temp8964··on Break Up The Elite College Seats Cartel
I guess you can use the same idea to create a national car company, a national cloud service company, a national food company, a national computer store, a national hospital, a national everything company. What a great idea!
temp8964··on Could the greatest works of literature be undiscovered?
This sounds like a problem for AI to solve. The AI can be trained with literature labeled at different level of greatest and then build a model to scan all the literature. Then one day the AI will come out of the cave: I just read a million books, so you don't have to!
temp8964··on Amazon and the dystopian future of book censorship
TLDR: Amazon thinks his book has a copyright violation but refuses to reveal the details.
temp8964··on John Rawls and the “Veil of Ignorance” (2020)
I have no problem with the idea of the veil of ignorance, but what's wrong with the discussion is the fundamental idea that you can use your imagination to design a society.

Itself is supposed to be a thought experiment, it has no pretention or suggestion that the imagined design could work. Buuuuuuut, tons of people confuse the two and they start think the society can work as how they imagined.

It's like when someone designs a machine, he/she begins with: let's assume there is no gravity. Well, in science actually you can do a thought experiment like that, but that's not how you design a machine! You need to know what the reality is and work with the reality!

If you want to design a society, you need to start with knowledge about the human nature and the nature of a society. You can't just assume everyone is selfless, or assume nobody is going to kill/rob anybody, or assume everyone will work hard, or assume everyone has the same capabilities, or assume a community of a hundred will work like a community of a thousand. There are lots of fundamental knowledge you need to learn. While you are learning more and more about human nature and societies, you will find out there are lot of common features across cultures and societies, and you will find out the whole idea of imagining a society with your simple rule of justice is just so superficial that it's totally laughable.

temp8964··on Show HN: An open source alternative to Evernote (Self Hosted)
The most important feature of Evernote for me is saving attachments locally so they can be modified on the client machine and then automatically synced. Most alternatives can only allow you to download the attachment and then reupload the attachment manually.
temp8964··on Elon Musk Tesla email: Remote work is no longer acceptable
LoL. Whose gets to decide "possible"?
temp8964··on I got hacked and Facebook banned me
Basically it's a story of a regular account got hacked and used for spamming. This must have happened a lot. But Facebook is so incompetent that it cannot identify this very obvious pattern:

1. A legitimate account has long history of posting organic content.

2. The account email/password gets changed.

3. The account starts doing spamming.

Seriously, how hard is it? How hard is it?

If Facebook really care about the legitimate user behind the account, they can easily get this problem fixed.

If I am wrong, please enlighten me why it is a problem difficult to solve.

temp8964··on Tell HN: Cloudflare prevents transfer-out of domains, sets to 'pendingdelete'
Exactly. It’s basically we are a big corporation we pay for big lawyers so we can f you if we want to.
temp8964··on Tell HN: Cloudflare prevents transfer-out of domains, sets to 'pendingdelete'
Another thing I read in the comments under that thread is that there are people here trying to advocate CloudFlare to kick other customers out because disapproval of their politics. This sounds dangerous too. I think this has something to do with what CF did in the past.
temp8964··on You don’t need to be “enterprise-ready” or “scalable”
> they were being developed by FTPing files to production server or even editing them live with vim or something.

Many editors / IDEs (e.g. Notepad++) can directly connect to the FTP server, so working on a FTP servers looks almost same as working on a local folder. You just make changes to the files, and then refresh the web browser to see the changes.

temp8964··on Ask HN: Has Cloudflare blocked your domain without explaining what's going on?
Agree your point. But I think Microsoft doesn’t belong to this group. I never read an auto ban story from Microsoft. And my experience is that you can talk to a human customer service from Microsoft.
temp8964··on Ask HN: Has Cloudflare blocked your domain without explaining what's going on?
WOW. This sounds extremely bad.

I started using a personal domain just for email to avoid Google AI kind of screwups, I didn’t know a domain name can have this kind of screwups. I am using a traditional domain hosting company now, definitely not going to use this kind of new tech company to handle the most critical thing.

temp8964··on Ask HN: Has Cloudflare blocked your domain without explaining what's going on?
I am really curious about this. How screwed is this? Can you move your domain out, if you want to?
temp8964··on No Fair Sex in Academia: Evidence of Discrimination in Hiring to Editorial Board
Actually it's expected to be negative.
temp8964··on No Fair Sex in Academia: Evidence of Discrimination in Hiring to Editorial Board
I almost confused your link with Wikipedia...
temp8964··on Ask HN: Burnt-out, directionless but want to turn it around
Only 10% of programmers are top 10% programmers, 90% are not.

At age of 28, you should look at your life in a bigger picture. Instead of spending so much time on work, spend more time on your family and yourself.

Also, I want to add that the feeling of being a loser is exactly because you are not thinking about your life holistically. If you are really depressed, and feeling this way all the time, you need to talk to a mental health professional.

temp8964··on Schools should be using open source software
How do you know school use doesn’t need extra functionality? School use covers students, teachers, administrators, and staffs. And usually the choice is at the district level , which includes lots of district staffs.
temp8964··on Schools should be using open source software
Many people don’t like the web version, and Outlook can manage multiple email accounts in one place.
temp8964··on Profiles of people living in homeless encampments, rarely what you’d expect
How do you do drugs when you don’t have money to buy drugs?
temp8964··on Schools should be using open source software
Also many comments here forget people have both work computer and personal computers. Most people are familiar with the Windows eco system from their personal computer. Forcing them to learn a different system is just unrealistic.
temp8964··on Schools should be using open source software
> MS Office Suite ==> LibreOffice Suite

LoL. LibreOffice Suite is terrible compared to MS Office. There’s simply nothing on par with Excel, PowerPoint, or Word. Also many are forced to use Outlook because of MS exchange.

temp8964··on FireZone – Open-source VPN server and firewall
Thanks. I will take a look.
temp8964··on FireZone – Open-source VPN server and firewall
Yes. I am looking for something like Tailscale but can be self-hosted.
temp8964··on FireZone – Open-source VPN server and firewall
There is a "conspiracy" theory that those VPN works in China because they have a connection to the CCP.

It would be amazing if Tailscale can use ExpressVPN kind of services for handshaking so that it can work inside the GFW.

temp8964··on FireZone – Open-source VPN server and firewall
Would any of those can be used against China's GFW?

Tailscale could be blocked by the GFW [1]. I guess that's because it uses a central beacon node?

Also they are built on WireGuard, which is not obfuscated, so they can be detected by DPI?

temp8964··on GoodWill ransomware forces victims to donate to the poor
Creating Amazon is helping people, billions of people. If you don't understand this, this discussion is pointless. Let's just forget about it.
temp8964··on GoodWill ransomware forces victims to donate to the poor
LoL. Where does he donate hundred billions to can create something like Amazon? The federal government spend 10billions every day.
temp8964··on GoodWill ransomware forces victims to donate to the poor
> "do some majorly positive action for the world"

What can Jeff Bezos do more positive than creating Amazon?

What can Elon Musk do more positive than creating Tesla and SpaceX?

etc. etc.

temp8964··on Ask HN: How do you sync your computer’s development configurations/environment?
Wouldn't remote be the simplest solution?

Unfortunately, I can't find a perfect remote software, which should be able to automatically adapt to client resolutions, support multiple monitors, use hardware acceleration.

RDP is great, but it does not utilize the high bandwidth of modern network environment, so it's not as performant as it should be.

temp8964··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
I don’t think you can get a driver’s license in one step shop. It usually requires you bring documents and wait in long lines and schedule a test and take the test on a different day and go back wait in long lines. There’s no way you can get a driver’s license with a pulse.
