thatoneguy··on Ask HN: Fable hacked my piano, can I release the results?
TIL there are player pianos that don't require pedaling and paper rolls like mine does
thatoneguy··on The last Romans are still around
"American" is a poor demonym because "America" is both North and South America. USian would be a better fit and "Native USian" would naturally include all indigenous and non-indigenous people in the US.
thatoneguy··on Qwen3.7-Max Ran for 35 Hours on Unknown Hardware and Achieved a 10× Speedup
Yeah, I remember. I still have Usenet postings about the genetic algorims conference back in the '90s and some magazine clippings about researcher from the University of Sussex where I first learned about genetic algorithms back in high school.
thatoneguy··on Rob Pike goes nuclear over GenAI
Yeah, I remember it being a fourth option alongside the others but I quit just before Google lost its serifs and its soul
thatoneguy··on Aldous Huxley predicts Adderall and champions alternative therapies
Methamphetamine was invented in Germany in 1937 and the German military at the time was very quick to adopt its use.
thatoneguy··on SpaceX's giant Starship Mars rocket nails critical 10th test flight
How does that matter? It's doing a thing already done nearly 70 years ago but at its own pace.

I bet it will get to the moon cheaper, too, and the Muskonauts will use less expensive lenses than Hasselblads to take photos.

thatoneguy··on Bluesky now platform of choice for science community
Reality has an anti-Elon bias
thatoneguy··on Bluesky now platform of choice for science community
You forgot to add "yet" unless you can predict the future will 100% accuracy. Only once it's sold to someone else can you really say he didn't do it.

The data's longevity was probably helped by being a potent source of hate to power Musk's AI

thatoneguy··on Ban me at the IP level if you don't like me
Is it fair game to just return fire and sink the crawlers? A few thousand connections via a few dozen residential proxies might do it.
thatoneguy··on Cellular Starlink expands to support IoT devices
It doesn't take a lot of juice to send signals straight up. Iridium has been using transceivers to do similar IoT things for decades and my old Inmarsat satphone used a fraction of a watt to get my voice up to geosynchronous orbit just so someone standing next to me on an outdoor landing could hear a message from space.
thatoneguy··on Hiding secret codes in light protects against fake videos
Film worked for a long time (and still works) despite the availabilty of film printers.
thatoneguy··on Japanese scientists develop artificial blood compatible with all blood types
Amazing! Literally the premise of the HBO show _True Blood_ from the 2000s. Japanese scientists invent artificial blood which allows vampires to "come out of the coffin".

OK, I guess we'll wait and see about the vampires. But the blood substitute and Japanese scientists thing was spot-on, at least.

thatoneguy··on AI makes the humanities more important, but also weirder
In Soviet Union, university education free but came at cost of living in Soviet Union

- Yakov Smirnoff, probably

thatoneguy··on The serotonin theory of depression: a systematic review of the evidence (2022)
My-not-much-better-than-placebo sertraline sure has been working its placebo-like magic for 30 years next year.

How long are these double-blind studies? Surely they're not years long to show that the placebo effect is maintained over a decade or something.

thatoneguy··on Leica Just Recorded the Highest Revenue in Its Entire 100-Year History
I've owned a Leica Q2 and Q3 and the former was what finally got me to ditch my phone's camera and get back into photography. Leica's color science is some of the best out there, even if their technology stance is a bit like Apple's in that they're not the first to do anything but often the first to do it right.

That said, I outgrew the Q3, sold it for pretty much what I'd paid for it and bought two Sony cameras and some lenses. I got tired of "zooming with my feet" and the Sony 70-200mm GM II shoots like it's from the future.

thatoneguy··on The AI reporter that took my old job just got fired
I don't get them either since the hosts are typically "regular people" talking about often complicated subjects that they are by no means domain experts in.

I find the format of "Dumdum Host A read some articles about something last night and Dumdum Host B asks questions about it" especially grating, unless it's purely opinion-driven and then I still probably won't care unless I read about the hosts and find out they are probably people with opinions worth listening to.

