theaccordance··on You Don't Need Health Insurance
This is a reckless opinion piece and it's going to leave some unfortunate soul with a bill that absolutely wrecks their financial situation.

I'm billed $1M annually for my health care (Stage IV Cancer), and yes, I likely could get that dollar amount lowered through different tactics, but for a measly $9k a year (premiums + deductible), I don't have to deal with any of that nonsense. $9k for $1M in health care is a deal.

theaccordance··on Ask HN: Technical forums that are not dominated by pedantry?
Dev.to is pretty good at promoting a constructive community, but you still have trolls who will double down that their opinion must become your opinion
theaccordance··on It’s over Anakin, I have the Highground
Don’t try it.
theaccordance··on It’s over Anakin, I have the Highground
You underestimate my power
theaccordance··on Tell HN: Unpaid home assignments are not ok
You can take any position you like with your career, but I suspect you’re gonna be limiting yourself on available companies with this stance. A better position would be to improve how you evaluate a company prior to engaging in a coding test.
theaccordance··on [dead]
I'm surprised this is sitting so high in the board given it's not really anything new, shocking, or... coherent.
theaccordance··on Paid Cerberus 'lifetime' licenses are expiring
Welcome to the exceptions, population you
theaccordance··on Paid Cerberus 'lifetime' licenses are expiring
Lifetime licenses are the pyramid scheme of software sales; it’s not a sustainable model and generally they’re offered for the lifetime of the product, not the purchaser.
theaccordance··on Dear Devs, please stop using Medium for your contents
Rolling your own blog still requires time & effort to start/maintain, without any of the organic reach of publishing platforms.
theaccordance··on Counterfeit books “shipped and sold by Amazon”?
My business partners and I had a satire book published through Amazon's platform for a couple years. This past spring the book gained some viral traction thanks to Unilad (or similar site - I forget which), but that attention led to copycats submitting a takedown notice on the book before republishing our book as their own.

The appeal process was a complete joke; we had to get a lawyer involved to get Amazon to release the royalties it withheld because of the take-down.

theaccordance··on Ask HN: How did your startup change after an exit?
It’s been 18 months since my company (non-founding engineer) was acquired, and in that time I’ve watched the majority of the team I spent the last 5 years around depart. I was engineer #10, and today only 2 of that original 10 remain (besides myself).

Of the team we had at the time of being acquired, 2/3 have left. Some of those departures were voluntary, others because their roles were eliminated (replaced with different skill sets).

The monolith we built over 6 years continues to live, but its days are numbered, as we’re shifting new development off of the project in favor of an updated stack.

The P/E firm that acquired us implemented a different type of equity system going forward: much like death, you can’t take it with you if you leave before the next exit.

theaccordance··on 102KB ought to be enough for any email
My issue with this article is the narrative: That the truncation technique is applied for the benefit of memory management on the device. What about network throughput? Many of us have the privilege of blazing fast connections, both wired & wireless, but the same cannot be said for other locales.
theaccordance··on Senior Developers Are Getting Rejected for Jobs
I accept the fact that there will be a coding gate with the interview process, but I dislike the lack of transparency regarding the process and grading criteria
theaccordance··on Otonomo, with nearly $55M in funding, is cloning our product
I would have found the article more damning had the author cited examples beyond standards-based protocols like OAuth
theaccordance··on Thieves reportedly used car-sharing app to steal 100 cars in Chicago
I'm curious what the hack ends up being
theaccordance··on Ask HN: Startup failed after years of work – Can I even get a job now?
Good news for you: You're entering the job market at some of the lowest unemployment numbers seen.

You don't need a degree once you're able to demonstrate your experience. Just update the CV, curate your Github and float your best code examples to the top for discussion & visibility by others, and do your research on the company & people whom you interview with.

You got this

theaccordance··on Amazon’s Alexa Has 80k Apps and No Runaway Hit
While I feel Alexa has a lot of potential from the couple POC apps I've developed, the device class itself simply isn't where I need it to be to fully capitalize on it yet.
theaccordance··on Digitally preview incoming USPS mail and packages
Yeah that doesn't align with my experience. All of my spam is scanned and shown in my daily preview
theaccordance··on Digitally preview incoming USPS mail and packages
^ Didn't get the joke.

I'm aware you have to register; I've been registered for 6 months. My comment is based off of 6 months of these daily emails.

theaccordance··on Digitally preview incoming USPS mail and packages
Except every exception you've outlined has been delivered to me in my daily previews since signing up 6 months ago
theaccordance··on Everyone should read support emails
You have your folks on the CS frontline knowledge share their experiences with the company
theaccordance··on Digitally preview incoming USPS mail and packages
You mean to tell me I can get a daily spam message showing me previews of all the spam coming to my physical inbox?
theaccordance··on Everyone should read support emails
There are better ways to understanding your customer than encouraging your entire team to give attention to inbound support.

theaccordance··on [dead]
"text messaging ravens" LOL
theaccordance··on Ask HN: Why is Google discriminating with my Android application?
You shouldn't assume that your app is equal in its architecture to those you deem as competitors unless you're acquainted with their codebases. Focus on how you can improve your own codebase first to address the rejection issues.
theaccordance··on Ask HN: Is source code included?
You're either providing a product or a service.
theaccordance··on Ask HN: How Much Reliance on 3rd Party Tech Is Too Much?
What I would do:

1. Determine your liability to the customers in the event the APIs are discontinued

2. Assess the risk of the APIs getting shut down

3. Have a contingency plan in place in the event you have to scramble.

theaccordance··on Ask HN: I'm a Swift dev. Should I learn Obj-C if I want to get an iOS job?
Odds are that while you'll write software in swift, you'll probably encounter other people's code written in Obj-C. This could come either from inherited code (ex:project you took over) or open-source components you may use. It's best to have some familiarity with Obj-C, that way you can at least navigate and understand the logic.
theaccordance··on I joined a startup and it's been a month they haven't paid me, what can i do?
You need to look up the appropriate labor laws for your country/state in order to determine what options are available to you
