th3w3bmast3r··on Ship incrementally or die trying: Lessons from failed rewrites
I spent months trying to do a "perfect" Angular to React migration. Failed. Did the same with our V2. Failed again. The mental burden of carrying unshipped code for months is crushing for small teams. Finally learned to just ship every 2 weeks no matter what. Users actually appreciated seeing progress, bugs were easier to fix, and my stress went way down.
th3w3bmast3r··on Cosmos Keyboard: Scan your hand, build a keyboard
This is fucking lit! I can only imagine the amount of work went into building something like this. Also, nice domain name :)
th3w3bmast3r··on Let Them Fail or the Art of Delegating
Just wanted to share my experience learning to delegate properly instead of doing their job for them.
th3w3bmast3r··on Next.js, Just Why?
Excellent write up man! These things frustrates me and I am hesitant to use Next.js for more dynamic apps.
th3w3bmast3r··on Stop Treating Everything as a Bug
As a founder-coder, I had the bad habit of treating every little concern and user complaints as a bug. This ended up leading to a lack of prioritization. In this article, I am going over how I classify bugs now so that I can ship meaningful features.
th3w3bmast3r··on Tell Me Why: Unveiling the Reasons Behind Software Development Choices
I go over my thoughts on why it's important to explain your reasoning to your customers.
th3w3bmast3r··on Why you can’t pay us to add custom modules
> While I can push back, I can’t always outright say no, unfortunately.

That sounds rough! It's extremely hard to outright say no when you are not the decision maker.

> Sometimes they go above my head

I am all too familiar with it from my days working in corporate environment. It's frustrating.

> He is the hero of the day, but maintenance has become a nightmare

100% with you there! It's like taking a loan to pay back your loan. Eventually, it's going to catch up.

Kudos to you for putting up a fight and making things to work. It's easy to follow the norm but hard to cut against the grain. Cheers to the rebel in you!

th3w3bmast3r··on A Minimal Blog Design for Maximal Reading Pleasure
I designed my blog to enhance the reading experience and this article goes through on how I went about designing it. If you have feedback on what I can do to make it better, it would be much appreciated.
th3w3bmast3r··on Client-side filtering of private data is a bad idea
^ This and also taking a shortcut is easier. For teams that are not full-stack, doing it client-side means you don't have to bother the backend team for more APIs or wait for them to implement it fo you.
th3w3bmast3r··on CockroachDB license change
I am with you! I stop looking when it says contact us for pricing.
th3w3bmast3r··on CockroachDB license change
Yup - another "Contact Us" for pricing. God forbid if your business grows more than 10 Million ARR and now you owe them undisclosed amount of money.
th3w3bmast3r··on GitHub was down
This is my first time seeing the angry unicorn! Hopefully it’ll be gone soon :(
th3w3bmast3r··on Show HN: If YouTube had actual channels
This is really slick!
th3w3bmast3r··on US Government wants to make it easier for you to click the 'unsubscribe' button
Same - I've given up unsubscribing and sending it straight to spam. Especially if I never signed up for it in the first place.

If I did sign up for it, I do the polite thing and unsubscribe if they make it easy.

But yeah - spam is getting aggravating. I am getting spam text messages now....

th3w3bmast3r··on Show HN: I made a Pomodoro on macOS that is linked to your favorite playlists.
App looks really nice! Just installed it. I never thought of pairing up music with Pomodoro app before.

Also love your pricing model~ That's very thoughtful of you.

UI feels nice and simple. Also a little feedback. Once the features are unlocked, the "Unlock All Features" should probably change to something like "You are a Pro User". I was trying to "Restore" purchases a few times before I realized the Pro Features have already been unlocked.

Loving the app so far. Will try it on Monday when I work!

th3w3bmast3r··on X ( Twitter) is using Bun in production
Wow - it's great to see Bun is getting serious adoption. It's cool to see it being used in production by a tech giant.
th3w3bmast3r··on How is everyone managing user authentication for their platform?
We use authentication provided by Laravel Passport. Has been working great for us.
th3w3bmast3r··on Ask HN: Best AI Code Assistant?
I tried JetBrains AI and Github Copilot and ended up just removing them altogether.

The autocomplete when it works is wonderful but more often than not, I need to delete and type it again. Most of the time I know what I want to type and not using AI saved me the time it took me delete and try again.

I did like the chat window but it wasn't enough for me to keep it. Maybe you can't teach this old dog new tricks :(

th3w3bmast3r··on Software I Pay For
> Why? Because for some software, I think it’s worth it. Take 1password, for example. To me, it’s a piece of software that just works across multiple devices and takes the hassle out of managing passwords.

I am with you. I pay for software because it just works and solves a problem and I can justify the cost.

1password iCloud 200GB Jetbrains Full Suite

I've been using these for more than 10 years. From the time they were pay per version (excluding iCloud of course) till they become subscription. They just make my problem go away so I just pay for it.

I am sure I can string together open source and free version but I just don't have the time and energy to wire them together and maintain them.

I also know Apple is offering their own "cross" platform password manager but at this point, I don't feel like moving off 1pass.

th3w3bmast3r··on Payment Request browser API is a faster more secure version of form payments
I didn't know that. Thank you for letting me know.
th3w3bmast3r··on Show HN: Orbit – A CSS radial UI composer framework
Very cool! Do you have a lot of design experience? The demo and the page was very artistically put together.

th3w3bmast3r··on Show HN: Orbit – A CSS radial UI composer framework
It looks really really cool. I'm really loving the "An abstract orbital map" example.

I am curious to know, what prompted you to make this framework?

th3w3bmast3r··on Disney Eliminating Disney+ Password Sharing Starting in September

th3w3bmast3r··on Apple to Address '0.0.0.0' Security Vulnerability in Safari 18

th3w3bmast3r··on Ask HN: Free open source alternative to IntelliJ IDEA and CLion?
It depends on what you are trying to do. Are you trying to look at the code and/or modify it to fit your needs? Are you simply looking for a free IDE?

Here is what I used 10 years ago when I was still doing Java.

Open Source IDE --------------- Netbeans IDE -> Loved the UI Eclipse -> My team at Amazon used this and it was great

Free to Use (Closed-Source) --------------------------- IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition

Open Source Editor ------------------ Visual Studio Code - If you don't care about IDE related features and just want an Editor

I don't have any background in C/C++ so I don't have any recommendations.

Hope this helps!

th3w3bmast3r··on My Experience of Keeping up with Angular for 7 Years [video]
Thank you for watching my video! It means a lot to me.

I am happy to hear Angular has been working great for you. Angular is a great framework and I still think there is a place for Angular. Just not in our codebase.

I originally went with Angular for the same reason. Back then React's TypeScript support wasn't great and I didn't want that in my code. I love TypeScript and wanted to keep using that.

Regarding state management, I would say we had same amount of rewrite on both ends. The good news is that we are pretty solid on our state management now for the most part.

We are still a small team, Angular just adds more work for us. When we were onboarding a developer who had zero experience with Angular, they required more guidance and took them much longer to become productive. With React, we've seen developers became more productive significantly faster.
