tbassetto··on Oldest woman to finish Ironman World Championship in Kona
> It was her 11th Ironman race despite not learning to swim until she was 59 and not starting triathlons until she was 60.

This gives me some hope about learning some new sports late in my life.

tbassetto··on Show HN: Ten years of running every day, visualized
I can somehow convert distances in my head, by pace is harder! If someone has a trick to quickly convert between minutes/mile and minutes/km please chime in.
tbassetto··on Back to our roots
> For most difficult decisions you’ll never know what would have happened if you had done things differently.

This sentence really resonates with me and should live rent free in a lot of people's mind.

tbassetto··on 24 Hours of Lemons
I did not know about that. What's the name of those races? How can I find out more?
tbassetto··on I Block Ads
How about installing an ad-blocker on her iPhone? Do you really believe that all iPhone users browse the web with ads?
tbassetto··on Dansk and the Promise of a Simple Scandinavian Life
Haha, thanks for sharing, I had no idea! :)
tbassetto··on Dansk and the Promise of a Simple Scandinavian Life
Norway has a famous clothing brand simply named "Jean Paul". I've seen a lot of middle managers wearing clothes from this brand every single day. I've even worked with Norwegians thinking it was Jean-Paul Gaultier's own brand. This brand is unknown in France.

Meanwhile in France, every food which has (smoked) salmon on it will be called "Norwegian XXX". Pizza with salmon? It's a "pizza norvégienne". Salad with salmon? It's a "salade norvégienne". The only outlier here is the "omelette norvégienne" which is neither an omelette nor has salmon in it. It's a cake! Also known as "Baked Alaska" in the USA?

tbassetto··on The next step in ecommerce – replatform with APIs and micro front ends
Does someone have a good introduction do micro-frontends? All I see is third-party widgets implemented using iframes or Web Components, and that is usually a nightmare for front-end performance.
tbassetto··on Ask HN: What are some blog posts that you have enjoyed going through?
A lot of articles from Josh Comeau are very good at explaining things and are quite interactive. Last one about CSS Flexbox for example: https://www.joshwcomeau.com/css/interactive-guide-to-flexbox...
tbassetto··on Tell HN: Meetup.com is offering abandoned meetups to anyone willing to pay
This is by design and it happened to the HN Paris meetups I co-organized a decade ago. The new owner was a sales person and completely ruined it by spamming the list and creating new events that were just a cover for sponsored talks/hackathons :(
tbassetto··on Ask HN: Your admittedly useless side projects?
I feel seen. I have bookmarks folders named “To Read $NUMBER” from 10 years ago. Why do they end by a number? Because I create a new folder every time the previous one feels overwhelming.
tbassetto··on A look at search engines with their own indexes (2021)
I switched to Kagi recently (and became a paid user!). Somehow DDG never really clicked for me, I find results on Kagi better.

tbassetto··on DaedalOS: Desktop Environment in the Browser
That's what we did at Jolicloud a decade ago to make a better (different? beautiful? doomed?) OS for netbooks: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joli_OS

The OS booted ASAP to a fullscreen Chromium instance, until we added support for running Linux apps too later on. I didn't work on the windows management so can't say more about this technical side.

tbassetto··on Show HN: My proposal for a new keyboard layout
> the French seem to enjoy using different standards

I chuckled :). How dare they use the metric system and degree Celsius? You got me curious about the WiFi channels though, but it looks like there is nothing specific to France: https://www.lairdconnect.com/support/faqs/what-channels-are-...

tbassetto··on Ask HN: How to match people without storing what they have in common?
Thank you!
tbassetto··on TailwindCSS v2.0
Tailwind UI, by the same authors. But it's a paid product.
tbassetto··on Inline CSS works better in a component world
Correct.

I like the "Controlling File Size" of the Tailwind CSS project: https://tailwindcss.com/docs/controlling-file-size

They DO tell developers to remove unused CSS when building for production of course, but in case you ship the whole (big) default file, it goes from 2309.7K to 180.6K (Gzip) or even 43.6K (Brotli)!

tbassetto··on Tailwind CSS: From Side-Project Byproduct to Multi-Million Dollar Business
> Start putting css in the style attribute while you’re at it.

I think everybody reacts like this at first (including me) :) If you put styles directly in the attribute, nothing is preventing your from using a color that's not part of your palette, nor using sizes that do not respect your UI "flow". Tailwind comes with a (customizable at build time) well-defined sets of colors and sizes.

I recommend watching the 17-minutes long talk "In Defense of Utility-First CSS" for those curious about Utility-First CSS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R50q4NES6Iw

tbassetto··on Climate Change Is Killing Alpine Skiing as We Know It
We have almost no snow around Oslo at the moment, which is quite rare. There are talks about canceling some upcoming ski competitions because it doesn't make sense to use snow canon when temperatures are positive (ºC).

Meanwhile, a company just opened a small ski resort indoors (a bit like in Dubai) 10~15 minutes by car from the city center: https://snooslo.no. The goal is to have it open and at -4ºC all year long. This is so backwards :(

tbassetto··on Selling My Bootstrapped SaaS Business (2017)
Same here, using Safari if it helps.
tbassetto··on Show HN: Browse Reddit in 3D
I was surprised how usable it was on my iPhone, great job!
tbassetto··on Lake found at 11,000 feet in the Alps proves climate change is real
11,000 feet ~= 3350 meters

Also, did we need more evidence that climate change is real? The article has a paragraph about deniers ("people […] cynical about the impact of climate change") but somehow I don't think they will change their mind because there is a now a lake where there shouldn't be in the Alps.

tbassetto··on Firefox 70 released for Firefox Quantum: Developer Edition
I only use Safari on my personal computer. And at work I use Firefox for development, and Safari for personal stuff. I used to use Chrome but nowadays it's very rare (testing something specific).

The thing is, Chrome actually feels snappier than both Firefox and Safari when I am using it, probably because it's profile is empty (almost no extensions, no history, etc.).

I rarely see broken websites, with any browser. And usually it's because of my ad-blocking extensions. Google websites are slower on Firefox, but rumours are saying that it's almost on purpose… (one more reason to not use Google products like Chrome).

tbassetto··on Firefox 70 released for Firefox Quantum: Developer Edition
I saw a tweet recently about macOS power consumption fixes: https://mobile.twitter.com/pcwalton/status/11661937700160798...

Haven't noticed any memory bloat myself though (= it consumes a lot of memory, like any browsers). It's somewhere between Safari and Chrome.
