> I actually do real political work

I’m not even sure why but this sentiment rubs me the wrong way.

Perhaps it’s that what’s resonated most to me about democracy is the premise that it is all “for the people, of the people, by the people.”

There’s something exclusive about that statement.

thakoppno··on Old Stockholm Telephone Tower
There are more telecommunication lines now than ever. We’ve just gotten really good at organizing them?
thakoppno··on I just want an 80×25 console, but that's no longer possible
80 x 24 is the original teletype size.

Personal preference are tautological.

thakoppno··on U.S. added 911k fewer jobs in year through March than reported earlier
The report covers the time period between April 2024 and March 2025.

It seems illogical to me to put the blame entirely on one administration.

We’re retiring something like this at work. The devices were manufactured between 2009-2017. They will continue to operate in non-smart mode until some other part of the device breaks. We’ve notified customers and no one seems particularly upset. To a large degree it seems like the fleet’s obsolete and we could’ve pulled the plug a couple years ago. There’s probably not a good answer in a general sense. It really depends on a host of things.
thakoppno··on The time picker on the iPhone's alarm app isn't circular, it's just a long list
Anyone done the tedious work of figuring out the list length?

Just wondering how they determined the length was enough? Was it constrained by a datatype or just an assumption on user behavior?

I think both conjectures are likely true.

I’ve wondered if there was any interaction between them but cannot find any evidence.

In college I had the opportunity to ask the CEO how the company intended to compete with online retailers and he responded dispassionately, “with loyalty cards.”
thakoppno··on Tunarr: Create and configure live TV channels from media on your servers
That’s fun. I suppose flipping up channels is far more common than down, but presumably one direction would be faster with this solution.
thakoppno··on Tunarr: Create and configure live TV channels from media on your servers
> fond memories of cycling through channels as a child

One thing that’s missing is the low-latency old analog systems had changing channels. Has anyone figured out a way to achieve this in the digital era?

> Google revealed to TechCrunch that a second Google employee had also been caught violating user privacy and was also dismissed. Google didn't reveal any details about what or when this occurred, other than to say the other case didn't involve minors.

I agree largely that the efforts have been successful but there’s more than one incident. I’ll even speculate wildly without any evidence that there have been more than two.

> I wouldn’t be surprised if someone has already made a deal with Spectrum or XFinity to use those open wifi networks that are open to customers via their account signin.

I’m skeptical an arrangement like this could work. The authentication mechanism would be interesting enough to attract security researchers and likely open anonymous Internet access that may undermine any potential benefit gained from viewer data. I could be wrong but I hope not.

thakoppno··on My TV started playing a video in full screen by itself. What happened?
Sony and Samsung were the two TV manufacturers that first introduced this technology of automatic content recognition to my knowledge.

> In the case of one 15-year-old boy Barksdale met through a technology group in Seattle, Washington, he allegedly tapped into the boy's Google Voice call logs after the boy refused to tell him the name of his new girlfriend. Barksdale then reportedly taunted the boy with threats to call the girl.

This doesn’t quite refute your assertion of no leaks of searches but it is just as egregious. You are right about incentives too.

thakoppno··on Basketball has evolved into a game of calculated decision-making
> Wilt Chamberlain averaged more than 48 minutes a game during the 1961-62 NBA season, where he played an average of 48.5 minutes per game; this is considered one of the most remarkable feats in NBA history.
thakoppno··on Basketball has evolved into a game of calculated decision-making
To clarify, award the offense a point when fouled shooting a 2-point shot and two points if shooting a 3.

There’s still a free-throw left to earn the old fashioned way.

Mostly the thinking is this encourages post-play since bigs are usually worse free-throw shooters. Also, it should shorten game length which is another recent audience concern.

thakoppno··on Basketball has evolved into a game of calculated decision-making
My proposal to fix this is to automatically award a point for all non-reboundable free throws.
