techpression··on OpenDLSS: A Vulkan Reimplementation of Nvidia's DLSS 5 Neural Rendering Network
You are correct, I should’ve used financial not fiduciary. They make more money selling AI hardware than gaming and it’s a zero-risk transfer because if AI collapses gamers will not “vote with their wallets” and not buy a new card from NVIDIA, and they know it. And I don’t even disagree with them here, if you can make 10-100x more money doing less work, why wouldn’t you?
techpression··on OpenDLSS: A Vulkan Reimplementation of Nvidia's DLSS 5 Neural Rendering Network
I really hope they do, but the market for gaming cards is looking mighty bleak right about now. 5090 is up over 80% since November last I checked and my 5080 is up 50%. NVIDIA removing all mentions of gaming in their financials doesn’t bode well either, and from a fiduciary standpoint it would be negligent to sacrifice any capacity for higher-margin AI chips to make gaming cards.

Again, I hope I’m wrong and we see new cards summer/autumn 2027, but I would not bet my savings on it.

techpression··on The problem is not AI code, but not knowing about system architecture or intent
Very good post, thanks! You remind me of the countless times I've heard "we need to be AI native", "use AI", "pass it through AI for review".

AI has become the thing you do, and what you do it with, to achieve it. It's a self-fulfilling chicken that is an egg that is a chicken.

techpression··on Jensen Huang says AI distillation is 'competition.'
On paper, but the world isn’t constrained by such trivial matters when enough power is behind you. Although, smuggling only goes so far, obviously, it’s not like they’re not available.

techpression··on There are no "rogue" AI agents
They will never report any really damaging incidents anyway, so your argument falls short. Imagine OpenAI discovered their agents hacked a laboratory and started creating a bioagent killing 12 researchers at the lab (we imagine the lab is automated for some reason). Nobody knows why. The media publishes it as “mysterious deaths by unknown virus at lab”. The only way you’d ever know about any kind of wrongdoing from OpenAI would be through a whistleblower.

Self-reporting is a monetary equation, nothing else. Right now it’s cool with agents that hack, drives up value, risk is currently zero.

techpression··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
It can’t, it needs hundreds of thousands (if not multiple millions) of human hours spent making content for it.

Correctness is a scale, and what is correct can become incorrect with enough sliding of said scale over time.

”With that approach, we merged more than three thousand changes…” Why are they writing this? That’s terrible marketing all around, it means they let it go so far, with so little care, that they needed 3000 changes to make it into just a mediocre website performance wise (sure, electron app too, but still).

The AI labs did that to themselves. All those billions and their marketing and communication skills are like those of a local street vendor selling fake knockoffs.

GDPR is being changed to allow tracking and AI training without consent, EU only protects people if it’s the interest of EU companies, GDPR is now too costly so it has to be dismantled in certain areas.

techpression··on A heap overflow and SSO misconfiguration to compromise OpenAI internal repos
I agree, but imagemagick is kind of the worst of the bunch, graphicsmagick is a lot better and libvips significantly so. Ffmpeg primarily suffers a lot from “we need to support the video format used on a washing machine display used in 1981 and only sold ten units”. It’s quite a large vector for attacks.
techpression··on A heap overflow and SSO misconfiguration to compromise OpenAI internal repos
Because people need to spend time and money on that, which they won’t. The implementation is cheap, the review and follow-up is not (speaking from a pure LLM only workflow). My ratio is around 1:2 currently, so twice as much time spent fixing vs building.
techpression··on Let's make quality the norm again
I know it well, made me quit one job and I will never work for “it” again. Still, when they go after the dogs I get upset.
techpression··on Let's make quality the norm again
As someone who works very close to this I’m well aware, it’s also very visible when you look at trends over decades in most populations. It has significant impact on a lot of people.

AI is just another way to not use your brain, I think there’s plenty of consensus around the fact that not using your brain makes you dumber. So actually, yes you can say that definitely.

Also curious about loopholes, could said company start another company out of state that was the outsourcing entity and then the parent company paid that company. You're theoretically hiring from within the US, because I assume said policy doesn't go all the way to sub-contractors etc?

LinkedIn is up there too, the reality distortion and appearance of everyone being a self made trillionaire can make the strongest of minds feel like they’re utter failures. It’s of course not true and 90% seem to be pure bullshit, but who has time to investigate ever thought leader post they get shoved in their face
techpression··on AI handles incidents, engineers lose touch with their systems
Thank you for this, the hand waving comparisons of AI and anything else is getting out of hand on HN. Your ”like caffeine is to meth” is one of the more succinct and describing sentences I’ve seen describe the difference.
techpression··on Corporate America is getting hooked on open-source AI
There’s more to trust than training on data? Most of their products are vibe coded, bug ridden and their uptime is some of the worst in the history of services. How many IT departments let cowork run around freely?
techpression··on Corporate America is getting hooked on open-source AI
If you use OpenAI or Anthropic trust were never a requirement in the first place.
techpression··on Corporate America is getting hooked on open-source AI
Except OpenAI and Anthropic has brought in a lot of money, that with this trajectory will make it some of the worst investments in ”software” ever (if it’s true enterprise clients are actively moving away, I know we are but for other reasons).
techpression··on GPT-6 Astra
It doesn’t even know what day it is unless it’s told. Statelessness is never going to be ”general intelligence” in my book, and the concept of ”memory” in models are laughably bad today. Then again, who cares, AGI means nothing anymore, it’s a term for marketing only and has no technical or scientific meaning.

techpression··on Iceland votes on whether to restart talks on joining EU
The never ending creeping need for more power tends to have these results. EU will either collapse or become a mega state that will later collapse, the problem is mostly that people view things in terms of elections, but downfall happens during much longer periods of time.
