thatusertwo··on Albert Camus: A reconstructed conversation
Exile and the Kingdom is also great.
thatusertwo··on “Children of Men”'s vision of the future is now disturbingly familiar
Agreed.
thatusertwo··on Why won't biologists say that animals might be conscious?
I sometimes wonder if other humans have an inner life like me, it's very tempting for me to project my inner world onto other humans.
thatusertwo··on How I Could Steal Money from Instagram, Google and Microsoft
A friend runs some SIP networks, he said sometimes when hackers get access to a line they make calls to premium numbers in North Korea and other places. They can run up a 5000$ bills pretty quickly.
thatusertwo··on My First 10 Minutes on a Server
I have a VPS, when I first got it, it had an additional user setup for some unknown reason. I didn't know it was there until my server was hacked by a bot. I'd suggest adding one step of checking the /home directory or other places to make sure no 'unknown' accounts have been set up.
thatusertwo··on Is the Era of Free Streaming Music Coming to an End?
I'm in my thirties, when I was younger I was certainly more willing to put in the effort to find the music I wanted for free. At the time it seemed much easier to find, for me. Now I pay 10 month for spotify and my effort is much less, but so is my interest.
thatusertwo··on Facebook sued for storing biometric data mined from photographs
I doubt that awareness will make any different, even when people are told about the issues with using facebook / instagram they keep on using it.

People won't change until they get a serious wakeup call, but even then they will mostly not do anything.

thatusertwo··on Hover – small drone camera that hovers
I generally dislike new/modern consumer tech, but this looks pretty cool.
thatusertwo··on When Accessibility Gets Labeled Wasteful
We support a 2-5% tax so people can use credit cards to pay for stuff.
thatusertwo··on Eating chocolate is associated with improved brain function
Some of the characters who are suppose to be super smart in 'Death Note' are always eating sweets / chocolate.
thatusertwo··on Asia Struggles for a Solution to Its ‘Missing Women’ Problem
Silicon Valley is a self-selecting imbalance whereas China is not.
thatusertwo··on The Myth of Welfare’s Corrupting Influence on the Poor
Here in Ontario, Canada, whenever the teacher go on strike everyone else gets up in arms, the reality is that the teachers are one of the few areas of employment that still have good wages and benefits. Instead of saying we need to bring everyone down to the lowest level we should be asking for everyone to be pulled up to the level of teachers.

Note: Unlike other places, teaching is a great job in Ontario.

thatusertwo··on Gene patents probably dead worldwide following Australian court decision
Though the logics are similar, the human effort is more in the developing of the tools to sequence DNA, the DNA itself has always existed. With software, the problem might always have existed but a solution needs to be developed independently.
thatusertwo··on A Linux botnet is launching crippling DDoS attacks in excess of 150Gbps
I don't think it's totally random, when my server got taken over I found a list of ip addresses that the script was in turn trying to bruteforce. Someone made that list on purpose, though I don't know why or where the ip's came from.
thatusertwo··on A Linux botnet is launching crippling DDoS attacks in excess of 150Gbps
My VPS had a default username/password called testuser, I never actually noticed it existed till my server got taken over by some chinese bruteforce attack. Every time I rebuilt the server that user account was created, apparently it is part of the image used by my ISP.

My point is that many people probably have their servers taken over in a similar way without even realizing it.

thatusertwo··on DNA from Neandertal relative may shake up human family tree
It's funny that we humans think we know things about the ancient past, everything is always a guess with data that we have no concept of how incomplete it is.
thatusertwo··on FuckAdBlock
I've always got Ghostery running on my computer, I use it to block everything, still see ads sometimes but it certainly enhances my web experience.
thatusertwo··on Entrepreneurs don’t have a gene for risk – they come from families with money
I'd figure the message is 'if you are poor your entrepreneurial journey will be more difficult.'

Working a job and starting a business is most likely more difficult than only starting a business.

thatusertwo··on 8km2 massive pyramid over Tokyo Bay in Japan
That makes me think of Tokyo-3 from Neon Genesis Evangelion.
thatusertwo··on How Literary Fame Happens
But I think fame is having a base talent, then lucky and chance.
thatusertwo··on How Literary Fame Happens
This article doesn't really explain how fame happens.
thatusertwo··on Uber Makes Its Pain New Yorkers’ Problem
I'm very skeptical of Uber, but I don't think limiting the number of cars is any type of solution.
thatusertwo··on Learn to read Korean in 15 minutes
I lived in Korea for awhile, I still seem to remember the sounds of the letters, this was a good refresher.
thatusertwo··on Ask HN: Do you struggle to sleep after coding all day?
I usually go for a walk after work, it helps get my mind out of the computer.
thatusertwo··on The Value of Water on the West Coast
Water should be a public resource that is controlled. When it comes to corporations making profits off of a resource they pay almost nothing for, this is a travesty to the public good. I pay local taxes to support water purification, but I don't profit for it - I shouldn't be subsidising profitable businesses.
thatusertwo··on Homejoy says goodbye
Agreed, but that doesn't discredit all evolved regulations.
thatusertwo··on Homejoy says goodbye
Regulations exist for a reason, some maybe old or irrelevant but they all evolved in response to the industries they regulate.
thatusertwo··on Why China’s stock market bubble was always bound to burst
Any bubble will eventually pop, it's inevitable.
thatusertwo··on Ask HN: Need Advice Losing Focus and Motivation
Life is a series of cycles, there are ups and downs. Its normal to feel down and uninterested in your work at times, just as it's normal to be excited at other times.

If you find that you are disengaging more than anything else, then maybe you need to find a new job where you could have more passion, being excited about what you do could certainly help.

thatusertwo··on Ask HN: Digital nomad taxes – which country to pay in?
My step mother renounced her american citizenship because she has lived (permanent residence) and worked (clients and income) in Canada for most of her life and still had to worry about American Taxes (maybe not pay but file).
