tdsamardzhiev··on Peter the Great’s Beard Tax
Our part of Europe is... special.
tdsamardzhiev··on California sues Activision Blizzard over unequal pay, sexual harassment
Most regular people don't try to cover up sexual harassment.
tdsamardzhiev··on Jeff Bezos’ Dystopian Legacy Goes Far Beyond Amazon
Not if the alternative to working for Amazon is, well, death by starvation. People say communism falls apart once subjects stop having reasonably similar goals. Market economy is certainly more resistant to this, but is it infinitely more resistant? How far can we push inequality before that becomes an issue?

Edit: That was meant as a response to the parent comment.

tdsamardzhiev··on How to Become a Bad Developer
I've worked with some great programmers who check all the boxes. It gets harder and harder to have a reasonable discussion about programming as some generic type of activity.
tdsamardzhiev··on Sublime Text 4
Everything opens instantly on M1. Enjoy it while software hasn't slowed down accordingly.
tdsamardzhiev··on Racket 8.1
I remember a time when people could take being called a "doofus" without starting a smear campaign.
tdsamardzhiev··on Blizzard has lost almost 29% of its overall active playerbase in three years
A popular esports caster said the following a few days ago, and it really got stuck in my head:

> "We can't have new games like Brood War anymore, because devs would patch out everything that's fun about it in a few days."

Please get the designers away from the spreadsheets and in a game. Trade some of that polish away for a soul. Delegate more responsibility to junior people, instead of forging them into (strictly inferior) clones of the senior staff.

tdsamardzhiev··on Cars are about to be a software platform, subscriptions and all
All the manufacturers will seek innovative ways to milk users, and whenever any of them succeeds, all the rest will follow suit.
tdsamardzhiev··on Cars are about to be a software platform, subscriptions and all
Never understood people complaining of radio ads until I got to hear what American radio is like. They legit play ads after almost every song. Yikes!

I'm willing to go further. My parents' microwave has a single knob, and mine has two but I have never used it at something other than "High".
tdsamardzhiev··on Answer from the umn concerning its ban from Linux
Dear UMN folks, please just shut up and do as you're told. This is the best course of action for recovering your image in the eyes of both the FOSS community and the general public.
tdsamardzhiev··on Beginner’s guide to mechanical keyboards
I like pressing the switches. No mush. Feels good. That's all there is to it, in my experience. Compared to my laptop, it makes zero difference with regards to typing speed and arthritis. But yeah, I like it.
tdsamardzhiev··on When Myanmar needs ProtonVPN the most, Apple stands in the way of human rights
There is a reasonable middle ground, but all of Big Tech has gone way beyond that, Apple included.
tdsamardzhiev··on Living Like It's 99, No Social Media, No Smartphone
People are different. Perhaps he tends to go down slippery slopes with this kind of things. I know I do.
tdsamardzhiev··on AstraZeneca vaccine safe and effective in U.S., Chile, Peru trials
Edit: Ah, I see -- you mean the last line in flexie's comment. Alright, it was either added after I read it, or I somehow managed to miss it.
tdsamardzhiev··on AstraZeneca vaccine safe and effective in U.S., Chile, Peru trials
Blame? On the contrary, he went the extra mile to explain why it was the right decision for Denmark, but mindlessly copying it was NOT the right decision for Bulgaria, and people died because of it. Acting like our govt did is a very Bulgarian thing, we even have a saying for it -- "The frog saw they're shoeing the horse and raised her foot."
tdsamardzhiev··on M1 MacBook Air hits 900 GFlops in the browser with Safari's experimental WebGPU
Electron blows my mind every time I open Activity Monitor. How on the Earth does Spotify manage to use 2GB RAM and 48 threads for a music player?!
tdsamardzhiev··on Dear Moon – Space crew applications open
I'm concerned that a failure will greatly hurt the progress of spaceflight and the public opinion of it. Other than that.. well, we got 8 billion people laying around, all of us are going to die, and there are very few more glorious ways to do it than spaceflight.
tdsamardzhiev··on Tibor Gánti's ideas about the origins of life
The Earth is a triangle.
tdsamardzhiev··on Cyberpunk 2077: How 2020’s biggest video game launch turned into a shambles
Honestly, with both CP and TW1/2/3, I feel that if they scrapped the “numbers RPG” elements, they would’ve had significantly better games on their hands.
tdsamardzhiev··on Cyberpunk 2077: How 2020’s biggest video game launch turned into a shambles
Agreed. Youtubers talk about the bad stuff in CP because that generates the most clicks, and people who haven’t played the game get the idea that it’s like Anthem. Meanwhile, most PC players are 20+ hours in (On average! In a week!) and having a blast.
tdsamardzhiev··on Cyberpunk 2077: How 2020’s biggest video game launch turned into a shambles
Maybe that’s just how people talk in ‘77 Night City.
tdsamardzhiev··on EU pushes for 'right to disconnect' from work at home
The juniors won’t be fired either, but they don’t know that and usually get abused because of it.

If a company expects you to crunch, that means there’s too much work. If there’s too much work, it’s extremely unlikely that somebody doing a decent job would be fired.

tdsamardzhiev··on State of Common Lisp Survey 2020
Quite fitting for a LISP survey.
tdsamardzhiev··on Ask HN: Top Coursera Courses?
I think Dan Grossman's Programming Languages courses are amazing if you have slept through the subject in university: https://www.coursera.org/learn/programming-languages
tdsamardzhiev··on Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla and the Unfortunate Implications
Fun-centrism certainly helps if you're making something that (1) targets mainstream audience and (2) takes 50+ hours to finish.
tdsamardzhiev··on Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla and the Unfortunate Implications
You're supposed to see the world through the memories of a 9th century Viking (who also happens to be a great figure of the Nordic mythology), of course the invasion of England will be portrayed in a positive light and Anglo-Saxons would be seen as inferior people. It's a Triple-A game featuring gods, diverse Vikings, and a dude with an axe in his head; if one takes it as a reputable historical source, I say the problem is them, not the game (although IMHO there's many things wrong with the game in general).

Anyway, perhaps it's a fair point to make if your blog is called "A Collection of Unmitigated Pedantry"...

tdsamardzhiev··on Ask HN: Are you depressed?
My observation is that most smart people are very prone to depression if they stop and think about stuff. And yeah, the ongoing global pandemic, social isolation and economical crisis isn’t making that any better.
tdsamardzhiev··on Charles Darwin’s hunch about early life was probably right
I'd argue that by now The Bomb has saved way more people than it has killed (no WW3, etc).

And that's not even counting the other achievements of the Manhattan Project, such as the first artificial nuclear reactor.

tdsamardzhiev··on Charles Darwin’s hunch about early life was probably right
Um, that's how science works. It's an effort to explain the world. Everything is a theory, nothing is final. Some theories (evolution, gravity) are more credible/developed than others.
