thecleaner··on Don't study or work on LLMs
Not quite sure the hate on this thread. He's right, theres not much you can contribute to LLMs. LLMs are unlike traditional software, they require large expensive machines and access to these is difficult to come by. Compare that with studying databases for example you can get quite far just with a laptop, the bottleneck is the knowledge.

Take for example even simple systems like wav2vec 2.0. The original model was trained on 128Gpus and if one were to try and reproduce the paper on normal hardware it will take months to get to a result. Not just individuals, these applications are put of the reach of all but the most well funded of companies.

thecleaner··on Stripe to start taking crypto payments starting with USDC stablecoin
Is Stripe profitable ?
thecleaner··on Chad Asks US Troops to Cease Operations at Strategic Army Base
I genuinely thought this was a dude named Chad.
thecleaner··on Software Company HashiCorp Is Weighing a Potential Sale
Is Stripe a Dev tool ? What about all of AWS ? I guess the statement should be its impossible to make money selling replicable IP
thecleaner··on Show HN: Wife couldn't find a dev job so I built a tool to automate the search
this is incredible !
thecleaner··on Meta outage
So not really an outage ? Just meta
thecleaner··on Software Infrastructure 2.0: A Wishlist (2021)
These are bad ideas. They are software wishes which no enterprise will pay for. Infra is setup once so optimising for setup time doesn't do the trick. Rollouts should take time deliberately so faulty software don't lead to an outage in seconds. No infra provider will bother turning off infra as again it can have impact on availability. AWS is optimising resource usage anyway barring a few services like Cloudwatch
thecleaner··on A 'scam manual' written to help immigrants not become victims
Yup Nikola Tesla was another immigrant who was scammed almost hundred years ago.
thecleaner··on No focus, no fights, and a bad back – 16 ways technology has ruined my life
some of these resonated with me so hard. Like the password one and robot one. I rarely read other people's opinions - they usually fall in fixed categories and you can pre-generate them anyway. Its also not useful to walk through reasoning on the internet since the factual accuracy is questionable. As such, I dont have trouble with stupid people on the internet (tbh i find them adorable). I rarely even read comments on HN these days and hopefully nobody reads this one either.
thecleaner··on A man has been swatted 47 times for making a joke about Norm Macdonald
Just gonna leave it here - whats so special about Norm MacDonald
thecleaner··on Judge blocks 'unfathomable' $56B Tesla pay deal
he should be allowed to keep the package. investors are the pos bunch esp the activist do-more-layoffs ones. The targets were met. A deal is a deal.
thecleaner··on One Billion Row Challenge Shows Java Can Process 1B Rows File in 2 Seconds
Is this considered abnormal for Java ? I presume this was without GC pauses
thecleaner··on MBAs who can't find jobs
People like you are what cause an uptick in the economy. Thanks a lot for sharing.
thecleaner··on Post-mortem for last week's incident at Kagi
What I gather is this was a rate limiting issue. Rate limiting is a standard pattern for API platforms but I wonder how many consumer facing services implement it.
thecleaner··on NYT vs. GPT: Microsoft finds itself on the other side of an industry
No it wont lead to anywhere. They will just get rid of the NYT bits of the corpus, then settle or just flat out not care if they lose. Transformers are relatively easy to train they arent GANs, the bottleneck is hardware and OpenAI has those bits sorted out.
thecleaner··on Beginner dev looks at how YouTube sends videos
Now that is how you spend new year. Also beginner dev ? Dont be so modest mate.
thecleaner··on Economic downturn and the influence of AI are claiming numerous jobs
How is unemployment so low then ? Most of these Anerican companies and layoffs happened in US too. Indian startups laying people off is due to less cheap money and faulty business models. Job growth in India is stunted due to economic mismanagement and the fact that the country doesn't do much manufacturing or isnt as important in the global supply chain. And the influence of AI doesnt show up anywhere. Overall a poorly written article.
thecleaner··on Korea to welcome 'digital nomads' with new visa starting Jan. 1
I understand that my comment was reductive but statistics do point to this problem. People don't say this part aloud for some reason. There was even a sting operation in India about Korean restaurants denying entrance to indians while on indian soil which is actually against consumer laws in india (you cannot deny service). There's videos on youtube about the sort of racism that people experience. You need only search YouTube for "koreans racism against indians" for multiple anecdotes. It is the kind of behaviour that would get people in trouble in places like the US. Granted the US isn't exactly a bastion of equality but much better. So even on a nomad visa I would much rather stay at a western country or go to indonesia.
thecleaner··on Korea to welcome 'digital nomads' with new visa starting Jan. 1
Knowing the racism in Korea, no thank you.
thecleaner··on Many VCs have stopped investing this year
yet these companies are why software developer salaries are high. If this goes your way, its the engineers who will be affected. the patagonia guys will just move to consulting and make partner etc. Which btw is another bullshit profession which doesn't make anything other than ppts.
thecleaner··on Show HN: Chrome Reaper
US NIST, doing the important work. Very cool, very useful.
thecleaner··on Mitchell reflects as he departs HashiCorp
Can we all take a moment to reflect how great is HN ? People have launched their software products here and gone on to become wildly successful or industry standards. I think our field is lucky we have a space where we can all enjoy people's successes, get inspired, be sourly or sarcastic (lol), have meaningful discussions and its all done with Lisp, HTML tables, an unstyled "add comment" button (please don't change) and a bunch of bare-metal servers which sometimes catch fire along with the discussions. Its quite wonderful.
thecleaner··on Mitchell reflects as he departs HashiCorp
Man you're a rocket ship. Such an inspiration and congratulations on your success.
thecleaner··on Factors driving a productivity explosion
I think in general less people going to the office is better for those who have to go to the office as well. Less density of population, less competition for housing, less congestion on roads. The more offices that are in place, the more housing prices go up, the more congestion etc.
thecleaner··on Google shares sink following reports that some of their AI demo was faked
They dont really have a signal as well. The stock price could be due to external reasons like growth of mobile, growth of internet etc. These are the products that Google had always had. MSFT under Satya otoh launched a major initiative into the cloud and delivered growing revenue yoy.
thecleaner··on When would you ever want bubblesort?
Bubble sort's true complexity is O(n+d) where d is the number of inversions in the array. So if an array is almost sorted better to use bubble sort.
thecleaner··on Ask HN: Should I focus on promotions or job-hopping?
What kind of messed up clients do you have ? and what space is this ?
thecleaner··on McKinsey Developer Productivity Review
I love it when McKinsey talks about software engineering. Lots of stupid laughable content. Makes my day.
thecleaner··on I'm fed up with it, so I'm writing a browser
OP you go write that code and profile and make sure you get some real world feedback on it. I hope it DOES result in a real functional browser.
thecleaner··on Show HN: I automated half of my typing
Just shut up and take my money !
