thdrdt··on Reddit app got 50M downloads by making mobile web experience miserable
I believe you can view subs and comments only when you are linked from the homepage.
thdrdt··on Release of methane gas from the seafloor in the Southern Hemisphere
Some people in my country are very negative about immigrants. 'They should stay in their own country'.

But I really believe the world is going to be different in 10 years from now. And it is very likely a lot of people must migrate to other places because conditions become unlivable.

You might become a foreigner yourself one day.

thdrdt··on Nvidia Unveils GeForce RTX 30 Series GPUs
I was wondering if all benchmarks use the OptiX features or only the CUDA features. In software like Blender this makes a huge difference. OptiX can be twice as fast as CUDA. So of benchmarks don't use the OptiX capabilities then they will miss a lot of available speed.
thdrdt··on Applebot
Doesn't it depend on a lot of things? For example you can only do head requests to see if a page changed since a given timestamp. If not then there is no need to process it.
thdrdt··on Self-driving cars learn to read the body language of people on the street
"Firstly this is comparing autopilot to self driving"

No I was not. I understand autopilot is not self driving. But since even basic collision detection is still difficult the step from autopilot to self driving will take years imho.

"Second there is the fact that cars that are self driving will still crash at launch."

Maybe. But imho that day will still be years from now.

"Finally, I guess, will people believe in the statistics or will they go with their beliefs."

When self driving is ready for the road I believe it will be much safer than people behind the wheel. Systems like adaptive cruise control, lane keeping and autopilot are already safer than people.

The problem right now is that all the 'glitches' are potential deadly.

Imagine all the cars in the world would to become self driving with the current tech. It would be a mess. The moment self driving cars would make less of a mess than humans it will be ready for the road.

thdrdt··on Self-driving cars learn to read the body language of people on the street
Meanwhile a Tesla on autopilot crashes into a stationary police car on the highway.

As much as I like the tech I still think we are years away from self driving cars.

Edit: as other pointed out it looks like this recent accident was with a 4 year old autopilot version (software, 8 year old hardware). So it is not completely fair to use it as example. But the reason I used it is because detecting stationary objects should be the basics of any self driving vehicle.

thdrdt··on Photoreal Roman Emperor Project
Is it a coincidence George Clooney's face looks the same as a lot of those renders?

Now I wonder if this has to do with the learning set or that those face types are very common.

thdrdt··on First complete dinosaur skeleton ever found has finally been studied in detail
The youngest dinosaur fossil found is estimated to be 65 million years old.

The oldest DNA sample is estimated to be 800,000 years old.

So we simply don't have DNA from a dinosaur.

thdrdt··on Lithium ranked the highest performance web application platform
Wow, the difference between .Net core and .Net!
thdrdt··on American Academy of Sleep Medicine calls for elimination of daylight saving time
"Clocks adjust gradually each day to keep sunrise near 6am"

While your idea might be very good, this is the reason why it won't be used. Nobody is going to be happy to adjust their analog clock every day.

thdrdt··on Apple Terminates Epic Games' Developer Account
I think your point are all valid.

The real question is: Can Apple prove that they are the only one that can provide a store that will keep their customers safe? Because that's what this is about. Epic wants a different store, Apple will argue that they are the only safe store for iOS.

thdrdt··on Who needs a case? The 3D Printed Mil-Plastic is here
Yes, the quality of the prints stood out for me and I also wanted to know on which printer this was done.

The author made a casing for a Prusa MK3/MK3S. So I assume this was used.

thdrdt··on Lego IKEA Bygglek – First Look
"Lego now is not what it used to be."

Of course not. If LEGO did not change they would be out of business right now.

Your comment is about nostalgia.

You can still buy the basic LEGO blocks. So why would you advice someone to use Meccano or Roblox? You can even buy LEGO Architecture Studio (set 21050) exactly for the reason you call 'non-directed play'. And all those blocks are still compatible with the 1970's blocks.

So in a way LEGO did not change at all.

thdrdt··on Lego IKEA Bygglek – First Look
After you learned about linear algebra you can use a LEGO scrumboard in the office as a lot of companies are already using them ;)

Could a country (or a continent) in theory remove satellites hanging above their area? What if countries decide to extend the airspace to the aerospace?
thdrdt··on Kindle collects a surprisingly large amount of data
"you visit someone else’s server, and therefore they get data about your visit"

I don't think the average person knows this. A lot of people even have no clue about internet. So there is no consent most of the time. And we, the developers, just let the logs running.

