Ask HN: Have You Upgraded to iOS 16?

Does anyone know how stable the recent beta builds of iOS 16 were? These are usually a pretty good predictor of whether there will be issues with the public release.

Also, what are some favorite features? I don't expect to care much about the lock screen stuff, and until the update is widely adopted the Messages editing capability won't matter much. Is there much to be excited about?

I can't tell if this is sarcastic. I assume most people on HN do eventually update their iDevices, but the rest of the post seems possibly tongue-in-cheek. If you aren't being sarcastic and have upgraded, please do share your thoughts on stability and new features, since that's what this community is for!

according to my experience it is true for most iOS users, but definitely not for Macintosh users.

I am always on the latest IOS but 2 major releases behind on macOS due to dependencies on critical applications. I think that's fairly typical for production machines.

I usually wait until the '.1' update. There are always some fixes that need to occur with the first rollout and they do a pretty good job of fixing those in the first update.

I thought that Microsoft patented that behaviour. /s "If it compiles, ship it and let the users test it".

Apple tends to do that to their third-party developers more so than their users.

I did, I like the lockscreen features. It’s just a shame that my main use-case is to switch to sleep focus and then it completely blurs that beautiful earth or moon image. I think it would be cool to go to sleep knowing where the day is turning into night.

Oh and with darkmode I had a bright lockscreen and a dark startscreen picture, that seems impossibly now? Where are the dark stock images?

And you can’t reorder the lockscreens, that’s not handy.

Have been using it since the developer betas were first released.

Multistop routing for Maps should have not taken so long to be added, Family Album is nice, Dictation is a lot better, 'Copy subject' is an awesome addition to the native image viewing, new lock screen is pretty nice and while I don't care for medication tracking, my mom surely will.

Why are maps part of the OS? don't they get upgrades as an app?

Been running it since Public Beta 1. Now running the release build. It is fine.

I always join the beta program. I experienced no problems.

My most used feature is definitely the medication reminders.

Adding medicines and vitamins was simple.

So far the only major difference I've seen is in how you get to 'hidden' notifications

Can someone help - somehow with the iOS 15 - when watching videos the buttons to skip ahead etc. were on the bottom so when skipping ahead they wouldn’t obscure the picture, now they’re dead in the middle?

No complaints here, I've been running it since around public beta 2. I like the new lock screen features best. It's been very stable and didn't have much, if any effect on battery life on my iPhone 13 Pro.

Which new features are you looking forward to? I expect to be asked by family members whether to upgrade and at this point I can't really recommend it.

The new lock screen stuff will just be confusing for my parents (to whom I provide tech support), and I'm not aware of any amazing new features that would make life noticeably better for people in their (or even my) demographic. I watched the WWDC keynote several months ago, and I follow Apple news daily. But it just now occurred to me that there aren't any new features that I'm particularly looking forward to. What am I missing?

I will certainly not like the new lock screen stuff but looking forward to editing in iMessage and multiple stops in Maps. Nothing special, but lockdown mode seems interesting.

The revoke mail feature seems useless, technical this means that the mail is send some time later, and in this time frame it is possible to revoke? (bringing more delay into delivery)

I could actually see myself using revoke mail, but more on desktop than iPhone. I remember back in the pre-wifi era, I would sometimes realize I forgot something in an email and quickly yank you my ethernet cable. I've tried doing the modern version of this (turn of wifi), but I have never been able to get to it in time. Perhaps I should make a function key that turns off wifi (or force-quits Mail?).

Plug the router out?

It's very far away! I suppose the fastest thing I could do is sleep my computer, and then turn off the router before waking it back up. But I don't know if a sleep command will interrupt the process of sending a mail message. I suspect it would if a large upload was involved, but I have my doubts about a smaller message.

Maybe use a hotkey to tell a smart plug to power off? You wouldn't be able to use that to turn it back on with your router being disconnected but that can be done by hand.

The revoke mail feature has been a feature in gmail for 10+ years (though it probably was a “labs” feature at first). “Undo send”. And there, yeah, it’s just a configurable delay - I use 15s. I’ve used it (and been thankful for it) many times

Upgraded this morning. No surprises or crashes etc.

The lockscreen features left me cold. Keyboard haptic feedback is great.

And because the App Store does not allow to download the last version of an app compatible with an outdated version of iOS, I [as a 6s-ipadPro1 owner] should install now all the apps I need for the decades to come in their last iOS15-compatible version.

Note: I did that for my ipad1. And guess what? Those apps still work like a charm.

For others curious: the iPhone 6S was released in September 2015.

And my car was released in 2008.

How many years of software updates did that car get?

Fourteen years, so far.

What kind of software update have you received whose job was not address a class-action-lawsuit-sized software problem?

Better switch to an Android phone with longer support!
