The pelican is really getting old as an a standalone evaluation metric. By now they are certainly going to be in training set if not explicitly tuned to produce it for the press on HN alone.

Keep the pelican but isn’t it time to add something else more novel that all current and past models struggle with?

> I for one love the advances in technology in something as supposedly simple as a shoe. And maybe I'll get to use it on a hike in a few years.

These shoes are practically disposable. They trade longevity for noticeable gains in performance. Even the tier below don’t last very long. This is not tech that is going to filter down to your hiking boots.

> They didn’t find intact hunks of charcoal (obviously)

Coal itself is ancient and you can find large chunks of carbonized wood (not quite coal, still retaining its original form) that are millions of years old. There is no reason charcoal could not survive intact from any point in time that humans have existed and made fires.

teruakohatu··on A disabled kea parrot is the alpha male of his circus
Keas are amazing birds. There is a funny video from a CCTV camera that was setup to discover who kept moving road cones, turns out it was a kea:

https://old.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/12dkeex/...

This paper is interesting but I do wonder if a kea with a disability in the wild would be an alpha, when food was not provided by humans.

It is a little ambiguous (what exactly is a "3x3 cube") but I tried a bunch of variations and I simply could not get any Gemini models to produce the right output.

> It is like hiring an army of accountants that have never done math on paper and exclusively let turbotax do all the work.

That is exactly been the situation for years. Once graduated accountants are not doing maths. They are using software (Exel, Xero etc.). They do need to know some basic formulas eg. NPV.

What they need to know is the law, current business practices etc.

Once you go stainless you don’t go back. None of the hassle of cast iron, and eggs don’t stick with just some basic skill. Very easy to clean, no need to be gentle like with cast iron ceramic or non stick pans.

Many do go overseas. They would definitely get paid more in Australia. But New Zealand is a pleasant place to live.

Forestry is well paid in NZ, the average forester is probably better paid than the average developer. Although the ceiling for software devs is much higher.

But Forestry also has the highest number of industrial accidents.

We have a strong health and safety regime and culture. Most primary industries are heavily automated. Yet it only takes a simple mistake to cause injury.

Don’t forget doing only enough manual labour not to get hurt, killed or develop a chronic condition.

You can make a lot of money doing many skilled manual jobs in my country. Trades are highly paid and there is not enough supply. Better money than software development.

They often wreck their backs, or develop other chronic conditions. The successful ones stop doing manual work by the time they are in their 40s and move to running their own businesses employing 20 year olds.

A friend of mine just lost a family member a few weeks ago. He slipped on a roof.

Using many different models, just not NN for this particular application.
teruakohatu··on Google's 200M-parameter time-series foundation model with 16k context
I tend to avoid time series forecasting when I can help it because I find it hard to communicate to stakeholders that a neural network (or another method) is not an oracle.

If you are talking about granularity of observations, it would depend on what you are trying to predict (the price in an hour or the price in 12 months?) and how quickly you need the prediction (100ms? Tomorrow morning?). If I had infinite data I would use granularity as a hyper parameter and tune that to a level that produced the best test results.

I am for example currently using weekly averages for non-price data forecasting. I could use daily data but weekly is absolutely adequate for this purpose.

teruakohatu··on Google's 200M-parameter time-series foundation model with 16k context
What is not generally understood is that these models don’t predict egg prices or inflation in Italy.

They decompose a time series into trends, seasonality and residuals. That’s what they are actually modelling.

They cannot predict wars in the Middle East influencing inflation unless there is a seasonal pattern(s).

> Brave Browser unable to block certain ads due to Rust language limitations

Deceptive HN title.

Someone whose GH account has since been deleted posted a comment on an issue a few months ago saying “the rust languages does not support lookaround regex”. Either a language barrier or a misunderstanding, since there is no fundamental issue with rust itself.

I flagged this submission.

> Yeah, but you're not normally going to random websites, downloading an exe and running it.

Most or many of secure mobile operating system zero days are caused by image parsing. There is a threat at least as big, if not bigger, in parsing complex file formats.

Sure gopher or gemini would be more secure, but even without JS the web ecosystem would be venerable.

That is a false equivalence. What a YC-backed company does is not relevant to how a YC-owned web forum operates.
