tbrock··on OpenBSD 7.0
Things are where you’d expect, patterns and conventions cary on throughout the system, etc… Vs the disjoint feeling linux has.
tbrock··on How I built a modern website in 2021
All i humorously get is:

500 - Oh no, something did not go well.

"/blog/how-i-built-a-modern-website-in-2021" is currently not working. So sorry.

tbrock··on The Framework is the most exciting laptop I've used
He lost a little bit of credibility saying the Macbooks have terrible build quality… compared to a thinkpad they are on par or better, compared to everything else they are head and shoulders above.
tbrock··on Reining in the thundering herd: Getting to 80% CPU utilization with Django
Aside: AWS only allows registering 1000 targets in a target group… i wonder if thats the limit they hit. If so, its documented.
tbrock··on My Fanless OpenBSD Desktop
Why not just get an M1 macbook air? Its likely more performant, also has no fan, runs bsd, whats not to like?

You could probably one day replace MacOS with openbsd if you wanted.

tbrock··on An app for M1 Macs that plays the sound of a fan as CPU usage goes up
I dont understand why they sell the pro. The touchbar is rubbish and the air has 99% the same performance. Yeah the pro can go faster for longer without throttle but its heavier and doesnt have those physical f-keys.

Its more expensive too… not sure why anyone would buy it over the air. Two more usb-c but you can only hook in one external monitor! Also 200 more nits on screen but… is it really that important?

I cant wait for the 14/16 with the m1x. These are already barn burners.

tbrock··on Podswap: Keep airpods alive and out of the landfill
Apple is the only laptop manufacturer that even gets close to 1000 cycles of great battery life.
tbrock··on Show HN: I Debian-packaged my Wiki Server
I tried to package something on debian many years ago before and gave up.

Apparently there were two sets of tools and I never could find good documentation on the “modern tools” or make sense of the docs for the older tools.

I wonder if the station has gotten better.

tbrock··on The 'Fuck You' Pattern
Thats just advertising! I dont work at facebook but i also wasnt born yesterday. Give people a taste so they want to sign up. That doesn't make them evil any more than a movie trailer makes hollywood evil.
tbrock··on The 'Fuck You' Pattern
Im not sure why this person would expect to see the content while logged out. Shrug.

Its part of a social network, if everyone was lurking it would just be a bunch of creepers. The product shows who viewed a post/story/reel etc and can't do that if you arent logged in.

tbrock··on Avoiding Complexity with Systemd
This should be part of the manual. Ive tried multiple times to understand systemd deeper than a service restart here and looking at logs for a unit there to no avail.
tbrock··on Nixos-unstable’s ISO_minimal.x86_64-Linux is 100% reproducible
Why does building from source help? It’s not like people are reading every line of the source before building it anyway 99.99% of the time.
tbrock··on Ask HN: What huge mistake did you make early in your career?
What do you know now that you wish you knew then?
tbrock··on I wrote a children's book / illustrated guide to Apache Kafka
The penguin in this one is nightmare fuel
tbrock··on Apple M1 support for TensorFlow 2.5 pluggable device API
I consider myself a novice but competent python programmer (not particularly skilled or expert) and everytime i have to use something made in python i cringe because i know it will require 30 minutes of futzing with things to even run it.

Python’s ecosystem is the worst for get-up-and-go usage.

Nvm or nodenv make managing node environments trivial compared to virtualenv, pip, and co. Same with rustup or rbenv… in fact python is the only language i have the problem with.

tbrock··on Logical replication and decoding for Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL
We get data into BigQuery from pg using a custom airflow plugin but recently started doing something similar on AWS with DMS to get data from postgres -> redshift.

DMS is awesome. No code is the best code. Big query is great but not having a “snap-your-fingers and the data is there” connector makes it a PITA for me to maintain.

As a result… we are using more redshift.

tbrock··on The Apple M1 compiles Linux 30% faster than my Intel i9
When they make the desktop pro version its going to slap. This is a 15 watt part! You may not care about efficiency so then wait and see what the desktop part looks like.
tbrock··on The Apple M1 compiles Linux 30% faster than my Intel i9
I don't think you realize how far ahead the M1 actually is... it's about processing power per watt. The desktop you used actually 1) has a fan 2) is probably consuming many more than 15 watts 3) would burn my lap if it was anywhere near it.

The implications are huge. Think about the competitive advantage a data center that operated with no cooling requirements and much lower power requirements would be if it got the same (or better!) performance than an equivalent intel based one.

It's not just faster, its faster than equivalent parts AND way more efficient.

tbrock··on SunBook – Sunlight Readable Netbook (2014)
At the bottom:

> IMPORTANT NOTE: SunBook is no longer available because the Pixel Qi transflective LCDs are no longer made.

tbrock··on Ask HN: What are some tools / libraries you built yourself?
I wrote a tool to tail CloudWatch logs called saw: http://github.com/TylerBrock/saw

I was so fed up trying to debug lambdas and the other AWS offerings that a tool like this to see program output in near realtime is indispensable. I use it all the time.

Is it bug free? No

Did i write tests for it? Also no.

Is it useful? Yes.

tbrock··on Using PostgreSQL as a Data Warehouse
> ensure you're not I/O-bound

The biggest thing holding me back from using pg as a data warehouse is RDS not having support for instances with ephemeral drives / cost for PIOPS.

I need 100s of thousands of iops not thousands.

tbrock··on Praise for Alpine Linux
Do they publish an image thats suitable for a docker base?

I wonder why alpine became he defacto super slim base image over void?

tbrock··on Rust for Windows 0.9
Why is microsoft posting this / working on this rather than the rust project itself?
tbrock··on Back in 1993, I was taking a number theory class
The name of the program was "At Ease". It had two big folders with icons that looked very much like a precursor to iOS's springboard we know today.

The two folders were labeled "Applications" and "Documents": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/At_Ease

You could also trigger the NMI via Apple key + power button and I remember the magic code to set the memory to zero and crash finder being: SM<space>0<space>A964<return>G<space>O<return>

tbrock··on Tiny Container Challenge: Building a 6kB Containerized HTTP Server
The golang example where he uses scratch as the base image is essentially this.
tbrock··on Auth0 Is Down in US and Canada
The service itself has been down over an hour for us currently... not great. Just blew more than a years worth of downtime at four nines.
tbrock··on Auth0 Down
Still down for us... 12:49pm (more than 1 hour after starting)
tbrock··on Visual Studio 2022
I’ve tried to like the JetBrains stuff (especially Clion) but I just have never gotten to the point where I love it.
tbrock··on Coinbase from YC to DPO
I know I’ll probably get banned for calling this out but I find it disgusting that silicon valley was crucifying Brian Armstrong for his “no politics at work” stance but now everyone is back to kissing the ring now that he’s made everyone and their grandma millions of dollars.
tbrock··on M1 dev setup with a virtual Linux box
This is why running something like VSCode on your Mac with the remote ssh dev setup is the best of all worlds.

https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/remote/remote-overview

Virtualized Linux on x86 AND being able to run VSCode on your Mac for great fonts, WiFi, screen etc without having to fuss with drivers.

Of course ssh and tmux also work well for this purpose.
