tboyd47··on Porn censorship is going to destroy the internet
It’s there because the ones in charge want it there.
tboyd47··on Porn censorship is going to destroy the internet
Sorry, but what on the internet is not already censored?
tboyd47··on Younger Canadians feel homeownership pressure on par with marriage and children
There are societal pressures to have marriage and children? I thought the pressure was to not do that.
tboyd47··on Training language models to be warm and empathetic makes them less reliable
> Anyways, the point apropos this thread is that whatever innate behaviors and responses humans are genetically predisposed could could equally well be made innate to an AI.

Could be, but they won't be. Because the people making the AIs don't know much about empathy for other people. I hope I'm wrong.

tboyd47··on Training language models to be warm and empathetic makes them less reliable
No. Empathy is feeling what the person is feeling exactly the same way as if it happened to you. You really have to have already gone through something like what the person is going through. That’s why it’s so rare. What you’re describing is more like sociopathy.
tboyd47··on Training language models to be warm and empathetic makes them less reliable
If everything boils down to emotional states, then being empathetic just becomes, "I made the other person feel this emotion," i.e. sychophancy and flattery.
tboyd47··on Training language models to be warm and empathetic makes them less reliable
Your reply indicates that you don't know the difference between empathy and sycophancy either.
tboyd47··on Training language models to be warm and empathetic makes them less reliable
Fascinating. My gut tells me this touches on a basic divergence between human beings and AI, and would be a fruitful area of further research. Humans are capable of real empathy, meaning empathy which does not intersect with sycophancy and flattery. For machines, empathy always equates to sycophancy and flattery.
tboyd47··on Ask HN: What tech skill gave you the biggest boost in your career?
You guys downvoted me, but if you can swiftly untangle your own code from someone else's code, you cut out a lot of confusion and long meetings. Maybe you guys like meetings.
tboyd47··on Ask HN: What tech skill gave you the biggest boost in your career?
Git
tboyd47··on They Let Their Children Cross the Street and Now They're Felons
I guess the NY Times is too chicken to say it outright, but this prosecution looks racially motivated. He was crossing the street with his brother and the driver who struck the child was not charged. (Cue comments about the technicalities of jaywalking)
tboyd47··on In Defense of Describable Dating Preferences
I've been on dating apps for the past 3 months (ladies of HN, you heard right), including the "marriage apps" within the Muslim community (it's the same basic product). I suspect being Muslim, white, over 35, and not a doctor filters out about 99.99% of women who I might be compatible with. I have chosen not to describe my ideal partner at all for this reason. I'm already pre-filtered to an extreme. Limping along as it is with an eye-patch and two bum legs, why handicap myself even more?
tboyd47··on We're Still Underestimating What AI Means
Principle of parsimony strikes again.
tboyd47··on H-1B program grew 81 percent from 2011 to 2022
Yep. If anything, it depresses the economy. Doesn't grow anything except the stock price of multinationals.
tboyd47··on H-1B program grew 81 percent from 2011 to 2022
Exactly. It's a very cynical and corrupt game being passed off in the name of "innovation" and "competiton" XD
tboyd47··on H-1B program grew 81 percent from 2011 to 2022
Exactly. It's not about talent at all. It's about using the strong arm of the government to give large multinationals an advantage in the tech market. Total grift and corruption!
tboyd47··on H-1B program grew 81 percent from 2011 to 2022
I'm all for importing top talent to work at American companies. In fact, I think H1-Bs should be allowed to start businesses and move from job to job like anyone else. If it's about innovation, why force them to stay in one job while they're here?
tboyd47··on Ask HN: How can I make 0,1M dollars?
Get two jobs, get roommates to share costs, eat ramen noodles, grind it out for a couple of years, make smart investments.
tboyd47··on Measles 'out of control,' experts warn, as Alberta case counts surpass 1k
Nowadays "cases" just means a positive test result, even if repeated on the same person. It does not mean sick or dying individuals.
tboyd47··on They tried Made in the USA – it was too expensive for their customers
You only get to pick one: labor laws or a manufacturing industry.
tboyd47··on If AI Lets Us Do More in Less Time–Why Not Shorten the Workweek?
It would lead to people having more free time, which leads to self-determination and independence from corporate power structures, which empowers the middle class, which the owners and controllers of global financialized capital do not want.

Your job will continue to be at least 40 hours, the base pay adjusted for inflation will decrease, the "benefits" that are too complicated to understand and extract yourself from will increase, and you definitely will come back into the office one day. =)

tboyd47··on Philadelphia Transit System Votes to Cut Service by 45%, Hike Fares
True.
tboyd47··on Philadelphia Transit System Votes to Cut Service by 45%, Hike Fares
The person who downvoted me has obviously never visited the continent of Asia
tboyd47··on Philadelphia Transit System Votes to Cut Service by 45%, Hike Fares
The solution is obvious as it is practiced in the rest of the world. Motorcycles.
tboyd47··on Germany and Italy pressed to bring $245B of gold home from US
Law of the jungle
tboyd47··on I counted all of the yurts in Mongolia using machine learning
Keeping an eye on the steppe nomads is always a good idea.
tboyd47··on Dull Men’s Club
If he doesn't feel comfortable to name his abuser, I won't step forward to do it. It's his tale to tell.
tboyd47··on Dull Men’s Club
> But after my kids were born I noticed something: my kids loved my voice, they listened to every sentence I made, they laughed at my quirky jokes I made and they loved when I sang to them or I brought them to the park or to the nursery and when I sat them on my neck. My wife took all that from me though, so now I need to fight to get my kids back.

You call yourself dull, but this short comment revealed the opposite picture. Kids are a lot more authentic than adults. Clearly they found a lot to enjoy about you.

> My wife took all that from me though, so now I need to fight to get my kids back.

There's an intense amount of suffering and courage in this statement which you tried to present in such a deadpan, flippant way.

> So I don't care any more what others think of me. I came to accept my dullness and embraced it. If it bores others, I don't care.

That's good, but I don't think you're actually dull or boring. Someone put that in your head and you accepted it.

tboyd47··on Ergonomic Desk Height Calculator
I put in my height of 6'0" and this is the advice I received:

> Chair height: 18 - 19.5 in > Your thighs and feet should be parallel to the floor (thighs and lower legs forming 90°-110° angle). > Desk height: 27.5 - 30.5 in > Your elbows and forearms should lie straight on the table. Make sure there is a 90°-110° angle at the elbow.

I'd love to see the math on how this works out. Pretty sure this is humanly impossible unless my upper arm happened to be about 9 inches long.
