugs.

theduder99··on Show HN: Hacker News Without News
Perhaps you don't see the value because you don't value your time in the same way that others do. Skimming through a bunch of titles I'm not interested in does have a cost. The cost is exacerbated if viewing the titles via the New view which includes lots of spam. Also every news site displays hand-picked articles so nothing new there. I've often wished HN would implement a basic story categorization feature so that users could specify their preferences which would apply a basic filter to the homepage story list. Anyway kudos to the author of this new tool!
theduder99··on Investors conclude that Tesla is a carmaker, not a tech firm
Last time I went car shopping, I saw a digital speedometer which irritated me for some reason so I rejected that model from further consideration.
theduder99··on Ask HN: What can I buy that will make life easier?

theduder99··on California’s population shrinks for third straight year
Births outnumber deaths in California, and yet the U.S. Census Bureau says the population shrank again as more than 300,000 people moved out of the Golden State.

The federal agency released these new numbers Thursday showing a third consecutive year of decline.

In 2020, California’s population contracted for the first time in state history, a drop that contributed to the state losing a seat in the House of Representatives.

theduder99··on Ask HN: How to make a simple business website?
If the goal is for the plumber to be able to setup and maintain it on his own then I'd recommend wix or squarespace. Otherwise wordpress as mentioned in the other comment.
theduder99··on After 20 years the Dwarf Fortress devs have to get used to being millionaires
I wasn't even aware of the New button after years of casual browsing :) When I discovered it one day, I felt bad that I hadn't contributed to sorting through the crap.
theduder99··on Ask HN: Why is the Twitter Files buried on HN?
I was just about to make the same post you did. Shadow banning and algorithmic trends manipulation was often treated as a conspiracy theory and yet today when we have screenshots of twitter's VF tools, it's treated like a nothing burger or buried.
theduder99··on South Asian people undergo type 2 diabetes remission with low calorie diets
yep, same deal with exercise. Doesn't matter how, I just wanted some type of movement that I could get into the habit of. Tried a bunch of different activities but was not able to form a habit until I got a rowing machine and even then I still have days where I don't want to use it :)

theduder99··on Google demands HAR files with sensitive info to look into payment issues
this situation is not unique to google. support teams asking for har files is a common practice nowadays, yes even for companies processing payments. if I was you I would escalate this thing on the issuer side again. there are a variety of reasons why the issuer would send a generic "customer should contact issuer" response back to google.
theduder99··on Windows Update is now carbon aware
woke windows behavior is actually probably good for places with electricity rationing
theduder99··on Jack Dorsey: “I grew the company size too quickly”
wow, losing $4 million a day.
theduder99··on Tesla engineers were on-site to evaluate the Twitter staff’s code, workers said
well said. I also think this is about getting rid of all people who worked on those items.
theduder99··on Tell HN: YouTube's web UI just got even worse
Same here. Since YT has been going downhill I've started downloading videos and storing them offline (no not on google drive for G to scan and remove in the future) in a couple spots because I've seen many items in my saved lists get removed or set to private over the years.
theduder99··on Ask HN: Why don't I see gold at the end of the remote working rainbow?
perhaps OP should contact like-minded individuals in this very thread and start a company together! or maybe create a developer job site for companies that do not offer WFH options!
theduder99··on Ask HN: Have you experienced “hiring fraud?”
I still see some companies posting "remote" positions and yet have mandatory 1-2 week bonding exercises per year and the language used makes it sound like a a job perk. Immediate back button for me.
theduder99··on One-on-ones with executives
there's a book written in the 60s called the Effective Executive which I enjoyed reading.
theduder99··on Show HN: I built an extension for analyzing rental properties in Zillow
Looking at the Privacy Practices, I see PII info and authentication info. Can you speak to what exactly is collected and how?
theduder99··on IMDB deleted all negative user reviews for The Rings of Power
I also read negative reviews. But I trust the masses way more than I trust the professional critics. Good example would be metacritic for video games. I look up a game and immediately switch to the User Reviews tab or go to steam reviews.

theduder99··on Wikipedia suspends edits to its 'recession' page

The page was altered at least 47 times over a roughly 24-hour period, with an administrator locking unregistered users out until August
The edit-freeze comes as members of the Biden administration have tried to argue the country is not in a recession by casting doubt on the word's definition
A recession is commonly agreed upon to be two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth
theduder99··on Magnus Carlsen to give up World Championship title
FWIW Hikaru pointed out that some of Magnus's complaints are kinda moot because Fide created the world rapid/blitz championships. If you prefer shorter games, go win that one. If you enjoy classic, then do the classic tournament.
