tetris11··on Over 80% of 16 to 24-year-olds would vote to rejoin the EU
Do not reply to the wind-up merchants, they are there to engage and divide
tetris11··on Over 80% of 16 to 24-year-olds would vote to rejoin the EU
I went to George's hospital the other day and saw a punchy flyer talking about the lack of NHS services, with the kicker "Privatise now!"

That's what we're dealing with. Underinvestment only enriches their camp.

tetris11··on Over 80% of 16 to 24-year-olds would vote to rejoin the EU
DPC is pretty routine these days, and a lot of old houses get the treatment before they're flipped (as is the custom of our times)
tetris11··on Facebook is cooked
The Fediverse has seen a rampant increase in bot activity recently (easily squashed by sane moderators), which to me is a signal that "Reddit is Cooked" and the windup merchants have wised up to where their target audience is going
tetris11··on The true story behind the Toronto mystery tunnel (2015)
There really is something to owning a patch of land that no one can tell you not to dig on.

I hope he becomes a landowner some day

tetris11··on Across the US, people are dismantling and destroying Flock surveillance cameras
It also encourages councils to regularly change their road signs for side roads, to catch suddenly new trespassers in real time.

tetris11··on Flashpoint Archive – Over 200k web games and animations preserved
Attak by JohnnyTwoShoes[0,1], is one of the standout games from that era: super-saiyan type battles using an underlying physics/ragdoll engine with fully destructible buildings and terrain.

Half the strategy was digging out an underground bunker to shield yourself from your enemy's 500m vertical drop attacks. It was an incredible feat of programming for the time.

The game unfortunately is in that final tiny percentage of AS3 games with missing features and thus does not work with ruffle yet, I suspect because the game was so cutting edge.

tetris11··on Flashpoint Archive – Over 200k web games and animations preserved
I suspect this is why one of my most favourite games of that era, Attak by JohnnyTwoShoes[0], does not make it past the loading screen

tetris11··on Ring owners are returning their cameras
Reolink Doorbell PoE, deny it access to the cloud if you want from the router, works well over LAN and can periodically FTP recordings anywhere you want on your local network, plus it has some really nice HomeAssistant integrations (last movement, last animal, last person, last doorbell)
tetris11··on Skip the Tips: A game to select "No Tip" but dark patterns try to stop you
Amazon does something like this too, though I'm not sure of the percent. I just know that every time I select to pay in dollars, any change in delivery options will select it back to pay in euros, where the bank is.

I genuinely don't know if this is good or not, but the UIs insistence on reverting back to another currency after my initial selection leads me to believe that my initial selection hits them the hardest the most

tetris11··on A Cosmic Miracle: A Remarkably Luminous Galaxy at z=14.44 Confirmed with JWST
Yup. 2/3rds of my Physics class went straight into banking.

I remember secretly judging them at the time, but as the years wore on I came to realise how wise/scared they actually were..

tetris11··on Roger Ebert Reviews "The Shawshank Redemption" (1999)
They're planning to digitally replace him in a later HD-DVD release with Dave Chapelle.

None of this is true.

tetris11··on Roger Ebert Reviews "The Shawshank Redemption" (1999)
He took it a bit too far with Harry Potter, Spiderman, and Star Wars

tetris11··on Sheldon Brown's Bicycle Technical Info
I'm so glad they went back to the old design.

There was a point a few years back where someone did a site revamp with modern CSS and all that horrible jazz in clear attempts to monetize this incredible resource.

Happy to hear they reverted

tetris11··on Build Your Own Insect Drone
It's only now hit me that Arducam and Arducopter/pilot are the same entity. What fantastic hardware and software (though their linux support for their mission planner raises a few eyebrows)

tetris11··on Yawning has an unexpected influence on the fluid inside your brain
> If an animal is drowsy or bored, it will be less alert than when fully awake and less prepared to spring into action. "Contagious" yawning could be an instinctual signal between group members to stay alert.

> Anecdotal evidence suggests that yawning helps increase a person's alertness.

> Paratroopers have been noted to yawn during the moments before they exit their aircraft.

tetris11··on Simulating Crowds in Hitman (2012) [pdf]
I'm mostly astounded that they got it to work on PS2 hardware in 2006.

Hitman:Blood Money's Mardi Gras level still stands up today

tetris11··on Anki ownership transferred to AnkiHub
The real trick is not realising that its working until you stop using it :-)
tetris11··on Anki ownership transferred to AnkiHub
Same for me. I was doing my PhD in another country and was just overwhelmed and disoriented at the sheer scale of information I suddenly had to remember and digest. Anki was on again/off again for me at first, but once I learned to edit and update the cards and add my own, I really began to understand how to boil concepts down into something I could remember, i.e. I could structure it to my own personal chaotic mode of thinking, and I've flourished with it since then
