tehabe··on Alternatives to Google Products
The worst thing, the absolute worst thing is, you know all that but you have gotten so used to the way Google services work, that you simply have a hard time to switch.

E.g. thank to Gmail I rarely use an email application on my computer and use webmail. When I tried out Posteo it was extremely annoying that it logged me out every few minutes and I couldn't get my email. They said this couldn't be changed.

Google really did an excellent job of supply me with services which I want to use. Not just tools which are working well.

BTW, Google doesn't use all its services to sell or personalise ads. Which doesn't mean they don't use them to learn more about you which in turn is used to improve the services so that you them even more.

So as much as I wish I could restore my privacy by leaving Google, I think Google knows me too well that I won't for now.

tehabe··on Inventor says Google is patenting work he put in the public domain
I mistyped, I wanted to say, that you can create your own blueprints by studying a machine. But when your invention is patented this implementation is protected. But in software it is not about the implementation (because that's already protected via copyright) it is about the idea behind the implementation. Which even prohibits different implementations.
tehabe··on Inventor says Google is patenting work he put in the public domain
Another example why software patents don't really work. Because most thing software patents cover are not really inventions but ideas. Also the written code is already protected via copyright. That is the difference to a eg. wind mill, the blue prints are only protected by a patent, not by copyright. And it effects only the implementation.
tehabe··on On paying for software
I think I have never read a piece in which the word "single-minded" is used in a positive way. Mostly people refer to it as a bad thing. Also I don't think that single-mindness really helps developing good software people want to use. Because you already have to think about two things here.

tehabe··on Do We Need Central Banks? (2017)
Many co-op banks are merging into bigger ones these days, they are still local banks which are owned by members of the co-op which are usually people from the region. There are also several bigger co-op banks or rather supra-regional banks. But even small and medium sized banks need regulations and that is what the central bank can really do.
tehabe··on Do We Need Central Banks? (2017)
The short answer is: Yes. The long answer is, that central banks are in my opinion a way to regulate banking and money supply so that it is useful for the economy and the people. His point that deregulation, liberalisation, and privatisation are bad ideas which are likely to fail is something I can agree on. Also his point that central banks are usually not really accountable for they do and that banking consolidation wasn't a good idea to begin with. I'm still glad to live in a country where they are a lot of local banks, which can help SME much better than big banks, which have only a little branch in town. It matters where decisions are made.

The central bank's job is still important, it is lender of last resort and it is an important regulatory body for the banking and financial sector. It is something we need if we want to prevent those financial crisis like in 2008.

tehabe··on Show HN: P2P decentralized messaging application over Bitcoin Cash
Does this mean I would need an own power plant to sent and receive message with this protocol?
tehabe··on One-Of-a-Kind Private Train Takes on Florida’s Traffic Nightmare
I like light rails, prefer them over busses. People kinda trust light rail more than busses, because for light rail you need a track and a station, for busses you just need a bus stop sign.

My bigger point is, when you $10 for a ticket with the train you need to pay additionally for you next leg of the commute. If you commute it is really a good idea when the ticket is valid for your entire commute, not matter to which transport you transfer: train, light rail, or bus.

tehabe··on One-Of-a-Kind Private Train Takes on Florida’s Traffic Nightmare
I like trains, I prefer them over any highway project any time. But I have a few concerns about this train service.

Like it has only 8 north and 8 south bound trains per day. Will this be really interesting for enough commuters to switch?

Also most people won't be at their destination when the train stops at a station, will the ticket be compatible with other transit providers?

Nevertheless I hope it is a success, even though the patriotism on the site is annoying me: "We’re American-made and 100% Buy America-compliant." At least the trains were made by Siemens. ;-)

