th0br0··on Handling 1M Requests per Minute with Go
Other than the worker/concurrency mechanism being part of the language, what's the difference to a RabbitMQ-Worker architecture? You might even argue that the lack of persistence (in the given example) is a potential source for data loss.
th0br0··on Are you a Greek company Blocked by capital controls?
I wonder how this is supposed to work, given that zerofund seems to be registered in the US (based off their WHOIS records)
th0br0··on Petition: Step down as CEO of Reddit Inc
The reason that seems quite reasonable to me is this (now deleted, whatever the reason) reply on quora: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CI9iYW7VAAAzzJN.png
th0br0··on Perf for low level Haskell profiling
I wonder how many veteran C programmers (myself not included) would react with "d'oh, of course you should byte-align memory access" here...
th0br0··on How private is your email? Not very
Ah! Guess this is due to me not using the "multiple email tabs" feature of Gmail then. Thanks.
th0br0··on How private is your email? Not very
Do iPhone/US Gmail users really see ads in Gmail on their mobile devices? Not sure whether it's because of our privacy laws here in Germany, but I've only ever seen the (quite general) ads on the webinterface where I've opted out of profiled ads I guess.
th0br0··on SpaceX – Launch Vehicle Failure
YouTube cannot assure that no GEMA-licensed content is played during the live streams. To avoid a battle with GEMA here, they decided to ban it.
th0br0··on Same-Sex Marriage Is a Right, Supreme Court Rules
You argue with the sanctity of marriage. But which modern authority makes it sacred?
th0br0··on [dead]
Nice SFW url rewrites!
th0br0··on Firefox download on SourceForge
Also see http://sourceforge.net/mirror/ I guess. Weird behaviour.
th0br0··on Oculus Rift
I'm guessing you're supposed to associate "Aaah" and "Oh" as in Oh-culus, but I agree: that's a terrible filler for your first product page.
th0br0··on Bitcode (iOS, watchOS)
I'm honestly surprised that noone has commented on the security implications of this, yet. After all, allowing Apple to recompile your "bitcode" essentially means, that the user can in no way validate that the version he's running is the version the developer published. It would be fairly straightforward to perform MITM attacks on apps this way. (And, sure, Android's APKs are faced with quite the same issue - but AFAIK Google doesn't modify your bytecode (yet?))
th0br0··on How Not to Write an API
Nobody is preventing you from forking and trying to get your improvements(?) merged upstream...
th0br0··on Getting a push message on your phone when your laptop battery is running low
Nice idea! But why go all the way with the python venv etc? Just using curl + GCM would seem quite sufficient.

(oh, and: don't you need some app installed either way for receiving the notifications on your phone?

th0br0··on Hunter S. Thompson on finding your purpose
To paraphrase, this is quite what Thompson refers to with regard to the ninth path: make your own way. If you wait out of fear that you might be missing out, you're going with the tide and not finding your own way.
th0br0··on Show HN: Valhalla, an open source routing engine
Whoops, looks like you responded just after I deleted my comment having seen your other. Thanks! Was searching for that link without success. It's awesome that they wrote most in C++ though!

th0br0··on Accident Explorer: Machine learning with traffic accident data
Don't get me wrong, but how does your problem-adapted version of DBSCAN constitue a form of machine learning?
th0br0··on All aboard San Francisco's hipster bus for leather seats, Wi-Fi and iced coffee
The pictures from the promo shoot look like a traffic security nightmare. It looks like many people would be injured by a high velocity vehicle impacting into the bus.
th0br0··on How to learn 30 languages
I was at the meeting here in Berlin and can only say that it was awesome. Such interesting talks and people! For those interested, the talks should be posted online soon at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_8BR59zKgBzeWPxFtmHSwA
th0br0··on Unhappy Birthday
I find it a fun coincidence that the guy's last name, in whose name the domain is registered, is also Hill.
th0br0··on Researchers first to create a single-molecule diode
That's a very weird naming pattern for articles that phys.org seems to follow: XXX does XYZ. Now I'm quite aware that that's the usual "buzzfeed" approach for naming their posts but I'd expect more from a science website.

Seeing "Researchers first to create a single-molecule diode", "Engineer develops real-time listeria biosensor prototype", "Physicists develop efficient method of signal transmission from nanocomponents" et al. I'm wondering what the intended audience for their articles is.

Anyhow, after researching the article at hand I quickly discovered that the text is actually copied in verbatim from the official news release which was titled "One step closer to a single-molecule device". Maybe we could change the URL to that? (Not sure whether there's a better source than the newswise.com one though - it looks quite official )

th0br0··on A Linux proud history – 15 years ago and the Brazilian ATM
Yikes. Another fake-scrolling page that makes you unable to scroll at all with a good adblocker...
th0br0··on Not just another app: Number26 (Berlin) aims to take banking to the next level
What Number26 is doing is essentially: create a simple UI for accessing your bank account. Think of it as wrapping the "traditional" mywirecard service (= prepaid CC service with a terrible UI) in a modern interface with some added functionality similar to what your bank would expose via HBCI (which is usually offered by banks in Germany as part of their online account management product).

They haven't solved how to deposit money: you need to manually wire that from your real bank account into the bank account associated with your "prepaid bank account" for the MasterCard.

All in all, I don't really see the added value over my regular bank's web interface + PayPal (or similar). That's coming from someone who's got access to regular credit cards of course. And I - arguably - don't need real-time access to my transactions if I know that they usually show up on my online CC bill within 3 days max.

th0br0··on The Problem With Single-threaded Shared Mutability
Reading such comments on Rust I'm always wondering: are there any plans to make parallel execution a core feature of Rust? Given the safety information that the compiler generates, it should be relatively straightforward to offload "pure" functions to other processors. (Although AFAIR Rust actually had the notion of pure functions initially but dropped it after some time)
