thecosas··on Amazon to close all of its physical bookstores and '4-star' shops

Amazon will close its 4-star, pop up and bookstore locations on various dates and *notify customers via signage*.
I walked past the Amazon Book Store in San Diego this past weekend and there was a handwritten sign saying something along the lines of "closed due to system outage".

Remember thinking at the time that it was odd, but makes way more sense now.

thecosas··on What the world will be like in a hundred years (1922)
Who's up for writing about what 2122 will look like?
thecosas··on Apple Watch Series 7
I think the biggest hurdle as they get into more "medical" areas is approvals from the FDA (in the US) and international regulatory agencies.

What you recommend based on measurements or people acting on that information can have asterisks on asterisks, but still needs to hit a minimum threshold for usefulness.

thecosas··on Apple Watch Series 7
Not necessarily. See section on non-invasive methods: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7731259/
thecosas··on Apple Watch Series 7
"In the future" is a long time.

Short-term, more likely that they would build integrations with existing stand-alone sensors. For example, glucose readings from Dexcom G7.

thecosas··on Plaid Is Joining Visa
Understood. When I submitted this the WSJ article was still speculating and I thought from the horse’s mouth would be a different perspective.

The Plaid post went live minutes before I submitted, then WSJ updated their article.

thecosas··on Apple Commits $2.5B to Ease California Housing Crunch
More often than not, companies lobby for public policy which is favorable to the company, not necessarily favorable to the employees, neighbors, and communities which they are present in.

thecosas··on Apple Commits $2.5B to Ease California Housing Crunch
Living in California, although not in the Bay area, I don't know that the public expectation was to have Apple or other tech companies do this.

I'm happy for it, but would be happier still to see Apple paying taxes to fund similar programs rather than privatizing something that I agree should be done through the government.

thecosas··on Apple Commits $2.5B to Ease California Housing Crunch
Is it better to have companies pay taxes that can go toward programs like this OR have them "give" money to help form/direct programs like the example here?

I guess they could do both, but what should the standard be?

thecosas··on One of the oldest known human settlements is about to be flooded by a dam
From the end of the article:

The Turkish authorities began filling the reservoir last year but stopped after drought-plagued Iraq requested it keep the Tigris flowing. In this arid part of the world, locals fear the dam will spark “water wars” with Turkey’s neighbors who depend on the Tigris.

Hasankeyf tourist guide Mazlum Yildirimer said he feared the dam will become a source of “endless problems.”

“For the last 100 years, there have been problems with our neighbors because of a lack of water,” he said. “Changing the course of rivers changes the world.”
thecosas··on Stripe Capital
Based on some of the other comments on this post, this fills a gap in the payments vertical Strip operates in; it's going to be much simpler for their current users to get capital rather than switching payment providers or getting "outside" capital from a traditional lender, credit card, etc.
thecosas··on No-deal Brexit opponents defeat government
I believe the idea here is that people would vote for MPs who are for/against Brexit rather than voting directly for/against Brexit themselves.

For specific "iPhone 2019" rumors:

thecosas··on Apple Special Event – September 10
iPhone event primarily; they tend to give the iPhone it's own dedicated time in a single event rather than muddying the message with additional product lines.

I think the Macbook refresh is more likely with the (speculated) iPad event later in the year (October-ish).

thecosas··on Apple Reports Fourth Quarter Results
I always hear that there are issues with Android devices getting the latest security updates, etc since there are manufacturer and carrier dependencies.

Is that still the case or just urban myth at this point?

thecosas··on Apple Reports Fourth Quarter Results
Some pretty good charts here: https://sixcolors.com/post/2018/11/reminder-apple-financial-...

Interested to see Asymco's take. He was super close on the vast majority of his predictions for this quarter according to his Twitter account (https://twitter.com/asymco).

Q1 looks like it's going to be bananas, especially with iPhone XR, new iPad Pros, new Macs, etc.

thecosas··on Texans say voting machines changing straight-ticket choices
Not exactly a dark pattern because it's not intentional... but this is a product failure, not user error.

Shouldn't allow selections until they've all loaded.