tehabe··on A free XMPP server powered by green energy and hosted in Germany
Weirdly enough, services like WhatsApp, Signal, or Telegram are more portable. Because the identifier is not owned by the service but is provided by s.o. else. It is essentially a decentralised social graph in the address book of your phone. I'm aware of the caveats though.
tehabe··on A free XMPP server powered by green energy and hosted in Germany
The problem with Jabber is, that you are locked in to one server, switching means that you have to re-add all your contacts and so far there is no automatic way to do it. I think the developer of IMCom (console Jabber client) thought about that and how it could work but I don't think his idea got a lot of attention.
tehabe··on Save the nuclear power plants that generate 50% of America’s clean electricity
But where can you find such a place? In Germany people believed to found such a place in an old salt mine, now they have to get the stuff back before the mine is completely flooded with water and will contaminate the area around it. And that wasn't high radioactive waste. You need to store is from 100,000 to a million years and you need to inform people about it. Which isn't easy b/c we couldn't really understand the writings on the Pyramids in Egypt which were build just a few thousand years ago. Nuclear power is also dangerous because you can't easily tell apart if a country use it to generate power or build a bomb.
tehabe··on Save the nuclear power plants that generate 50% of America’s clean electricity
Nuclear power plants are not clean. Far from it. Radioactive waste is still an unsolved problem.
tehabe··on When banks abandoned American Samoa, the islands found a solution: public banks
Public banks are a good idea. It is part of the success of SME in Germany, because we local and public banks to support them. The third pillar are co-op banks. Which have a similar role.
tehabe··on Google embraces, extends, and extinguishes
I know Conversations, I like it but I lost all my Jabber contacts over the years (also due to the fact that the server I was using shut down). So, my list is empty. I have not tried Dino (I don't use Linux at the moment).
tehabe··on SquirrelMail is being removed from cPanel
I kinda developed a little dislike about Horde, but I heard good things about Kopano, which also works as workgroup software.
tehabe··on Google embraces, extends, and extinguishes
There are also a view counterexamples, for example that Google abandoned its native client in favour of webassembly when the standard took form. The same with progressive web apps which will replace the "web apps" in Chrome.

I was also sad when Google Talk was shutdown for Hangouts but to be honest, XMPP was going nowhere. The quality of available clients was very different. You had awful clients like Apple iChat (which is still awful), complete client like Psi which stopped at some point, clients which wanted to be everything like Adium/Pidgin, etc. pp.

Google Reader was indeed sad and really weird, they could have build on top of their social networks they already had but they wanted something new and shiny. I still look for a good replacement.

tehabe··on Ask HN: Is HN GDPR compliant?
Demanding privacy is not overstepping it is consumer protection. The consumer need to rely that you treat their data responsibly and the GDPR is a rule book what you need to do. And yes, this rule book knows sanctions.
tehabe··on What happened, Gmail?
Inbox looks really nice and is (to me) very simple and I kinda wished Google would have uses Inbox as a template because Inbox has also two things which makes my life really hard: 1 I can't sent emails to groups in my contacts and 2 in the Sent folder it doesn't say to whom I've sent the email but that I sent them, which I already know.

Both issues are also true for the Gmail application on Android.

tehabe··on Whois public database is in breach of GDPR, according to European authorities
It is always the same, a law is enacted and it includes a window of a few years to give everybody time to implement it. A few weeks before the law goes into effect, everybody is screaming that they need more time. I guess we don't leave university after all.
tehabe··on Konrad Kujau, Who Forged Hitler's Diaries
The film is currently available on Netflix in Germany.

tehabe··on IKEA Effect
I have a lot of IKEA stuff and build some of it myself or with other people, but I never had this feeling. More the feeling of annoyance. Once I had to go back because parts didn't fit. It takes awfully long time to assemble. A German TV show even made fun of the assembly instructions, when you put it the right way together the furniture would take over the world.

I think I'm just too used to IKEA furniture.

tehabe··on Road map to clean energy using laser beam ignition of boron-hydrogen fusion
"14 milligram HB11 can produce 300 kWh energy" – I guess it means thermal energy, how much of it can be used for electricity? What do I need for producing this? How small can be such a power plant be or how big must it be to be viable?

Of course this could be all answered in the paper but it is a physics paper not a business or economics paper.

tehabe··on Show HN: Solo – App for sharing loneliness and aloneness
I remember that there was an anonymous social network a while ago. The screenshots for this service look similar. Maybe someone got nostalgic for that long lost application.

Edit: I think that was "Secret", it shut down in 2015.

tehabe··on Show HN: Open Paperless – Scan, index, and archive paper documents
You could store them chronically on paper and do the actual sorting on your computer or server.
tehabe··on 20 Years of Adobe Photoshop
What is still weird to me is this: Photoshop can't be used on a case-sensitive partition.

tehabe··on Record surge in atmospheric CO2 seen in 2016
I know, I just forgot the sarcasm tags. But it really feels awful right now. I think I will shut down my computer for today. Take care.
