Did you study electrical engineering? Can you recommend a laymans resource for getting smart on how you did those calcs? For example I’d struggle to figure out the battery size for a given wattage / amp of draw.
texasbigdata··on Ask HN: Best VR headset for remote work?
Oh man I liked those guys. :(

Re: your second paragraph, what does that have to do with OPs ability (regardless of appropriateness to the firm, his career arch, or the story) to perform as a manager. He/she might be great, normal, or terrible. How can you tell apriori from what they wrote?
texasbigdata··on Ask HN: Does anyone care anymore what Google demos in IO?
More ads! Now more indistinguishable than ever!
texasbigdata··on Facebook’s Retirement Plan
How can you tell, or what historical actions of his did you find to be very informative?
texasbigdata··on Ask HN: Why are there so many companies trying to reinvent the terminal (badly)?
I don’t know, what about snowflake (for example). Before they launched you could argue it’s not needed; now, it’s got customers and is publicly traded. Hard to tell.

Do they have a revenue model? I thought it was a non-profit / public benefit company.

Do your roads appear on any government maps? I believe the mapping agency for road is called…shucks I forget. They’re sometimes ahead or behind Google maps.

I think I heard it on the This Week in Startups podcast this week (pre- takeover offer).

Edit: literally first google result for Zuckerberg clown car

texasbigdata··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
To argue against myself, and I can't cite this, Zuckerberg allegedly referred to Twitter as a clown car that drove into a diamond mine.

It's hilarious why people care so much about the price of a financial instrument. Even Bitcoin. Do you care what wheat or copper or kerosene trades at? Why not take him at his word.

Plenty of Americans spend 5 to 10% of their worth on stuff. Who cares what your neighbor paid for his boat....maybe dude just likes to drink Coors light on the lake.

texasbigdata··on Nintendo Switch prevents downgrades by irreparably blowing its own fuses (2020)
Having XOO,OOO to XX,000,000 cars globally on N different firmware packages when your approach involves fast iteration and OTA updates, in an industry where you catch partial flak for any incident regardless of the party at fault ....

Seems reasonable to not allow random downgrading because you didn't like the UI layout.

2 cents opinion.

texasbigdata··on Ask HN: Does anyone else think this 2FA everywhere is getting out of hand?
It's because, unlike email, phones are approximately 1:1 to humans.
texasbigdata··on Ask HN: Recent computer hacking convictions and employability?

It's a weird double ... I wish someone had a nice word for this.

In modern America, with allopathic medicine being the norm, its difficult to obtain some things that are likely safe at a 3 sigma confidence interval. Yet conversely, and reminder we share healthcare costs partially as a society through Medicare and Medicaid, you're free to pour McDonalds into yourself and add $X00k of cost onto the healthcare system, and "infringing on that right" and heaven forbid enacting a tax on sugar products is somehow unacceptable.

I can shorten my life expectancy by 15 years in so many ways. But to buy XYZ drug without a giant multi-day process which on average is positive, and even at ABC confidence level is not negative, nahhhh we don't trust you as a society to do that.

Super frustrating in a borderline libertarian rant.

texasbigdata··on Alphabet's Calico has begun trials on a molecule for neurodegenerative diseases
Very interested in this. So your c-reactive protein, d-dimer (sp?), etc etc showed negative? How did you find the clots? When you say "tiny", in medical terms do you mean mili or micro meters (I think that's right).

You might like the #1 book on Amazon under cardiology currently. Its thesis is cholesterol has nothing to do with heart diseases, its all in the clots. Good detail of the clotting process and relatively understandable.

texasbigdata··on Alphabet's Calico has begun trials on a molecule for neurodegenerative diseases
"Smarter" do you mean neuroregenesis? As I understood it's used post stroke to try to reverse some of the damage.

Wouldn't they technically be casinos and thus regulated?

My experience with pachinko in Japan felt very much like the old strip in Las Vegas emotion and vibe wise.

David Sinclair at Harvard is working on making this molecule safe. Back in the day it was FDA approved it was wildly popular, but the "idiot takes 10x the dosage and cooks their insides" is too much of a risk for a 2020+ general population especially given the extremely slow half time.
texasbigdata··on Portable replacement for a $60k VO2 Max machine
Not to be an idiot but you're implying 90g just to confirm the math.

It’s not an “OR” to me. Black and white is an AND to blocking Twitter.
texasbigdata··on Living on 24 hours a day
Simple things like the color of icons on your phone launcher. Websites themselves that compete with each other. That CNN video you watch on your phone, etc.

But my point isn't scientifically backed.

Would disagree about the HN audience comment. Just the red and green SMS bubbles are SO strident on iOS on Macbook versus black and white on iPhone.

But just my personal opinion.

Super interesting thanks!!!

Black and White really helps. "The algorithm" also plays with the color spectrum to influence our reptilian brain.

On the rare occasion I need to turn my phone to color say once a month (like when buying a pair of shoes and needing to see the color) the hue and intensity of just the regular internet and Instagram is outright overwhelming.

That's anecdotal but in my experience it does work.
