Been this way for months
theaccordance··on Ask HN: Where would you live if you could live anywhere?
Chicago, Denver, The California Coast
theaccordance··on Please don't use Slack for FOSS projects
This comes off as a snobbish article IMO. I don't want to discredit the work the author has done, but it's all over a communication tool, one that many of us have adopted in other environments. Having open source projects on the same platform as our other groups is simply a matter of convenience for the project organizer.
theaccordance··on Google is Forcing Routebuilder to Shut Down
Pretty sure that Under Armor's MapMyFitness webapp has a route builder that uses the Google Maps API as well
theaccordance··on Ask HN: A simple, low-tech way to reduce the package theft problem from homes?
And if package drop boxes aren't viable then fine, let's just move onto Robotic Butlers who can answer the door and accept packages
theaccordance··on Ask HN: A simple, low-tech way to reduce the package theft problem from homes?
I live in Chicago and deal with package theft at least once a year; this thought of dummy packages is not realistic and I'd never participate.

A more realistic solution: Package drop boxes. They can be either key or one-way door to help deter theft, and provide an added benefit of protecting a package against the elements.

Obviously, all packages weren't sized equal, but if you're having things delivered regularly, you can determine the type of cubic storage you'd need for a drop box to cover the majority of your deliveries.

theaccordance··on Ask HN: Why don't programming languages have special “commit comments”?
We could debate the merits of a feature like this, but a more reasonable answer is that there simply hasn't been a demand large enough to encourage any languages to add it. Personally, it would add no value to my workflow.
theaccordance··on Is the 1871 hub in Chicago worth it?
If you're going to take advantage of the events and networking with others at 1871, then it's worth it.

If you're just looking for a place to work on nights and weekends, there's plenty of excellent coffee shops around our beautiful city that you can use instead.

theaccordance··on Ask HN: Developers vs. machines, how long will it last?
Except someone has to write those generators...
theaccordance··on Ask HN: Ghost vs. Wordpress
Given the fact you're asking this question, I'm thinking you're probably not ready to move to Ghost for your blog. Stay with what you're familiar with until you get a chance to tinker with ghost in a sandbox environment.
theaccordance··on Clipboard.js: Modern Copy to Clipboard
Thank you for sharing this, it could not have come at a better time for a little side project I've been cooking up.

I didn't know Dogs were eligible to vote
theaccordance··on Ask HN: Best way to authenticate Angular/node app
Scotch.io has several articles on the topic: https://scotch.io/?s=authentication
theaccordance··on Cybiko
Talk about a forgotten throwback!

I had one of these in high school; won it off of some contest or promo. We'd use it during our large school assemblies to chat with each other across the gym instead of paying attention lol

theaccordance··on Ask HN: How do you promote your side projects?
What I've done/will do on the next project:

- Pre-release signup to be notified when it's available

- Product Hunt

- Create a "Show HN" post on Hacker News

- Reddit

theaccordance··on [dead]
So all of this happens to you six months ago, and now you're finally sharing it with HN?

BRB, getting the world's smallest violin out to play

theaccordance··on Ask HN: Won't somebody fix the Guardian banner
I'd suggest one of two things:

1. Contact The Guardian and share the issue with them

2. Forget about it, and delete this Ask HN post.

theaccordance··on Ask HN: Can you suggest some good JavaScript projects to read and learn?
I could, but JavaScript has such a broad application these days that you should be more specific as to what you're goals are
theaccordance··on Are other software engineering jobs more fun?
Taking a firm stance on salary cuts is bad advice.
theaccordance··on Are other software engineering jobs more fun?
I bounced around 4 different companies after changing careers into software development before I found my ideal match; don't be afraid to get back out there and find something more satisfying.
theaccordance··on Ask HN: Can Reddit overcome this mess?
If Twinkies can make a comeback, then it's completely possible that Reddit can overcome this mess.

Whether or not that happens remains to be seen.

theaccordance··on Ask HN: Git or Mercurial for beginning students?
On whether to use Git or Mercurial, my gut suggests you teach Git, but if you have the ability, poll alumns of the program and/or companies who are nabbing grads to see what they have/haven't used. Personally, I've never been around an environment that uses Mercurial, but that's just my particular situation.

Also, the basics of version control should be taught in the very first programming class. You can then expand on the basics in further courses.

theaccordance··on Ask HN: Can I work for free for your startup?
Hi George, welcome to Hacker News. If you're looking to join a startup, here's a couple suggestions on how to improve your odds when posting on HN:

- Make things easier for the companies you're trying to attract. Provide links to your Resume, LinkedIn, and/or Portfolio in your Ask HN post.

- A Jack of All Trades is a Master of None. You mention having background in Business, Marketing, Graphic Design, and UI/UX. Pitch 1 competency, preferably your strongest.

- Find ways to build experience and reputation in your current situation. I'm not seeing either based on what you've written.

theaccordance··on Ask HN: Beyond Google, Wikipedia, quora for realtime search
Based on your description, it sounds like you're looking for a more intelligent search result set, not "realtime"
theaccordance··on Ask HN: How often do you change your phone's ringtone?
Last time I set a ringtone on my phone, John Kerry was running for president...
theaccordance··on Ask HN: Every time I register a new domain, I get spammed
There's a public WHOIS record that's associated to every domain registered that spammers mine for both your email address as well as your physical mailing address.

Best way to stop this kind of spam is to simply pay for privacy protection on your domains. Privacy Protection is an annual, per domain service that shouldn't add more than a couple dollars to your yearly renewal costs.

theaccordance··on Ask HN: Do people have any luck using eLance or Upwork as a client or freelance?
Leveraging your existing network of contacts and communication mediums like Twitter
theaccordance··on Ask HN: Where do you go for sound career advice?
I find the best career advice comes from those who are where I'm trying to get to. Ideally, not too far ahead in their own career, that way the advice they'll impart will be fresh and relative to the current industry environment.

Re: recruiters, doesn't hurt to ask questions with recruiters for placement agencies; they get paid when you get placed so it's in their interest to get you hired.

theaccordance··on Ask HN: Do people have any luck using eLance or Upwork as a client or freelance?
Looked at eLance a couple years ago but never followed through. Appeared very tedious in terms of setting up a profile and submitting proposals, I had easier methods available to me to obtain work and utilized them instead.
theaccordance··on Ask HN: How do I get contributors interested in my open source project?
My general assumption about contributors is that the labor they're investing provides some personal benefit to themselves. That could be either the value they'll receive from using the gem in their own projects, or as a portfolio showcase when selling themselves to clients or potential employers.

Since you didn't provide a link to your gem, we'll also assume you haven't built it yet. If you want complete strangers to help you, you'll most likely need to build it yourself until it's reached enough popularity that people are submitting issues and requests for feature enhancements.
