tenpoundhammer··on Ask HN: What are words that you cannot spell without a spell checker?
Seperate and reccommendation (spelled wrong for context) are the ones I get wrong the most.
tenpoundhammer··on Pandora Is Said to Have Held Talks About Selling Itself
It would be great if Netflix bought pandora, I can see Netflix doing really great things with the underlying tech and expanding on the general idea and service of pandora. Also the pandora recommendation engine could be leveraged to provide improved Netflix recommendations.
tenpoundhammer··on Pandora Is Said to Have Held Talks About Selling Itself
It would be really cool if Netflix bought pandora, I can see Netflix doing really great things with the underlying tech and expanding on the general idea of pandora. Also the pandora recommendation engine could be leverage to provide improved Netflix recomendations.
tenpoundhammer··on Marc Andreessen Pro-Colonialism Tweet Riles India Tech World
These people are shining a bright light on their own ignorance. I have worked with many Indians through out the years, and they are fiercely independent, inventive, and hard working. As a people and as a nation Indians are incredibly smart and thoughtful, it's incredibly disparaging for an outsider to claim that the Indian people don't know what's best for themselves. Under colonial rule the Indian people, their wealth, and their culture were plundered and forever destroyed, now they are seeing a similar attack coming from facebook. They are smart to carefully guard their people from corporate interests who are seeking only to exploit them.

All in all the ruling class has the same arguments now as they have always had, "What's best for everyone is what's best for me" and they are always hurt when everyone doesn't agree.

tenpoundhammer··on Apple fans are coming to hate Apple software
I wonder if this is related to a problem hiring engineers, Apple seems to be in a full on war to employee software developers in silicon valley. They are competing with hot startups, self employment, and variety of other concerns.

Many of the issues that I'm hearing about Apples software quality appear to be caused by a company who is trying to do too much with too few engineering resources. They are getting stretched thin and having to make more quality sacrifices than their customers are willing to tolerate.

I bet that if they opened an additional engineering office in a less contentious area of the united states they would be able to staff teams more easily, with longer average tenures, and tap into the talent pool and skills that they are currently unable to hire at the volumes they require.

I would suggest Portland, Oregon as I'm a native Oregonian, and because we have some of the best software engineers in the world!

tenpoundhammer··on Show HN: AppApp.io – A better search for the iOS App Store
Way better than the built in app store search, however I can't see the titles of the apps only the search terms.
tenpoundhammer··on Placebo effect works in video games too
Seems like this study set people up to believe a system was trying to help them so instead of seeing a random set of events unfolding they were looking for a pattern and then trying to attribute that pattern to the system they believed was helping them.

This doesn't seem like the placebo effect, it seems like an example of the human mind trying to find patterns that don't exist. Just like when someone tells you a cloud looks like something and then you can't stop seeing that thing in the clouds until it goes away. Tell people there's an AI and they can't stop seeing it, even if it's not there.

tenpoundhammer··on DARE: The Anti-Drug Program That Never Actually Worked
I did actually, I know police officers are human and capable of error, but this is ridiculous. Why even have your gun loaded when walking into a presentation like this?
tenpoundhammer··on DARE: The Anti-Drug Program That Never Actually Worked
The only thing I can remember is the dare officer teaching us how to use a bong and how to cook heroin in a spoon. I'm not sure how that's supposed to stop us from using drugs though.
tenpoundhammer··on Temporary Visas, Meant to Import Talent, Help Ship Jobs Abroad
I think the New York Times and other publications need to put more scrutiny on the congress in stories like this,

"When Congress designed temporary work visa programs, the idea was to bring in foreigners with specialized, hard-to-find skills who would help American companies grow, creating jobs to expand the economy. Now, though, some companies are bringing in workers on those visas to help move jobs out of the country."

I think this quote represents what congress claimed to be doing, but instead were just obeying their corporate masters and knew full well that the program would be used to erode the us workforce and workers rights in order to enrich large corporations.

I don't expect journalistic institutions to agree with me but I do expect them to call out politicians far more than they are, and to question their motives with poorly thought laws like this one.

tenpoundhammer··on The CIA Campaign to Steal Apple's Secrets
“Tearing apart the products of U.S. manufacturers and potentially putting backdoors in software distributed by unknowing developers all seems to be going a bit beyond ‘targeting bad guys.’ It may be a means to an end, but it’s a hell of a means.”

The government continues it's never ending campaign to save us from ourselves (or each other?)

tenpoundhammer··on Online Cheating Site AshleyMadison Hacked
The possibilities are endless, I imagine someone will make this data easily searchable and journalists will be digging through to found anyone of notoriety that was dumb enough to sign up with their own names and credit cards etc. This hack could create a ton of news stories, including record divorce rates.

I'm curious as to how the ashley madison admins are killing these links? DMCA takedowns? What's the mechanism for this?

tenpoundhammer··on Show HN: Bubblin – Next-generation books
I read the material, and a good portion of it appears to be at a much lower level than 10th grade, but the mathmatical portion appears to be high school level if you stripped a few pieces of this book you would have something around 4-5th grade level ish.
tenpoundhammer··on Show HN: Bubblin – Next-generation books
I thought the solar system book was incredible and I am going to talk to my wife about using it as a home school resource. I would definitely love to see more materials show up that are like this. It would be great to have some options for turning things on and off, like page flipping, removing some of the higher level math as it might throw off younger students, and it would be great to have a lock-in mode.

