the_svd_doctor··on Toll roads are spreading in America
Some people just set it to 3+...
the_svd_doctor··on Reading NFC Passport Chips in Linux
Yes. In fact I just filled a UK ETA for my 1 year old daughter, and after taking a photo of the MRZ the application asked me to confirm if she was born in 1924 or 2024 :-)
the_svd_doctor··on Ask HN: What are good high-information density UIs (screenshots, apps, sites)?
This is incredible. Almost feels like another world.
the_svd_doctor··on Flying Somewhere? You May Need That Real ID.
It should remain true.
the_svd_doctor··on Flying Somewhere? You May Need That Real ID.
You can bring food. You’re right about drinks though. Albeit it’s not very hard to find free water in airports.
the_svd_doctor··on Foreign visits into the U.S. fell off a cliff in March
Aren't all immigration "arrests" all "detentions", technically speaking (not that it makes any difference in reality - you're behind bars)? Aren't ICE prisons called "detention centers"?
the_svd_doctor··on Make C string literals const?
Right but some code will stop compiling, no?
the_svd_doctor··on The average college student today
In my EU country, lots of first year students are kind of lost and are picking their major more or less at random (or very unprepared). Very low passing rates in first year are very common. It gets better in 3rd year and after.
the_svd_doctor··on Xfinity XB3 hardware mod: Disable WiFi and save 2 watts
In SF Bay Area my PG&E rate is also close to 0.5$/kWh…
the_svd_doctor··on Station of despair: What to do if you get stuck at end of Tokyo Chuo Rapid Line
I went to Japan (first time) a few months ago, and I was blown away by almost everything (including what you mention). It's just so different from the US in almost every way, but so nice overall (people, cities, transit). I loved it and want to go back already.
the_svd_doctor··on GitHub Git Operations Are Down
Ha so that's why my git pull were so slow. I should have checked HN faster.
the_svd_doctor··on FTC bans hidden junk fees in hotel, event ticket prices
Personally that's all I'm asking for. Transparent pricing. It amazes me how far business will go to to just hide how much they want to charge me.

Recently in California, restaurant have been great at making their prices as difficult as possible to try to figure out.

the_svd_doctor··on FIDO Alliance publishes new spec to let users move passkeys across providers
> Resident keys essentially kill physical tokens.

Can you elaborate? I'm curious. Is there a storage problem?

the_svd_doctor··on FTC Announces "Click-to-Cancel" Rule Making It Easier to Cancel Subscriptions
I get you. AFAICT what's included for airlines is basically "get me from A to B".

There are usually ways to filter out by seat types, though, both on airlines websites and in places like Google flights. In my experience those are also pretty accurate.

the_svd_doctor··on FTC announces "click-to-cancel" rule making it easier to cancel subscriptions
For plane that's pretty unfair. If you don't get any ancillary fees, the price you see is almost exactly up to the cent what you pay.

Now if you get any extra, sure. But that's a different problem from Airbnb hiding 100% of the cost in mandatory cleaning fees.

the_svd_doctor··on CuPy: NumPy and SciPy for GPU
It does (for NVIDIA at least)
the_svd_doctor··on Make your electronics tamper-evident
Very cool. I actually learned something by reading just the abstract, which does not happen often.
the_svd_doctor··on What Visa earnings tell us about the state of the payments industry
Amazing episode - highly recommend it.
the_svd_doctor··on How to optimize a CUDA matmul kernel for cuBLAS-like performance (2022)
FWIW Triton can actually be used pretty easily from C++ straight using MLIR. XLA does that. Maybe not exactly a frontend but not that far.
the_svd_doctor··on Lowercase – A simple way to take and share notes
https://www.lowercase.app/pricing/ looks pretty clear to me. You can optionally subscribe to support the project, but otherwise it's free.
the_svd_doctor··on Online Cryptography Course (2017)
I took both his in-person and coursera classes, and Dan is a great teacher. Highly recommend.
the_svd_doctor··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
I'm sure Peter can answer this much better than I can, but just in case: you might want to look into Direct Consular Filing and whether it applies to you https://www.boundless.com/immigration-resources/direct-consu... https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/immigrat...
the_svd_doctor··on New Federal Rule Caps Credit Card Late Fees at $8
If there is no minimum payment then, by definition, there can't be any late fee since you're never late and can simply not pay forever without being delinquent.
the_svd_doctor··on New FCC Broadband Standards Should Consider Latency
The fact that my internet connection drops for, say, 5 mins twice a day is enough to make me go to the office and work from there. It's surprisingly disruptive.
the_svd_doctor··on Ask HN: Who is feeling Depressed and Why? (Feb 2024)
Ho man. I'm so sorry for your loss. Can't imagine how that must feel like.

> Treasure your loved ones while you have them.

So true, yet so easy to forget sometimes during the day to day life.

the_svd_doctor··on Wi-Fi jamming to knock out cameras suspected in nine Minnesota burglaries
I have reolink PoE cameras which I really like (work well with HA too), although they're a bit more expensive than 50$.
the_svd_doctor··on USCIS announces strengthened integrity measures for H-1B program
With OPT and STEM OPT that’s _sort of_ the case, albeit for 3 years, not 5.
the_svd_doctor··on USCIS announces strengthened integrity measures for H-1B program
Before, multiple companies could register the same person for the lottery, therefore increasing the odds for said person.

This is now no longer possible.

Why it took so long to implement this rule is a mystery though. Seems like such an obvious loophole.

the_svd_doctor··on How I got an O-1 visa as a software engineer
And EB-1 has quotas. So even if you qualify it may take many many years for Indians/Chinese folks.
the_svd_doctor··on How I got an O-1 visa as a software engineer
Makes no difference. It's a temporary status, not permanent residency.

It potentially helps you slightly for EB-1 (permanent residency for "extraordinary people") since it has similar requirements, and EB-1 has slightly better quotas than EB-2 (because fewer folks qualify ; EB-2 is for skilled workers like your typical tech employee).

If you're from India it's still a very long way out.
