tbodt··on Google details new 24-hour process to sideload unverified Android apps
> “For a lot of people in the world, their phone is their only computer, and it stores some of their most private information,” Samat said.

Not applying the policy to adb installs makes a lot more sense if the people this is trying to protect don't have a computer

tbodt··on Comparing Fuchsia components and Linux containers [video]
I work on Starnix and I've never heard of anything meant to replace it. What are you talking about?
tbodt··on Toki Pona: an attempted universal language with only ~120 words
I have a direct answer: once you get good enough at toki pona to want to distinguish, you do some personal reflection about what a friend is to you and find more specific ways to say that, such as jan poka (accompanying person) or jan mi (my person). You can also specify whether jan li pona tawa mi (good to me) or li pona tawa kulupu (good to the broader community).
tbodt··on Toki Pona: an attempted universal language with only ~120 words
Lots of little mistakes, here's an accurate back translation

I love Toki Pona. I've been speaking it from a short time. You can see my vehicle at https://www.youtube.com/@janPolijan. Toki Pona is good for fun conversation, but it doesn't have a lot of talking or ways of talking. Its sounds are nice and few. The toki pona community is growing the language. People do a lot of talking and have fun conversations. But toki pona is good for thinking in because of it and is fun for the mind. You'll be able to talk a lot in Toki Pona in the future. You'll be able to say large things. But you won't want to talk about transportation technology in Toki Pona. People talk in about big knowledge gadgets in book vehicles. [lol] Toki Pona is small, but it's fun and can say a lot of things.

Much closer
tbodt··on Toki Pona: an attempted universal language with only ~120 words
I would definitely not attempt to translate something like that in one shot - I'd read it and digest it for a bit and come up with a way to say the same thing without being unnecessarily obtuse, Thing Explainer style. mi nanpa e mute ijo la kipisi ijo li ken ala lon. ijo wan sin li kama la mi suli wan e nanpa. taso mi ken ala suli kipisi e nanpa. nanpa pi mute ijo la ni li ken ala: ijo tu en kipisi pi ijo wan li lon. taso mi nanpa e suli ijo la kipisi nanpa ale li ken. ijo li kama suli sin pi kipisi wan la mi ken suli pi kipisi wan e nanpa. kipisi li ken lili ale. nasin nanpa ni li ken nanpa e suli ijo e suli tenpo e suli seli. nanpa pi suli ijo la ni li ken: mi sitelen e nanpa la sitelen ni li ken nanpa ni taso li sama ala sitelen pi nanpa ante. taso nanpa mute la sitelen ona li suli ale li ken ala pini. GPT3 doesn't translate this very well, it seems to miss the fine points of grammar, but maybe GPT4 would do better
tbodt··on Toki Pona: an attempted universal language with only ~120 words
As an experienced toki pona speaker, this list is amusing because most of this is either a pointless terrible idea or already valid and accepted - somehow with very little in between. I'll leave it to the next commenter to go point by point.
tbodt··on Stable Diffusion 2 Depth Guided model: architecture photos from dollhouse
Beyond what you described there is a weird clause in paragraph 7:

7. Updates and Runtime Restrictions. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Licensor reserves the right to restrict (remotely or otherwise) usage of the Model in violation of this License, update the Model through electronic means, or modify the Output of the Model based on updates. *You shall undertake reasonable efforts to use the latest version of the Model.*

I think this means it is now illegal to use SD 1 if at all reasonably possible to use SD 2?

tbodt··on Ancient grammatical puzzle solved after 2,500 years
Panini's grammar describes Sanskrit syntax and morphology, and it's structured much like a typical parser generator grammar, except written in a heavily abbreviated form of Sanskrit instead of a programming language. In fact it's the first formal grammar in recorded history of any language, and western linguists studying it is arguably is the reason we have the concept of a formal grammar. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A%E1%B9%A3%E1%B9%AD%C4%81dhy%C...

In the Hacker News language game I think this comment delivered without sarcasm would be much better received.
tbodt··on We became experts on Google Play Store policy violations
I suspect it is actually an army of underpaid contractors, and that the inconsistency is a result of each flag and update getting looked at by a different contractor.

tbodt··on Never trust a system that seems to be working
There are plenty, but you may have to turn on showdead and scroll to the bottom and uncollapse to see them.
tbodt··on Never trust a system that seems to be working
I did a quick search on the comments page for "he"+"him" and found nothing referring to foone, and was about to congratulate HN for getting it right, and then thought to scroll to the bottom of the page and found a dozen dead/autocollapsed comments, most including the wrong pronouns. At least they're where they belong.
tbodt··on Proxy Chrome extensions are not going to be usable in MV3
If chunks of functionality are missing from MV3 with no available alternative, if the replacement is really at such an early stage of development like this, it would be silly not to delay mandatory adoption by another year or two. (Including requiring new extensions to be MV3 - from what I'm reading here, it sounds like you're really not ready for that and should undo it.) Please don't be another https://goomics.net/50/. It's so much worse when it happens externally in an ecosystem.

All GNU documentation is written in this format. But here they seem to have neglected the standard procedure of converting to HTML before publishing...

tbodt··on Please don't use Discord for FOSS projects
The number one problem with matrix in my experience is latency...it's common for loading the app or a room or message history or sending a message to take multiple seconds. I wondered if dendrite might be the solution to this, but the readme says it can handle only 10-100 users, which feels off by a couple orders of magnitude. Is the overhead of decentralization really that bad?
tbodt··on Toki Pona: A Language with a Hundred Words (2015)
The community of toki pona speakers has grown to the point where there is no such thing as an authoritative source, much like a natural language. If you want to learn in depth your only option is to join a chatroom and talk to people. For intro material, there are many free options beyond the official book. https://devurandom.xyz/tokipona/ is quite good.

tbodt··on Google Docs will now use canvas based rendering
It's minimal, not much beyond widevine and a set of hard coded API keys for things such as sync. The code that uses the API keys is all open source, only the keys themselves aren't.

tbodt··on Microsoft in talks to buy Discord for more than $10B
https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/360004109911

They have a switch to turn this off, but then they say this:

> The nitty gritty: when you turn the flag off, the events are sent, but we tell our servers to not store these events. They're dropped immediately — they're not stored or processed at all. The reason that we chose to do it this way is so that when you turn it off on your desktop app it also turns off automatically on your phone - and vice-versa. This allows us to keep things the same across all of our apps and clients, across upgrades.

Why not do it both on the client and server...

tbodt··on Backblaze submitting names and sizes of files in B2 buckets to Facebook

tbodt··on Why Discord is switching from Go to Rust (2020)
I've never seen anyone look into just why Go forces a GC on 2 minute intervals. The code originally appeared in https://codereview.appspot.com/5451057 and there's a bit of discussion on https://groups.google.com/g/golang-nuts/c/WBlJjT-zu7E.

After reading this, I still don't understand. But I find https://codereview.appspot.com/5451057#msg38 particularly entertaining: there was going to be an environment variable to control the interval, which might have allowed Discord to keep using Go, but Russ Cox shot it down.
