th0br0··on The Day Google Decided HttpWatch Was ‘Unwanted Software’
For the Android page, however, you could argue that they don't follow their own guide lines.

Click "Other download options". The EULA dialog only appears if the user clicks the link with his left mouse button as it seems to be a purely client-side interception. Should he, however, use right-click->save as or open in new tab he is not presented with the dialogue.

A platform that uses consecutive app ids which are pure integers and which you can actually crash (as in, service returns {error: "INTERNAL_ERROR"} if you provide an app id > INT64_MAX ) isn't really trustworthy from my point of view...

I'd never heard of Common Crawl before but it looks like an awesome project! Keep up the good work!
th0br0··on Ask HN: I just got $100k in AWS credits, how should I use it?
why don't you use the credits to try to create a publicly queryable index of the web in a standardised format? read: open source search engine. as you've got the money, just ignore efficiency.

else... commit part of it to one of the computing @ home proejcts?

Psychology. If you adjust the prices, people will maybe perceive the dishes as being too expensive. However, if you keep the prices low and add a "hidden" (as in people need to calculate themselves before ordering) service charge, as soon as the service charge is accepted in general, you'll be profiting more off it than otherwise.

I wouldn't be too surprised if the increase in scripting language usage and maybe even better debugging support were partially at fault here.

The Richter scale is logarithmic and therefore, a doubling of values is not equivalent to a doubling of force.

th0br0··on What Two Programmers Have Revealed About Seattle Police Officers
Regarding your comment on "excessive force", I'm reminded of [0] and how the reaction to that in the news has mostly been along the lines: well, the police education in the US doesn't really contain much on how to deescalate situations compared to, e.g., Sweden/EU. Given how "glorified" those cops became for deescalating the situation properly, I'm not sure, whether "excessive force" isn't a very serious and real issue far too often and whether it's just being played down because people aren't used to expecting a different behaviour from cops.

th0br0··on EU study recommends OpenBSD
Those 3 I linked above are mostly research projects, all funded as part of FP7 and the EU doesn't seem to do much PR for those themselves.

I'd expect the upcoming (pan)"European Open Data Portal" to receive significantly more PR from the EU.

th0br0··on EU study recommends OpenBSD
Consultants essentially. There's also some IT development going on by actual EU employees, but the projects I listed above are usually won through tenders often submitted as a joint project by multiple companies/organisations (research partners - i.e. universities -, development partners - i.e. big companies - + public partners - often for demo purposes) although the EU also funds some purely research oriented projects of course.
th0br0··on EU study recommends OpenBSD
I primarily know about the projects listed at https://www.fokus.fraunhofer.de/809f10db25eddf3e/projects A personal observation is that, nowadays, gitlab seems to be preferred to github as part of a push to rely more on software developed inside the EU (guess it's an aftermath of the whole NSA story).

PolicyCompass, for example, lives at https://github.com/policycompass

Carneades lives at http://github.com/carneades

MARKOS is up on SF http://markosproject.sourceforge.net/

th0br0··on EU study recommends OpenBSD
In general, the EU is _very_ strong on open source commitments. Almost all projects that I know of and some of which I'm working on funded as part of FP7 (Seventh Framework Programme) will eventually end up open-sourced.

You forgot the select(.creditcard) - see my comment on the gist - as this one does not filter out null'ed creditcards:

  jq -r '.[] | select(.creditcard) | [.name, .creditcard] | @csv' data.json >> $name

th0br0··on The state of Clojure on Android
From a user perspective, I find the statement that "Lean Clojure" works based off these charts a bit daring. Why?

a) Without having access to the numbers, (Skummet) startup is ~5 times as slow as the Java version. That is a noticeable difference. Plus, even Java apps sometimes tend to take a second or more to start up if they're reasonably complex.

b) The "Lean Clojure works" statement is derived from comparing _only_ the startup times. The fact that the task time is around two times Java's for Skummet is a big thing. Ignoring startup time, and without further data/tests, one could argue that Clojure Android apps run twice as slow as Java ones... that's a big no-go given the high amount of sparkly UI features of most modern apps. Or at least a no-go for having a Clojure-only stack?

(Skummet's probably in its early stages and I'd expect improvements but ... from those graph I'd argue 'Lean Clojure' does not work (yet?))

th0br0··on Slack Raises $160M Series E at $2.8B Valuation
What are those significant regards?

While I also like the polished UX, I'd argue that the only real value that slack adds on top of IRC is the UI/X and integrated history - the latter being something that IRC just plain lacks.

To cryptoz (can't reply, probably too deep?): I was going to argue that it would be terrible difficult to build up that smartphone network. But then I saw that you do PressureNet (awesome tool btw!) and, oh well... looks like you've definitely got the network part done already.

OTOH, why not just ping @elonmusk on twitter?

What, precisely, is wrong with SMTP? Your issue is with the implementation, not the protocol. In my opinion, SMTP is as bare-metal as possible (excluding? binary attachments) while still being human readable.
