I like that idea but aren't we supposed to read the article before voting?

Wouldn't a company responsible for an escalating frequency and severity of cybercrime normally be sanctioned by law enforcement? Wouldn't such a company normally stop these activities for fear of civil and criminal liability?
tedd4u··on Salesforce Global Outage
The other thing people miss is change velocity. NTP server doesn't change much. Salesforce teams are under enormous pressure to constantly deliver new features and ship changes every day. 99.95+% with constant change, millions of customers, 1e10-11 requests a day is challenging.
tedd4u··on The engineering behind the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve
Do they really have brine storage tanks for enough brine to pump out all the oil? If true, they would have just exectly the right volume of above-ground tanks to just store the oil in the first place and not mess with all these caverns and brine and whatnot.

I would draw the comparison to malpractice insurance for doctors. Gun owners should be required to buy something like it. And police departments.

tedd4u··on Neki – Sharded Postgres
We went as far as we could on GCP before PlanetScale. Spanner is amazing but also amazingly expensive. And CloudSQL, also amazing as long as you don’t need write scaling. PlanetScale (Vitess+MySQL plus their branching / deployment and monitoring tools) is just not a combination offered on GCP. And while I didn’t use Aurora, from talking to and exploring AWS it doesn’t really have this combination either.
tedd4u··on Neki – Sharded Postgres
That is what the “regular” PlanetScale is all about. It uses the Vitess open source project to do write scaling through shading. It is very powerful and customizable and stable. It was built to run YouTube. Former happy user here.

tedd4u··on Apple Unveils iPhone Duo
Bigger phone = bigger battery = more time between charges
tedd4u··on iPhone Duo
Probably true but they might have a better hinge, i.e. crease takes longer to appear due to superior folded geometry.

And the Apple case is $129.
tedd4u··on IBM Bob
Agreed. Note, that is at ~50% gross margin and ~15% profit margin which I guess is pretty typical of computer hardware vendors.

I'm still on 1P7 (personal, not team) and still using Dropbox for sync. Hope it never breaks. Never wanted to research the new 1P8 server sync model. Of course I saw that nasty Dropbox unverified IdP account takeover disclosure, so maybe it's no better than whatever 1P is doing on the server.
tedd4u··on Fal.live – AI television directed by everyone
Other "live" generative video model channels to check out:

https://live.reactor.inc Generates infinitive stream of 1 minute episodes based on user prompts

https://infiniteslop.ai Generates infinite stream of 10-second vignettes based on user prompts. very curious what the prompt-upsampling prompt is on this one.

tedd4u··on SOTA Apple Silicon Inference (August 15, 2026)
Apple is rumored to have released updated models of the Mac Mini and Mac Studio "off-schedule" in part to respond to unexpected local-model driven demand. Hopefully they will invest more in the software side.
tedd4u··on Re: S&P 500 index funds, there may be a smarter way to invest
"When everyone indexes, what is the market?

"At some point, it raises the question of what actually is the market. If everyone is buying stocks based solely on their market value, how is that value actually being set?"

…

"According to research by Hendrik Bessembinder, professor of business and finance at Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business, over the 55-year period from 1971 through 2025, an equal-weight strategy beat the traditional value-based index approach by an average of 1.3 percentage points a year, or 12.6% to 11.3%. As the proponents of index funds repeatedly argue, such differences really make a big difference over time."

tedd4u··on You Rename My Lake – I Move My Hosting
They just haven't re-rendered the map tiles yet. See the hurricane banner here [1]. "Per Secretarial Order 3453, Lake Ontario has been renamed to Lake America. The basemaps for GNIS are in the process of being updated to reflect this name change."

[1] https://edits.nationalmap.gov/apps/gaz-domestic/public/gaz-r...

tedd4u··on You Rename My Lake – I Move My Hosting
I think the "speed" is because this change probably just shows up in Google by virtue of changes propagating in the GNIS feed [1]. It showed up in the feed Aug 27th with a note on the executive order [2].

[1] https://www.usgs.gov/tools/geographic-names-information-syst...

[2] 'Secretary's Order 3453 directs the Board on Geographic Names ("BGN") to immediately rename Lake Ontario to Lake America and to update the Geographic Names Information System to appropriately reflect the change. This Order implements President Trump's direction in Executive Order 14420 "Honoring the American History of the Great Lakes and Renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America," that the name be changed. The variant name, "Kaniatarí:io Lake", is a Mohawk name which translates to: "nice lake".'

tedd4u··on New Mac mini, featuring M6 and M5 Pro
Yes, the "neural accelerators" in the M5 GPU cores really do 4x pre-fill performance over M4. You can find benchmarks online since M5 has been out for months now. I assume the M6 has whatever the next-gen version of those is. These are not the "neural processors" that have been there since M1 (those still exist) but are additionl matrix math accelerators inside the actual GPU cores. Like "tensor cores" on Nvidia GPUs.
tedd4u··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
Look at the "Q4_0 Prompt" column. That's the tokens-per-second processing the initial prompt/system prompt. This is where the "neural accelerators inside each GPU core" is seen most prominently.
tedd4u··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
Agreed, seems like the M5 has already made steps in that direction, with 4x prompt processing / prefill performance vs. M4. [1] And token generation also got a 10% boost. The data below is only for Pro & Max but I think the base M5 got the same relative boosts vs. M4 base.

Chip BW (GB/s) GPU Cores Q4_0 Prompt Q4_0 Gen
    M4 Pro (20c) 273 20 439.78 50.74
    M4 Max (40c) 546 40 885.68 83.06
    M5 Pro (20c) 307 20 ~1500 to 1700 ~56
    M5 Max (40c) 614 40 ~3000 to 3500 ~92

tedd4u··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
Regarding the $25 price per GB RAM. These chips use LPDDR5X RAM. Looking at the Framework site, they are selling LPDDR5X LPCAMM2 modules for the following prices:

    16GB $239 - $15/GB
    32GB $800 - $25/GB
    64GB $1,600 - $25/GB
tedd4u··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
The RAM in the M5 is LPDDR5X, not HBM. You're right of course that it's unified and used as VRAM in that sense.
