teroshan··on Death of South Korean actor at 24 sparks discussion about internet culture
In 2020, Hana Kimura, contestant of the Japanese TV Show "Terrace House" took her own life after online harassment.

It sparked similar discussions, which resulted in harsher penalities for online insults.

teroshan··on Half-Life 2 and Dishonored art lead Viktor Antonov has died
> If you have experience with games, play on expert, seriously. Thief makes the game harder by adding objectives and constraints, not just stat scaling.

Thanks for that tip, will definitely remember it when I get around to playing it

teroshan··on Half-Life 2 and Dishonored art lead Viktor Antonov has died
The bleakness of both Half Life 2 and Dishonored's really resonated with me. I can't overstate how much I appreciated both of these games, and in no small part thanks to the art direction.

This is really sad news, but it's amazing how much of a profound impact he left on so many players, and without a doubt on so many past, current, and future artists.

teroshan··on Do any languages specify package requirements in import / include statements?

teroshan··on Joint Declaration by Ministers of Germany, France, Poland, Italy, Spain, UK
> enhance resilience to cognitive warfare and hybrid threats in Europe, also through the relevant EU mechanisms, and promote the resilience of our societies

This is really interesting to me.

I'm wondering what a systematic approach to combat fake news, foreign interference, and other social media abuse would look like.

It's a beautiful coffee table book, I love opening a page randomly and (re)discovering a game.

teroshan··on Shizuku: App that lets you use system APIs with higher privileges without root
I use it on multiple devices, including an Android 11 e-reader which doesn't support the capability to auto-update natively.

As for newer Android versions I don't remember exactly what my issues were, but I think it had to do with a manual confirmation for update or non-background updates. To be confirmed though.

teroshan··on Shizuku: App that lets you use system APIs with higher privileges without root
Shizuku is a boon to get around Android's limited app auto-update capabilities, which helps when using non-Google Play apps.

See [1] for a list of apps leveraging Shizuku.

I use:

- Droid-ify [2] as a F-Droid alternative, to have auto-updating apps

- Mihon [3] as a Manga reader, with auto-updating extensions

- Canta [4] to remove bloat

teroshan··on Entire Annapurna Game Team Resigns
True, but as a publisher they had a really good eye for funding interesting games. It's a real loss for me, as I tend to rely on publishers to curate my games for me.

I wanted to give a selection of their games, but it's so long that I can just link the Wikipedia page instead: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annapurna_Interactive#Games_pu...

teroshan··on Stop Killing Games – European Citizens' Initiative
As I understand, this would also apply to e.g. micro-transactions/cosmetics which would be categorized as 'possessions' if I follow the wording in this proposal. So this would include F2P games, requiring them to provide a way to enjoy those cosmetics.

As for subscription-based games, Ross Scott put them in a separate category in a previous video of his [1], as you willingly pay for access to a service which has a known end date (end of the month). Although with the micro-transactions angle in mind, I'm not sure how this changes things.

teroshan··on “Attention assault” on Fandom
Not only this, but I've been using Kagi's Redirect feature to redirect fandom results if I see some. For instance for Path of Exile, simply:

Alternatively the Redirector extension can also achieve similar results, without having Kagi, and converting all links, not just search results [1].

teroshan··on KOReader Document Viewer for E Ink devices
I personally use a dictionary generated from a wikitionary dump. I used to use a script [1] to generate it, but some are now already available and linked in the KOReader wiki [2]. I found a wikitionary-based bilingual dictionary is quite good!

teroshan··on Kobo announces color e-readers
Have been using various Kobo's for years with KOReader now, it's basically as simple as copying files on the device to install it. There is no need to jailbreak it; it's an open device. Also, I haven't heard any mention of covert update to worry about. So yes, I would absolutely recommend a Kobo for your use case.

A few months ago, I attempted to do install KOReader on a kindle, and the experience is definitely not for the faint of heart. Plus, I can't use the wireless capabilities for the reason you mentioned. It was (one) of the reason I wanted to install KOReader in the first place, but live and learn.

teroshan··on Kobo announces color e-readers
Know that while useful in some scenarios, I'd avoid buying a color e-ink display if you're still going to primarily be using it for B&W colors.

To quote the eBook Reader Blog [1]:

> The main drawback with color E Ink screens is they look darker than regular B&W screens because of a color filter layer that is applied over the top of the screen, which makes the contrast appear lower. Kaleido color screens are really just regular black and white E Ink Carta screens with a fancy passive filter over the top (that’s why color resolution is lower than black and white resolution).

teroshan··on Cory Doctorow on Kagi Search

You can configure a private browser session link [1] which prevents having to log in in private mode. I use in on both chrome and Firefox on my desktop, and on Firefox mobile on my android smartphone.

That's exactly what I configured right after reading this news, here's a rule I came up with:

(https?://www\.nytimes\.com\/\d{4}\/\d{2}\/\d{2}.*)|https://archive.is/newest/$1

Unfortunately, I quickly encountered the "Too Many Requests" error while testing. Maybe I should configure an nginx rule to distribute requests along my multiple VPSes to mitigate this...

teroshan··on Toward a more useful keyboard
If you're in need of AZERTY-specific keys and you're on a QWERTY layout, take a look at https://github.com/qwerty-fr/qwerty-fr.

It's a strict superset of QWERTY, and it enables entering e.g. è and È with altgr+e and shift+altgr+e respectively.