I'd rather read a book or be with my own thoughts without having them be even more crowded by some randos telling me stuff they think they know

thatoneguy··on OpenAI Threatening to Ban Users for Asking Strawberry About Its Reasoning
Right? How can a non-profit decide it's suddenly a for-profit. Aren't there rules about having to give assets to other non-profits in the event the non-profit is dissolved? Or can any startup just start as a non-profit and then decide it's a for-profit startup later?
thatoneguy··on Study shows 'alarming' level of trust in AI for life and death decisions
I just had to sign a new version of my doctor's office consent form an hour ago letting me know that generative AI would be making notes.

God help us all.

thatoneguy··on Scientists make DNA discovery that could help find pancreatic cancer cure
Yes, it's much more rare and completely curable simply by cutting the bad part off. But Jobs chose a diet of fruit juice and hubris (mostly hubris) to try and fix it and he died because of it.
thatoneguy··on Gene-silencing tool shows promise as a future therapy against prion diseases
Both the communicable and noncommunicable prion diseases still require a particular protein (and typically protein isoform since some folks are resistant to vCJD) to be present so I think this would work on both forms. That said, someone doesn’t normally now they have a prion disease until it’s probably too late to do anything about it.
thatoneguy··on How to be a Norwegian parent: let your kids roam free
This reads a lot like my childhood of the '80s and early '90s in the US with zero supervision due to having a single mom.

Total survivorship bias, however, as plenty of bad things happened to my fellow kids that I was lucky enough to escape. And even though I made it through, it doesn't mean I don't have at least one story where I was chased around a big empty field by another kid wielding a rusty machete.

And it's not all pickled herring and aquavit in Norway, as well. A story like this would surprise a lot of people, even in the US:

thatoneguy··on Supreme Court rules ex-presidents have immunity for official acts
No, because you're not _in charge of_ the executive branch.
thatoneguy··on Human neuroscience mustn't forget its human dimension
An imagination that seems very reasonable to commenter but wildly off-base to everyone else.

I'd personally bet more on a resurgence of typewriters and film in the next decade or two over deeper integration with the increasingly contrived electronic world.

thatoneguy··on Crossing the impossible FFI boundary, and my gradual descent into madness
For anyone else, OP is not referring to the original FFI that leads to madness (and worse):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatal_insomnia

thatoneguy··on Mars rover mission will use pioneering nuclear power source
While this wasn't available in 1985, if it's a pile of parts that add up to, say, Addams Family Pinball, then that's the going rate for at least 1.5 grams of weapons-grade plutonium from the DoE last I checked (NRC and possible state fees not included).
thatoneguy··on Citi Missed a Fat Finger
Wait I thought blockchain was going to save us?
thatoneguy··on Statement from Scarlett Johansson on the OpenAI "Sky" voice
At least in past court cases I’m familiar, you can’t use an impersonator and get people to think it’s the real thing.

It’s not like Tom Waits ever wanted to hock chips

thatoneguy··on AI Has Made Google Search So Bad People Are Moving to TikTok and Reddit
Yup, just like Boeing ditched the leadership steeped in engineering for leadership steeped in Excel.
thatoneguy··on The Real-World Locations of 14 Sci-Fi Dystopias (2014)
I went through IVF and I can't make babies that have my particular mutation in them (even though it's not apparently disease causing and unknown to science) unless I sign a shit ton of paperwork.

So, we have to go with the Gattaca-y genomincally perfect embryos. Or conceive in the back of a car or something.

thatoneguy··on Microsoft strikes deal with Mistral in push beyond OpenAI
Yeah, but this is different because it's largely just money -> more GPUs -> more people looking at the problem -> better results. You can't stumble upon an 8K TV overnight but you can luck upon the right gold mining claim and you can luck upon some new training algorithm that changes the game immediately.
