Velvet Underground anyone? Slightly less successful.
technotarek··on Replacing jQuery (110kb) With UmbrellaJS (8kb)
Although this shouldn't detract from the author's specific situation and choice, I think a big share of those using jQuery are those who are also using a development framework that is dependent upon it ==> e.g., Twitter Bootstrap (ver 5 and below). That could be an interesting project -- a drop in replacement for TBS' jQuery dependency.
technotarek··on A fuel spill from the U.S. Navy poisons the water of thousands in Hawaiʻi
Reverse osmosis creates something like 4 to 6 parts waste for every one part of filtered water. It doesn’t seem sustainable or responsible on scale.

technotarek··on A fuel spill from the U.S. Navy poisons the water of thousands in Hawaiʻi
I don’t have a citation ready for this, but I recall reading that reverse osmosis creates something like 4 to 6 parts waste for every one part of filtered water. If that’s correct, it doesn’t seem sustainable or responsible on scale.

Edit: adding potential reliable source: https://inspectapedia.com/septic/RO_Waste_in_Septic_Systems....

technotarek··on Balcony solar panels – one-year results
Solar generally pays off if your state/municipality offers SRECs and you get the Federal tax credit. In some places, like Washington DC, it goes as far being lucrative fast. My entire system will be paid off in under 5 years. After that, no electricity bills plus SREC income for another 10+ years.
technotarek··on We handle 80TB and 5M page views a month for under $400
We have an incredibly similar stack for attic.city, aside from the application layer. We lean heavily on CF (edge caching, Argo and page rules). But we’ve recently changed our image assets from S3 to CF R2. Anyone else put that side by side with Bunny?
technotarek··on Google no longer producing high quality search results in significant categories
To all those hating on affiliate marketing and how google is ruining the internet as a place for reliable product research, I propose a different take. Affiliate marketing is actually a way to fund product research and testing. The problem is those that currently pay out are too few. Imagine if all products/sellers provided a potential payout equally on par with one another? Then you could help protect against the bias that leads to only Amazon and Walmart stocked reviews. To boot, you create incentives to shop from a wider scope of vendors and marketplaces.

We do affiliate marketing on ATTIC.city that we believe is honest and fair. We let every product on, from almost any vendor (that we can technically support), regardless of whether we have a commission agreement. Our search results always give the best match that we can for your query. Period.

technotarek··on Anti-mimetic tactics for living a counter-cultural life
Coming from a public policy perspective and background, I don’t see it that way. Rather that’s simply how some have chosen to frame it (and some like yourself have come to accept it).
technotarek··on Anti-mimetic tactics for living a counter-cultural life
This was one of my favorite recent reads.

The most tangible tech related thing it made me think about is Google News. There are reasons to dislike the service (or the beast behind it), but at the end of the day, it’s a great way to help break your own personal political ethos bubble. Read the headlines of CNN right next to FOX. Consider the angles. On that point, I’d love to find a non-FAANG alternative that does the aggregation as well as Google. Anyone have suggestions?

Separately, I will quibble with this:

“ I’ve never understood why the debate our education has focused so heavily on the type of school (private, public, parochial, charter, etc.). Shouldn’t we be more concerned about the quality of education?”

He’s grossly glossing over the socio-economic subtleties. Those ARE ultimately meant to be debates about quality — and about how quality education can be delivered at mass, fairly and justly.

technotarek··on Counting website visitors is hard
The advice I give more and more to my clients is to stop focusing on absolute numbers. Instead, pick a decent analytics package and use it to monitor changes over time. Focus on the relative, not the absolute. (You still need to be careful to make sure your changes over time aren’t because of an increase/decrease in bots.)

Similarly, focus on a few core metrics and don’t go down the rabbit hole that something like GoogleAnalytics tends to compel. Usually those metrics are a few basics (uniques) plus a small number of domain/operation specific conversion metrics.

technotarek··on Packaging for instant coffee made out of seaweed
FYI, there is a current option. We use Woken brand pods for a nespresso machine. Fully compostable. I’m not a coffee connoisseur, but I think they’re way better than Keurig (sp?).
technotarek··on What happens to developers who never go into management?
I’ll add, in most cases I’m probably describing an app with incredible technical debt, but that’s not at all unusual in the real world, especially in non tech industries.
technotarek··on What happens to developers who never go into management?
I’ll offer a 5th — a twist on the legacy developer that is the opposite of the described. On an enterprise app for a smaller business, you’ll find that a legacy developer is one of few, if not the only, who fully understands the app, it’s architecture from A to Z and the data model from top to bottom. Thus, they are incredibly valuable. In the right role, they continue to tinker without being a manager and more junior devs handle the rote.
technotarek··on Do you ever avoid submitting something on HN so devs won't ruin it?
Yes, but usually because of imposter syndrome more than anything.
technotarek··on We need more boutique search engines
Attic.city was developed and is run with less than one FTE (two part time founders). Definitely boutique — home and fashion products from indie stores in the US — and thereby manageable both in terms of labor and the stack. We’re growing incrementally. Lately the focus has been on internal tooling and progressively automated health/status metrics.

