tester34··on A framework for grading your performance on programming interview problems
You can definitely graduate from CS and be poor programmer, hell you can even work decade in industry and be poor programmer - also known as "10 * 1 year experience"
tester34··on A framework for grading your performance on programming interview problems
you'd be shocked how much bullshit occurs on universities across the world, even in EU.
tester34··on Senior Developers in Eastern Europe Walk into a Bar
I do agree that it'd be gigantic quality of life improvement

but doing "cool" stuff instead of gluing jsons over https is interesting perspective too

tester34··on Senior Developers in Eastern Europe Walk into a Bar
I'm currently in EE and kinda underpaid

I think there's a decent chance to get 5-7x salary increase...

On the other hand FAANG/CPU companies don't even write rejection email to me; or I'm just used to different response time + my tech stack doesn't really fit them.

hmm, it's the same as e.g "Y2K problem"

>The Year 2000 problem, also known as the Y2K problem, Millennium bug, Y2K bug, Y2K glitch or Y2K error,

>Are you using kkk as a unit prefix for billion? I've never seen that before.

afaik it's pretty common within gaming communities

e.g

1k - 1 000 (of gold)

1kk - 1 000 000 (of gold)

1kkk - 1 000 000 000 (of gold)

>I can't say I would recommend the practice.

Oh, I just realized that somebody may think about other kkk...

damn, but with number in front of it it's just like yet another unit - I guess?

You're kinda right, but on the other hand how I'll get visa and steal some faamg jobs if they'll not accept foreigners? /s

ok, just kidding, now serious take:

US population: 330kk

Rest of the World: 8kkk

Delta (8kkk-330kk)

Even if we assume that distribution of highly skilled people is not uniform (lack of decent higher edu places, harder access to computers/internet)

then you still lose shitton of outliers

edit.

ops I misread.

tester34··on Former Boeing 737 Max Chief Technical Pilot Indicted for Fraud
maybe this industry isn't like software where all equipment you need for almost all jobs is 16gb ram, nvme m2 disk, decent cpu laptop
tester34··on Design patterns let you apply existing solutions to your code
>What exactly is there in the definition that ties this to an implementation?

In definition nothing, but I believe there are very popular implementations (mostly one) of given design pattern that people are aware of and associate with given design pattern

and I guess it may kinda improve communication? idk.

tester34··on Design patterns let you apply existing solutions to your code
>Design patterns are not features missing from a toolkit or language. This is perhaps the biggest miscomprehension regarding design patterns.

It's relatively popular opinion that some design patterns are used because some languages lack some features that can achieve similar stuff in "better" way.

So what's design pattern in your opinion?

For me design pattern is just approach to some specific problem, very often connected with some $implementation_example in order to communicate more effectively.

Design pattern's purpose is to improve communication by naming solutions to "common" problems.

>Server-side machine learning is the way to go.

If it has 99% accuracy, then you're banning thousands of players

>Also the server should not send info a legitimate client have no use of.

do not games send "too much" in order to play around networking constrains?

tester34··on Seven Deadly Sins of Introductory Programming Language Design (1996) [pdf]
>One of the decisions that payed the most in my later programming endeavors was deciding to learn C and C++ in high school

I started with C++ in high school, but probably not $newest_version_at_the_time and it was mess for me

I felt like I was fighting language / compiler instead of trying to solve problems. "wtf? I remember that it worked fine week ago! <googling again some basic thing like array length>" or asking teacher about compiler errors

Somebody then showed me C# and I instantly switched

tester34··on Almost All of Facebook’s Top Christian Pages in 2019 Run by Foreign Troll Farms
I think focusing on religion/christianity is missing the point here - it's irrelevant probably, the point is that on global web 2.0 websites there may be manipulation

That's kinda weakness of english language itself, because when everybody is capable of using it, then it's hard to distinguish actual native speakers from foreign actors (and genuine users too) that are proficient at it,

meanwhile let's say that you have group of people only using some not so popular language like X, then it's way harder to pretend to be X user, so at worst you're being trolled by people from your country which may not have as bad intentions.

Or maybe I'm too optimistic about my not so popular language :)

tester34··on What our research says about teen well-being and Instagram
so the education and parents, especially them, are to blame, I guess.

>Facebook/IG make some people feel bad, because they open the website and see people having fun, people out partying, people looking more attractive, and they feel "worse".

Indeed, Internet's standards are higher when it comes to anything basically, not only look, but even things like programming and stuff

tester34··on Domain-Driven Design
DDD is a software engineering concept that if you took

100 software engineers with decade of experience,

then 30 of them would have no idea or understood it bad, and then you'd have 70 different interpretations

funny anecdote: at my last semester of eng. degree there was presentation to perform about some fancy topic. One person who had I guess like 2 or 3 years of xp decided to pick DDD and thought he'll manage to do it like a day or a few before presentation

He failed kinda hard with understanding it

tester34··on Asynchronous Programming in C#
but shouldnt it be that ValueTask is used everywhere by default and class "exists for some usecase"?
tester34··on Asynchronous Programming in C#
http://joeduffyblog.com/2015/11/19/asynchronous-everything/

>We were able to share this experience with .NET in time for C#’s await to ship. Sadly, by then, .NET’s Task had already been made a class. Since .NET requires async method return types to be Tasks, they cannot be zero-allocation unless you go out of your way to use clumsy patterns like caching singleton Task objects.

tester34··on Disclosure of three 0-day iOS vulnerabilities

tester34··on Stop Reading News (2013)
not that long time ago I wrote this on HN

>but what's the point of watching(/reading) news? why bother?

>It's poor deal, it's not worth.

>Just because I may learn some small things that probably do not affect me directly and additionally receive some news that make my mood worse due to hearing some yet another negative news about bad stuff / politics / yada yada, what's the point?

>80% of the news I read is HN and some programming related websites and whenever I jump into "mainstream" media, then I feel like I'm reading some shit - click baits, tragedies, controversial stuff, drama seeking, celebrities

>it's irrelevant for me

now, if I just managed to drop HN and Reddit then I'd be free

I guess I'd have to change career.
