tech-historian··on Claude build me the History of Humanity
This is really cool. Bravo! Fun to explore all around.

Only feedback I have is very minor. Some map dots seem to be cities, rather than events. Though, perhaps it is the founding of those cities? I'm looking at Mississauga, Quinte West, Kawartha Lakes, etc (in Canada). However, looking deeper, this does make a lot of sense for bigger cities, and as I scroll the timeline -- this is useful! I guess it's a judgement call on how big of a city to include.

Excellent work on this.

tech-historian··on Show HN: 18 Words
100% agree. Casual mode would be a winner.
tech-historian··on Hacker News front page as a site
I've noticed that Claude always defaults to really small text. They need to train readability into it.
tech-historian··on Talking to strangers at the gym
Somewhat related: Patrick Winston's famous MIT How to Speak lecture. He's been giving this talk for 4 decades

tech-historian··on Apple picks Gemini to power Siri
Is Apple silicon really that impressive compared to LLMs? Take a step back. CPUs have been getting faster and more efficient for decades.

Google invented the transformer architecture, the backbone of modern LLMs.

tech-historian··on Correcting the record for Continue and PearAI
They also lied about having 100+ contributors to PearAI.
tech-historian··on Sonos draws more customer anger – this time for its privacy policy
> A reassuring line that said Sonos ‘does not and will not sell personal information’ has disappeared [from their privacy policy]

The crux of the issue. How value is customer data really? I know very little about this.

How much influence did Teenage Engineering have on this product? Did TE just design the physical aspects only?

Interesting to see an entire article based on an HN comment [0] from the CEO.

tech-historian··on Show HN: Convert the Internet into your own API in seconds
Very cool. Tried it out, it works!
tech-historian··on Potato Diet Riff Trial: Sign Up Now, Lol
A diet that you can follow forever is called a lifestyle. For many diets and many people, it's really hard to convert into a lifestyle, because the of the restrictions and predictable cravings.

Side note, there's a thing called the Potato Hack [0] that proposes 3-5 day potato-only diets for short term fixes. A "potato fast" if you will.

tech-historian··on Potato Diet Riff Trial: Sign Up Now, Lol
I just read thousands of words about a potato-based diet on that website. Didn't think my Tuesday was gonna start that way, but here we are. HN is amazing.
tech-historian··on Potato Diet Riff Trial: Sign Up Now, Lol
Keeping my eyes peeled on this. Really fascinating.
tech-historian··on Version Museum: A Visual History of Your Favorite Technology
Creator of the site here. Thanks for posting! I've been meaning to update things with newer screenshots. Life gets in the way sometimes.
tech-historian··on Apple’s failure to build a key part for its new iPhones
> I'm sure they'll get there in another year or so.

Unlikely, if you read the article.

tech-historian··on Apple’s failure to build a key part for its new iPhones
From the article: "Modem chips are trickier to make than processing chips because they must work seamlessly with 5G wireless networks, as well as the 2G, 3G and 4G networks used in countries around the world, each with its own technological quirks. Apple microprocessors run software programs designed solely for its iPhones and laptops."

Also: "[Apple's modem] chips were essentially three years behind Qualcomm’s best modem chip. Using them threatened to make iPhone wireless speeds slower than its competitors."

Brilliant! I hadn't seen that one, thank you!
tech-historian··on Carrefour puts ‘shrinkflation’ price warnings on food to shame brands
This phenomenon generally cracks me up, where you see random (to me) english phrases sprinkled throughout foreign languages. SNL leaned into this, in a skit with Pedro Pascal speaking spanish.

tech-historian··on Unity is offering a runtime fee waiver if you switch to LevelPlay
TFA mentions "UA platform" several times but doesn't mention what that means. Can someone enlighten me? Google isn't disambiguating things much either. Thx!
tech-historian··on Announcing the Pollen API
Fan of these interesting APIs, even if they feel experimental. Google also used to have a Flu Trends API [1], based on search query data in 25 countries.

tech-historian··on Southwest cancels 5,400 flights in less than 48 hours
Sounds nostalgic and all, but the temp was near 0 in many places throughout the US. Not a fun time to be sleeping in the back of a U-Haul truck.
tech-historian··on Ask HN: What is the most impactful thing you've built?
That's very kind of you to ask!

There is the Buy Me a Coffee page, where you can donate if you like. Thank you!

tech-historian··on Ask HN: What is the most impactful thing you've built?
Probably the thing I feel best about is the museum I made with my son that educates people about how older versions of websites, operating systems, and apps used to look:

I don't want people to forget our "technology heritage," if that makes sense.

tech-historian··on Musk plans to eliminate half of Twitter jobs to cut costs
Does WhatsApp have a global ad sales team? Sales is generally a large portion of the workforce in a large-ish media company.
tech-historian··on Musk plans to eliminate half of Twitter jobs to cut costs
Well, Twitter's no longer public so they won't benefit from any long term stock price appreciation. I wonder if there's any other bonus structure in place, or if Elon plans to cut everything to the bone.
tech-historian··on Charts.css: CSS data visualization framework
D3 could be the right tool for this. When I first used D3 years ago, it seemed so incredibly overkill. But maybe it's just right for something like this project, with these specific requirements.