technotarek··on Uranium Glass
For a rather wide variety of uranium glass objects: https://attic.city/search/usa/Uranium

FYI, Attic is our niche search engine for goods from small, independent businesses. You’re not gonna find much Uranium glass from the likes of Home Depot, Amazon or Walmart :)

technotarek··on How to Build a Low-Tech Solar Panel?
My father and I built a solar powered dog house heater in the 80s. We got the idea and plans from a Detroit area newspaper. The “cell” was simply plywood painted black behind a piece of glass with room in between for air movement. It successfully raised a fully sealed box (perhaps almost 1sq meter) to 40 deg C in the dead of Michigan winter. It also got me a blue ribbon at the science fair. I’ve been intrigued by solar power ever since, but only in terms of tracking the science progress.
technotarek··on My Job Offer Was Rescinded After I’d Given Notice
My $0.02, something that has taken me a long time to accept: never burn bridges.
technotarek··on My House
We’ve done it throughout many parts of our house for sound insulation. Apparently it works best when you use two slightly different pieces of thickness. Not sure if that’s why it was done in this case though. It doesn’t seem like the best choice for thermal insulation.
technotarek··on Pacaso is turning houses into corporations
Wasn’t there a show HN for a YC startup with the same idea earlier this week?
technotarek··on Tips for Better Signup / Login UX
I’ve always assumed this was a reserved character escaping issue that a dev didn’t want to tackle.
technotarek··on Show HN: Pageturner – a community for building a reading habit
This seems a bit extreme. Is anything that is incentivized bad? Charitable giving? Putting solar on your house? Obviously those are monetary incentives, but goosing desired behaviors with incentives of any form kind of makes the world go round (or at least it would seem so when you're a father of a young child!).
technotarek··on Show HN: Pageturner – a community for building a reading habit
I haven't, but will likely give it a try when I get back on the reading (books) horse. I wish it weren't owned by Amazon. de-FAANGing is too hard!
technotarek··on Show HN: Pageturner – a community for building a reading habit
This immediately caught my attention. I wouldn't say I'm a book lover (at this very moment). Rather, I used to be a veracious book reader, but then life, social media and the Internet got in the way. I'm lucky if I read one full length novel per year now. I regret that and have been actively wanting to regain my former interest/habit. Your site could help. But here's what I was expecting/hoping to find when I clicked through...something that would help me discover new books. After looking at the first several posts, all I saw were non-fiction, business-focused books. Is there a way to hone in on fiction and specific sub-genres? If I can easily see what, for example, other people who like science fiction are reading right now and actively discussing, then I've got a starting point. Further, I know where to go back to when I pick up that book and want to share my own thoughts.

I really like the premise/idea as whole. Good luck.

technotarek··on OpenStreetMap proven to be a highly accurate map in top US cities
Can anyone recommend an OSM based turn-by-turn, iOS app that is CarPlay compatible?
technotarek··on Venice combats overtourism by tracking visitors
As someone who has had the opportunity to go, I would gladly accept the tracking / privacy intrusion for a short visit. Well worth it IMHO, and happy to support making travel to these sort of rare gems more sustainable and possibly even more enjoyable. My pro tip: go in the winter. You’ll have the place mostly to yourself.

technotarek··on Show HN: Pluto – macOS system monitor app
Slightly off topic, but fully related. Has anyone ever noticed that when your CPU is spiking on a Mac, simply opening Activity Monitor often brings it in check? Please tell me I haven’t fabricated this correlation! I’ve noticed it on several generations of MBA’s, with the 2020 Intel as the most recent.
technotarek··on Ten year study: No link between violent video games and aggressive behavior
Just speculating: While there may not be a link with aggressive behavior, might there be greater ambivalence toward it?
technotarek··on EU to unveil landmark law curbing power of tech giants
Well, I wasn't taking the OP's idea to mean only splitting off the crawler. Why not an API where you send it the search query and then it returns the results? It could have a variety of return options including using a ranking of the API publisher's choosing or you could ask for something raw, and innovate with an even better or more suitable ranking based on your specific needs.

In the end, the point would be to make Google closer to what it was at the beginning -- just input and output. No ads on top of it, no bundling with other offerings etc. And if the publisher's ranking remains as good as it should, then surely some will be willing to pay not only for the raw data, but the ranking as well.