"with kindle, you’re using your own device and there’s no expectation that amazon will be snooping"

Well I would absolutely have this expectation. I expect a device that is connected to the internet snooping on me. Then there is the Amazon brand. I absolutely don't trust them so I expect them to snoop in me.

But to be clear: I absolutely hate that my privacy is gone. I use all kinds of blockers to disable tracking and I also agree with jacquesm snooping is wrong. But I still think his point is too black and white and therefore unfair.

thdrdt··on Kindle collects a surprisingly large amount of data
I think your comment is unfair.

Every webserver logs the IP address and the URL visited. Do you think most people know this? Do deverlopers push against this?

thdrdt··on The robotics revolution is here, and it's changing how we live
Did you already upgrade it so it screams when it hits a wall to make it more 'human'?

thdrdt··on Apple takes Prepear logo trademark fight to Canada
I think the fight is about the black and white version shown here: https://cdn.iphoneincanada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/app...

But even then I can't imagine Apple is serious about this. Completely different business, style, form and brand names.

It is almost an insult to customers that could mistakenly take the pear logo for an Apple product.

thdrdt··on Fallen Boulder Reveals 313M-Year-Old Fossil Footprints at Grand Canyon
Can someone explain how these tracks were preserved on a sand dune?

As far as I know a sand dune moves constantly. I can't imagine tracks would last a day.

Looking at the tracks it looks more like they were made in mud and later covered by sand dunes?

thdrdt··on Apple apologizes to WordPress, won’t force the free app to add purchases
I think it is also good to keep in mind you won't get customers from app stores.

You need to get in contact with your customers in another way and then let them know where they can download your app.

thdrdt··on Lightroom app update wipes users' photos and presets, Adobe says not recoverable
Depending on what you need Blender can be a replacement for After Effects. Blender can also replace Premiere so then you will have one workflow in the same program.

InspirationTuts has a nice comparison of Blender, After FX and Nuke which you might find interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3jArcnGr3E

As a replacement for InDesign I used Scribus a lot. It has some unpolished edges but gets the job done. It includes industry standard PDF exports.

thdrdt··on Lightroom app update wipes users' photos and presets, Adobe says not recoverable
Inkscape is great but not if you are working a lot in CMYK.
thdrdt··on Big Bounce Simulations Challenge the Big Bang
The Bible even combines the two:

God exists outside time and space (is infinite) and created the universe by calling a potential into form.

Which of course still has the issue of infinity: where did God come from? And even: what does it mean to not be limited by time and space.

thdrdt··on Open Problems in Robotics
Thinking about car painting robots it's clearly about cost.

You can program a car painting robot in some hours. This will be way cheaper than a robot that is aware of the car and knows how it should move to perform the best paint job.

Another example is your washing machine. It would be nice to have a washing robot that would sort your clothes and wash them. But it is way cheaper to sort clothes yourself. So a cloth sorting problem might be an open problem but is indeed a nice-to-have.

thdrdt··on Pathological Lying: Theoretical and Empirical Support for a Diagnostic Entity
"The study found the pathological liars were more likely to experience distress and impaired functioning, especially in social relationships."

I am quite interested in the behavior of Trump. As far as we know he tells a lot of lies but it seems the above quote does not apply to him.

Could it be that distress and impaired functioning only apply to people who are able to experience negative consequences of their lies?

Meaning two things:

* There are negative consequences, so they experience them.

* They see the consequences as negative.

thdrdt··on WebAssembly without the browser
I wish things like this could be used to break free from mobile app stores.

Download a virtual machine via the app store and then run any app written in any languages and compiled only once.

Almost like JAVA..

thdrdt··on Not everyone needs 8 hours of sleep: new research
Well recent studies show that software like flux only does a little and maybe even nothing to help you sleep better.

The problem is that we keep our brains active late at night and that's the reason why it is hard to get to sleep.

For me alcohol is the one that messes with my sleep. The lack of deep sleep makes me feel tired the next day(s).

Edit: an article about recent studies: https://time.com/5752454/blue-light-sleep/

thdrdt··on Web by Google (TM)
Don't underestimate how Google is becomming the storefront of all retail on internet.

Google can now dictate which webshop is shown first in search results on a product level.

I know retailers are sick of this. They need Google to be found on the web but they don't like how Google is destroying retail.
