temporalparts··on Legacy and Athlete Preferences at Harvard (2020) [pdf]
Harvard has over $50 Billion in its endowment. If it wanted to expand its exceptional educational access across America, it very well could.

Harvard is primarily a brand for wealthy people, and they need the non-wealthy cohort to justify the legitimacy of their degree. Harvard does have world class institutions, but that’s primarily to reinforce the brand they’re selling to wealthy alumni and donors who wants their kids to enter the exclusive club.

temporalparts··on The Fight over Phonics [audio]
The hubris of Lucy Calkins is awful and destructive to society. There needs to be, at the very least, civil proceedings against her for the damage she has done to youths around the country, which she persisted even in light of contrary evidence of the process she has profited from for decades.
temporalparts··on Waymo and Uber partner to bring autonomous driving technology to Uber
That's what they thought about Google Video, but then Google decided to buy Youtube. Technical advantage (which Google has in strides) does not always translate to business advantage (which Uber has done remarkably well for itself).
temporalparts··on Analog Chess
What would people think about doing a tournament for analog chess? I'd be willing to put down $1k for the prize pool. I think it'll be cool to see what creative strategies people come up for this.

I made a post to this effect: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34377233

temporalparts··on Nord Stream leaks confirmed as sabotage, Sweden says
This has happened before for another conflict that Russia was involved in:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_Russia%E2%80%93Georgia_en...

> It’s especially absurd that Russia was ever even considered a suspect.

So I don't see how it's absurd to suspect a repeat of the nearly exact same situation where the only common party is Russia.

The fact that you think it's absurd without looking into facts either makes you naive or worse.

temporalparts··on The FBHHRBNRSSSHK-Algorithm for Multiplication is still not the end
simple proof that you can't get better than O(n^2) is that you need to produce an n x n matrix with O(n^2) distinct values, so you need at least O(n^2) just to print the result.
temporalparts··on Baker's Math (2009)
This was a response to an old law where bakers were accused of "cheating" customers by overpricing undersized loaves or intentionally creating giant air pockets in their bread to minimize the amount of converted flour the customer would be getting.

temporalparts··on City-based soda pop taxes don’t effectively reduce sugar consumption
Production is usually not within the jurisdiction of cities (as they are produced elsewhere and shipped there usually), so cities are limited in what they can do. As to busybody, excess sugar consumption is a public health problems that governments should intervene on, as I believe it is right for them to do in areas like tobacco.
temporalparts··on Speech by Chair Powell on monetary policy and price stability
Burden of proof should be on the person asserting the claim, not the other way around.
temporalparts··on Why none of my books are available on Audible
But the credits are SOOOOO much cheaper than the raw audiobook cost. Since books are over $40 whereas credits are at most $15.
temporalparts··on Faked Beta-Amyloid Data. What Does It Mean?
Ask HN: What do you think about a law that criminalizes faking and doctoring data for their research? Clearly we need greater punitive consequences for these types of behavior that's becoming an epidemic in research.
temporalparts··on Why walking on Legos hurts more than walking on fire or ice (2018)
FWIW, the current world record holder for barefoot lego walk is [0]. Funny enough though, nothing on the text says that the legos can't be pieced together so it's all flat.

temporalparts··on ‘Your Map Is Wrong’
Advertising spend is not zero-sum. Budgets are determined by advertising efficiency; if a new platform comes along that significantly improves cost per conversion, then you'd allocate more money than before. The reason advertisers are flocking to Google and Facebook is because of their advertisement efficiency (through targeting), and this has lead to an increase in overall advertiser spending.
temporalparts··on Ask HN: Built an app for my university. Faculty loved it. Should I charge them?
+1. The best advice is to go talk to a lawyer. HackerNews is full of opinionated people who aren't lawyers.
temporalparts··on Ask HN: Built an app for my university. Faculty loved it. Should I charge them?
If you don't own the IP, like other people said, try packaging as an opportunity to sell the same app to other universities, with you sharing in the profit.
temporalparts··on Porn Actress Kitty Lixo Gets IG Account Unbanned by Having Sex W Meta Employees
I wonder if this is a fireable offense at Meta?
temporalparts··on What I learned as a hired consultant to autodidact physicists (2016)
Do you have a picture of the book? Can you post a picture of the passage and cover? That would be fascinating to see! (I believe you fwiw, not doing the whole "pics or it didn't happen" :) )
temporalparts··on Gravity Hill
Great places for Nikola to showcase their latest vehicles!
temporalparts··on We must return to an economy fueled by innovation, rather than disruption
Any article that says:

> Anybody who’s ever taken an Economics 101 course knows

clearly has no idea what they're talking about. Real market are far more complex than what can be described by Economics 101

temporalparts··on Stories of reaching Staff-plus engineering roles
I think the recent "Staff-plus" fascination comes from the extreme dilution these past years of the "Senior" engineering role. Meaningless title inflation is real.
temporalparts··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
The extension has a counter that'll tell you how many were removed.
temporalparts··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
I built a chrome extension that removes duplicate tabs silently and automagically. No complex interactions required. It's removed over 9000 tabs for me personally over the course of a year and a half.

temporalparts··on Analysis of Magic Leap 2 at SPIE AR/VR/Mr 2022
Wasn't everyone (including Steve Jobs) crazy over the Segway?
temporalparts··on Scientists find there are 70% fewer pollinators, due to air pollution
I mean the future of a lot of countries were decided by rulers pushing their citizens to breed in order to fill out more countries.
temporalparts··on Scientists find there are 70% fewer pollinators, due to air pollution
Sounds like there's at least 70% more pollutinators.

I'll show myself out and accept the downvotes.

temporalparts··on No amount of alcohol is good for the heart, says World Heart Federation
Have you actually done research differentiating between the risks of tobacco exposure and radiation exposure?

There's no scientific evidence to suggest that small doses of radiation (< 0.1 mSv) is harmful to you, at all. In fact, there's even scientific evidence to suggest the opposite, it's called radiation hormesis.

temporalparts··on Are warp drives science now?
I've never considered subluminal warp drives, but it'd be really exciting if we can create warp drives that are some healthy fraction of c.
temporalparts··on Tesla's Next-Generation Model Y Chassis
They will be designing the cars with buffers, but if a crash can go through all of that AND damages the single casting chassis, which are a lot stronger, then you should thankful because you'll likely have gotten way more injured with a traditional chassis.
temporalparts··on Evidence for a mouse origin of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant
Exciting! Now only if they can find the origins of the original virus.
temporalparts··on Book Review: “Viral” by Alina Chan and Matt Ridley
One of my favorite fallacies is the fallacy fallacy. Just because one used fallacious reasoning, doesn't mean they're wrong. e.g. I can give a bad reason for why 16/64 = 1/4, just cross out the 6's, but just because the reason is bad doesn't mean the result is wrong.
