thasmin··on Wp-SQLite: WordPress running on an SQLite database
Almost all of the relevant code is in wp-content/db.php. It's using Wordpress's hook that lets you use custom code to connect to the database. The code is rewriting MySQL flavored SQL into SQLite flavored SQL which is impressive but potentially flaky. I'd want to see how well it handles SQL from popular plugins before I'd start building a website using this.
thasmin··on Why companies move off Heroku (besides the cost)
I recently deployed a web app on render.com and it looks it fits the description. I just told it to set up a PostgreSQL database, pointed it at my git repo and told it how to build/run the static site, web server, and cron job. It was pretty simple, it's got great features like logs, a console, and monitoring. The price is reasonable too.
thasmin··on Postgres wire compatible SQLite proxy
Do you think this technique can be adapter for integration testing? So you wouldn't need a running PostgreSQL server to run tests that connect to a PostgreSQL database, or maybe it would make tests easier to run in parallel by using different SQLite files.

thasmin··on Ask HN: How do you get started as independent consultant or contractor
I've been an independent software developer for the past 3 or 4 years and I took a path that can be done by good software developer who is good at talking to clients. Talent agencies like Toptal and A.team are great to get started since you don't need to find customers. You can make $150 or more per hour which makes for a pretty comfortable living. Feel free to email me at dan@axelby.com if you'd like more specific advice or just to chat.
thasmin··on Ask HN: How do you start contracting?
I've had a lot of success switching to freelancing by using Toptal and ATeam. You can go full time right away and you don't need to find clients. Feel free to email me at dan@axelby.com if you'd like to chat.
thasmin··on Company town
They couldn't leave because they had no money to pay for anything outside the company town.
thasmin··on Pingendo – Free, simple app for Bootstrap prototyping
What's the name of the open source version? It sounds interesting.
thasmin··on BNSF Railyway Co. helped lead fight to delay train safety technology
Positive Train Control is the train safety technology at issue here. It isn't ready. The "attempt at crippling the economy" is to shut down instead of operating in violation of the regulation.

The railroad companies claim to have spent billions on implementation but it's not available yet. As the article says, they're not allowed to collaborate or share implementation costs because of trust regulations. Also keep in mind the scale of the deployment. There's hundreds of thousands of cars on the track today, and putting something on each car isn't something that takes an afternoon.

The government can't make it happen by creating a regulation and a deadline.

edit: Fixed definition of PTC.

thasmin··on Show HN: Moltin – eCommerce Back End as a Service

thasmin··on Use ReactJS to Build Native Apps
I would love to see React added to mobile app frameworks like Apache Cordova.
thasmin··on Systemd redux: The end of Linux
People who aren't extremely familiar with how the Linux init system works and whose job doesn't include keeping the servers stable don't see why the neckbeards are up in arms about systemd, but there's good reason. Many peoples' jobs depends on making sure the servers are working, and knowing how the servers work is a big part of their job (and sanity). In its current incarnation, systemd changes the fundamentals of how servers work without much increase in features - large risk and little reward.

thasmin··on What It's Like to Fail
I think it can be easily argues that all marriages are made with imperfect information. Not only do people not know their spouse, but they also don't know themselves. Then consider how people change over their lifetime and I wonder how the divorce rate is so low.

When you get married, you aren't signing up to be a caretaker to a mentally unstable spouse. If your spouse is harming your children, it's your responsibility to get your children out of that situation however possible. There are thousands of legitimate situations that you'd agree are worthy of divorce.

There's a lot not said in this article. It's completely possible that he and his wife weren't well suited for each other to begin with. Roseanne was on the air for nine seasons. That's a lot of time to build resentment and hatred, if that's what was happening. Maybe the two years where he stayed at home let them figure out just how much they didn't care for each other. There are lots of legit possibilities.

It's not as simple as not living up to your commitment.

thasmin··on The Best Hope for France’s Young? Get Out
U.N. representation is a really good point, especially with UK and France both having veto power. It will happen when it's beneficial for the countries to be consolidated as one body because they'd represent more economic and political power. Looking forward, I'd guess that this wouldn't happen until India and China and other currently developing nations have bigger economies per capita than France and Germany.
thasmin··on The Best Hope for France’s Young? Get Out
It's interesting to see the EU take form. With the recent finance reforms and articles like this, it looks to me like the EU is becoming more and more like the US with the countries taking the role of states. Moving between US states for the purpose of employment is extremely common. The EU countries have more border autonomy and language barriers that prevent people from moving between them, but it seems similar to the formation of the US and the subsequent 200 years of consolidating power at the federal level. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens in the next 20 years.
thasmin··on Foxconn to hire 3,000 to support Firefox OS and software development
The biggest challenge will be for the HR team who needs to find 3,000 productive new employees. They're not hiring unskilled labor here. When you're hiring that many people, you need to lower your standards and you're going to wind up hiring people who will be a drain on productivity.

thasmin··on My Father's "Eviscerated" work - Son of J.R.R. Tolkien finally speaks out
It's technically legit. Here's one way they could do it. The movie studio makes no money on the movie. The studio sells the movie to the distribution company for a fixed amount. Then the distribution company made $300 million on it, but that's not part of the contract.
thasmin··on RubyFlux: a Ruby to Java compiler
Mirah is a very similar project. It's a language that's very similar to Ruby that compiles directly onto the JVM with no runtime. It's also by Charles Nutter.
thasmin··on A Big Misunderstanding
This article was written in 2001. It wasn't until 2005 and the iTunes Music Store that Apple growth began to explode. The iPhone was Apple's first product the can be supported at a store that was a smash hit and that was release in 2007. It's easy to say that an article written in 2001 was inaccurate, but it's hard to say that the analysis was wrong.

thasmin··on The Git Revolution Is Here
