tetris11··on Show HN: Destroy Any Website with Stickman
Oh this is lovely. I started doing something similar, but I was generating the stage based on the DOM and some CSS features, but kept getting weird boundaries (read: the character would float on unseen edges)

I later thought about using an edge-detection algorithm to capture the page as an image (triggered on page events), but never fully implemented it and shelved the project.

I would love to know how you captured the visible edges

tetris11··on Show HN: Reladraw – A diagram language where you decide where to place things
I like it. I have too many issues with Mermaid
tetris11··on Fourier Analysis: Drawing Llamas with Circles
Can't you have another set of circles perpendicular to plane, which encode when the pencil draws, allowing for discontinuous regions?
tetris11··on Back to the future: modules for Guix packages (2022)
I love Guix, I just hate that it requires such an invasive installation for it to work.

Compare it to pixi for example which has all the same features (pixi shell, pixi run, pixi pack, etc.) and requires only a small user-level installation and a folder specific deployment

tetris11··on A succession crisis that tore England apart (2023)
Felicia Hemans's poem He Never Smiled Again is an ode to Henry I's reaction to his son and only male heir perishing in the tragedy

  > The bark that held a prince went down,
  > The sweeping waves roll’d on;
  > And what was England’s glorious crown
  > To him that wept a son?
  > He lived-for life may long be borne
  > Ere sorrow break its chain;-
  > Why comes not death to those who mourn?
  > —He never smiled again!

tetris11··on Ask HN: Can we please limit the AI news flood?
oh absolutely, but if they lose half their audience due to the sloppification of their front page, then they lose both legitimacy as an interesting and impartial platform to promote said AI tech
tetris11··on Ask HN: Can we please limit the AI news flood?
Its important to use these filtered front pages though, so that eventually theres a sizable Referrer traffic chunk coming not from HN's frontpage itself that will signal to the admins that something is up
tetris11··on Coyote v. Acme (1990)
When there's a will, there's a way...
tetris11··on Coyote v. Acme (1990)
Yep, reasonable film to stream. Wouldn't pay theatre money to go see it
tetris11··on I Connected My Withings Body+ to Home Assistant with an ESP32
Very light on details, but did awaken me to the idea that you can setup HW projects like this without soldering. Bluetooth is practically ubiquitous, and ESPhome does offer this up in a palatable way
tetris11··on Nvidia to acquire Hugging Face
There goes the free lunch
tetris11··on Brits would quite like their private messages to stay private
> $5 wrench

Ref for anyone looking: https://xkcd.com/538/

tetris11··on How much of HN is AI?
The issue is the tech and the motives to wield it. Cosy decentralized message boards exist, thankfully outside the realm of the greater public.

The moment that the greater public sees these high trust networks and tries to join them, all the bad actors and their armies of bots will follow and I mourn for the recreation time of any admin who has to suddenly deal with that.

Private walled gardens seem to be the only way forward for now. If you love something, do not share it here

tetris11··on The entire city of San Francisco as a video game
when the local baker jacks up his prices to leach off the richest man in town, everyone else suffers
tetris11··on Anna's Archive Owes $340 Million, Lost Several Domains, but It's Still Online
People can be predisposed towards something, and then have a tipping point brought by periods of great stress

Jason Arday recently committed suicide due to media pressure, and even when the media was told that he was not mentally well and should please back off, they didn't.

The man was accused of plagiarism, and there was no final verdict on if he did. The institutions that hired him clearly had no issues in vetting him. And yet he committed suicide.

There are absolutely horrible people out there right now who's entire careers are shams, and don't even come close to thinking about it. People are built different, and have different triggers

tetris11··on Nokia Design Archive
It's a self-signed cert registered with Harica CA, but the certificate itself does not require the certificate authority to validate it according to Firefox's about:certificate
tetris11··on Mars Bar from 1991 found – and it's 20g bigger than today's
Agreed, but then shrink the price too
tetris11··on Half of Europe's towns and villages have fewer residents than 60 years ago
It's insane to see the UK still growing. Despite all of our problems, it's still a nice place to be
tetris11··on U.S. economy lost 23,000 jobs in July, a sudden reversal
What happened between February and March?
tetris11··on Let's all meet up in the Y2K
"When work felt like home"

Gosh I haven't experienced that in a while. Working remote really does feel like a death sentence sometimes

tetris11··on Zed DeltaDB
I had the great pleasure/misfortune of being forced to work with LaminDB, and I can tell you folks; data provenance isn't going away -- it will be used to train the very AI models snapping at our heels
tetris11··on Zigbee vs. Matter over Thread:Understanding IoT Protocol Performance in Practice
What's to stop Ikea from pushing an OTA and crippling your whole setup 2 years from now?
tetris11··on The Golden Age of British Ice Cream
No one has both the time to avoid every deception set by large industry. We're all experts in our respective fields but can be completely side-jumped by something just adjacent to it, and we can't be experts in all.

Sometimes you just want to buy a tangerine without having to research beforehand which ones aren't absolutely plastered in antibiotics on their peel (read: the majority).

tetris11··on There Will Come Soft Rains (1950) [pdf]

    Eternal rains will come
    We should say goodbye
    And suffer on our own
As all our thoughts were wrong
tetris11··on Tell HN: I hate your fuzzy search
Quotes should be enough to trigger an exact search. How we regressed from this is beyond me
tetris11··on The End of an Era
Given the nose-diving literacy rate history might begin to repeat itself
tetris11··on The computer that helped win World War II
Hogwash. Humans are masters of innovation, and are highly motivated to solve problems. None of these men worked from the ground up, but built on the groundwork laid down by others (Turing especially).

The world was arguably also less complex back then, so there was plenty of low-hanging fruit to snatch in terms of information theory

Don't let the Hideo Kojima's of the world fool you into believing they did everything themselves. It's an effort of many, many who do it for the love of the craft and are content to receive no praise for it

tetris11··on The computer that helped win World War II
Had they not used a reflector pin in the encryption (simplified encrypting/decrypting a message using the same rotor configuration) it would have been far harder to crack, because the pin ensured that no letter could ever encode itself and that greatly reduced the search space
tetris11··on The computer that helped win World War II
The National Museum of Computing (just up the road from Bletchley Park) has a working Colossus
tetris11··on Ask HN: What livestream do you keep open in a tab?
My doorbell camera. It's like sitting on the stoop watching the world go by