The lock-in mode would be a parental control that keeps a child from going to other sites, so that I could set my kid loose on a book and know they aren't playing video games.

While I acknowledge that other platforms make e-books and interactive books, I love that you are making a centralized location on the web for the creation and curation of these resources.

tenpoundhammer··on Ask HN: Online Platform for Organizing Labor?(Uber for Unions)
It was a half-cocked attempt to be relatable and generate buzz, at this point I regret trying to make that connection.
tenpoundhammer··on Has the First Person to Achieve Immortality Already Been Born?
I was bounding this conclusion on the possibility that someone could be alive until the end of time, that could be a million or a billion years . I think under those constraints it's entirely plausible that life would lose all meaning.
tenpoundhammer··on Has the First Person to Achieve Immortality Already Been Born?
Assuming we could keep the human body alive forever, I don't think we could handle it a person would eventually go insane. Also it would get incredibly boring at some point and I imagine the suicide rate would be somewhere near a 100% or at minimum people would allow themselves to die.

I definitely don't want to live forever.

So my answer is No, and no one will ever be immortal.

tenpoundhammer··on Why Software Maker Fog Creek Is Helping Its Competitors Hire Women
impressmyself.co , It probably won't be up until next week sometime though. I have to figure how I want to write the blog post, and then actually do it.
tenpoundhammer··on Why Software Maker Fog Creek Is Helping Its Competitors Hire Women
I'm going to quote this on my blog, I love everythin about this comment.
tenpoundhammer··on Why Software Maker Fog Creek Is Helping Its Competitors Hire Women
I wanted to reply to all the comments so I just decided to reply to my own comment. For those telling me I'm misinterpreting what a 10x dev is, I don't think a solid definition of the 10x developer actually exists it's mostly in the eye of the beholder.

I think it's mostly in what other people think of them especially that guy that hands out raises. So it's incredibly subjective.

I say a 10x developer is someone that can create features 10x faster than everyone else, regardless of their other skills.

To be clear my dream rockstart software engineer is not a 10x developer. They are 5x developer, a 5x Team player, 5x architect and 10x Mentor. So maybe we need a dictionary of terms around what people by various nicknames and concepts given to the various kinds of software developers.

tenpoundhammer··on Why Software Maker Fog Creek Is Helping Its Competitors Hire Women
I worked with a 10x developer once, he was awful and I couldn't stand to work with him. Although he could produce an insane amount of code and functionality his presence was like throwing a grenade into the middle of the dev team everyday. He left to take a job at google and the overall team productivity went up significantly. He basically did 10X individually, but took 11x away from the team. So team work is pretty darn important.
tenpoundhammer··on Avoiding Massive Fraud: A Good Reason to Teach Children Software Development
That's a good point, but I think having a basic understanding of software development issues would provide a project manager with the insights needed to know that something should be done at all, at which point they would then need the ability to do something.
tenpoundhammer··on Investing in Women-led Fortune 1000 Companies
This is really cool, but I'd love to see this narrowed down to something super scientific. Cause I can already hear the haters, screaming about control groups, sample sizes, and all that stuff. Which is actually important.

Right now I take it for what it is a quick mock up of some shallow data. But it seems compelling enough to take a deeper Nate Silver ( http://fivethirtyeight.com/ ) style deep dive.

tenpoundhammer··on Salt – Sustainable Alternative Lighting
Based on the video posted below by coob ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vOuj_feM2s) it looks like it utilizes a well known re-active element ( Zinc-Oxide) to generate electricity.

http://sci-toys.com/scitoys/scitoys/echem/batteries/batterie...

So the real question is, how long does it take for the Zinc Oxide to be depleted, how much does it cost to replace, and how hard is it to replace?

tenpoundhammer··on Ask HN: How to manage developers who aren't very good?
I have had this exact same problem, I mean exactly the same. I found out a few things:

1. It takes time, be patient

2. Get under people and push them up. Instead of standing over them and pulling them up. What's the difference ? In the first you are saying "I'm not too good too grab someones foot and boost them up", in the second you are saying " I have arrived now I'm going to drag up to my level of greatness".

3. Sometimes people are distracted and slow because they are a square peg being jammed into a round hole. Not every programmer thrives in the same environment, you have to tailor your management and help style for each individual.

tenpoundhammer··on [dead]
I feel like you have some strong experience in this area. As a consumer, the communication I got about a new modem is that I should get one because better things will happen. I was not told my speeds would be dramatically and they would refuse to provide the service I was paying for. I probably would have switched sooner if they had.
tenpoundhammer··on [dead]
Nope
tenpoundhammer··on [dead]
My writing comprehension is getting tore up!

"Sooner" should have been drawn out into a new sentence. That sentence should clarify that I was not entitled to be upset about not getting the appropriate internet speed in the past several months, because I had not complained about it sooner.

Does that help?

tenpoundhammer··on [dead]
I spent an hour and a half to get it resolved. I was upset about them telling me that it's my responibility to ensure I get what I paid for. It seems like I'm paying to do that.

Also most of the bad reviews of the local dsl have been from people I know, and yes I'm sure comcast as has many bad reviews.

My options are to have a terrible exerpience with really slow internet or to have a terrible experience with maybe faster internet... It's partly my fault for living here though there are pros and cons to living in small towns.
