thebitstick··on Ask HN: Am I getting older or did typing on the iPhone become unbearable?
Recent iOS convert. I miss my number bar, but otherwise I find the typing experience on iOS to be great, especially on iOS 16. Just disable autocorrect.
thebitstick··on YouTube Premium Price Increase
Price hike is even worse if you're a stubborn Apple user who prefers managing subscriptions with IAP.

> we will be increasing your Premium family plan price to $29.99/month. Apple will continue to manage your payment. Note that the rate for Premium family plans signed up via our website will be $22.99/month

thebitstick··on Firefox Beta for Android now supports custom add-on collections
Orion for iOS allows the installation of Firefox addons (albeit with lots of beta bugs).
thebitstick··on DuckDuckGo for Mac beta now open to the public
Orion is another WebKit browser that makes WebExtensions installable via its own extensions API. It's not perfect but it's miles better than anything Safari has and allows for existing Firefox/Chrome extensions to be installed. It only supports MV2 and won't be affected by the MV3 changes in Chrome world.

If DDG wanted to they could replicate this work to allow for MV2 WebExtensions to be installed.

thebitstick··on DuckDuckGo for Mac beta now open to the public
WebKit is technically cross-platform, but browsers that use it only exist in Linux and Mac world. If DDG ports their browser to Windows and doesn't switch to Blink, then it will be the only well-maintained WebKit browser for Windows.

thebitstick··on Cloud desktops aren't as good as you'd think
I have 100Mb/s internet and I cannot notice it on Ethernet on my M1 MacBook Air or on Wi-Fi on my iPhone or iPad. Wi-Fi on the M1 Air is garbage so it's very noticable there.

thebitstick··on Google and Framework making an upgradable Chromebook, starting at $999
With Framework making it, it's really just a laptop that happens to run ChromeOS. $100 less, probably due to not having to pay for a Windows license.

I do hope Linux can still be installed on it...

thebitstick··on Systemd support is now available in WSL

For the same reasons people buy iPads and use them as laptops.

thebitstick··on Ask HN: Have You Upgraded to iOS 16?
Have been using it since the developer betas were first released.

Multistop routing for Maps should have not taken so long to be added, Family Album is nice, Dictation is a lot better, 'Copy subject' is an awesome addition to the native image viewing, new lock screen is pretty nice and while I don't care for medication tracking, my mom surely will.

thebitstick··on WebAuthn and Passkeys
I had originally written this after WWDC 2022, and the incredibly low amount of news coverage shocked me enough into researching first-hand the future of passwordless sign-in that Apple/Google/Microsoft want us all to be in.

Nothing has changed in iOS 16 or macOS 13 since WWDC 2022 to suggest that users will have the ability to export their private keys. Passkeys are still a lock-in feature.

Passkeys was not mentioned during the iPhone 14 Event.

I don't have an Android device with Android 11+ to be able to test this, so if any users are able to test out [WebAuthn](https://webauthn.me/) and check if the created passkey via Google's password/passkey manager allows for exporting, it would really be appreciated.

Perhaps this changes with user backlash once enough websites support WebAuthn, but I doubt it.

thebitstick··on iOS 16 Available September 12th
Time to pay up! Exporting is impossible on Apple's implementation of Passkeys. Even exporting your entire keychain of passwords doesn't result in any WebAuthn keys, just standard passwords. Tested on macOS 13 and iOS 16 betas. I sincerely doubt this will change with the official releases. Google's implementation is probably the same. Microsoft hasn't done a thing yet to support passkeys besides what Edge and Windows Hello do.
thebitstick··on Apple Removes SIM Card Tray on All iPhone 14 Models in U.S.
SO many of the comments are so short-sighted. The minute Apple does something everyone else follows. Just because iPhone isn't the majority in other countries doesn't mean every single new Android phone won't also exclude physical SIMs and thus force telcos everywhere to adopt eSIMs.
thebitstick··on Email doesn't suck – it's email clients that need improving
Still waiting for them to replace the desktop app on macOS with an Electron app. The fact that no mobile/desktop client for Outlook doesn't have the like feature like Outlook Web is frustrating.
thebitstick··on GeForce Now: A Review
I had to Ctrl/⌘ + F because I couldn't find anyone mentioning Shadow. Why is GeForce Now still more popular than Shadow, especially when Nvidia limits the games you are allowed to play.

I haven't plugged my local gaming PC into the wall in months. The future of Mac gaming for me is Shadow.
