taysic··on What I learned from reading a thousand emergency room bills
Yet some people believe going to a freer market route would dramatically decrease costs
taysic··on Rediscovering My Daughter Through Instagram
Wow that was beautifully written.
taysic··on Canada has arrested Huawei’s global chief financial officer in Vancouver
I don't think they were insinuating that all Chinese are money launderers but it is a real issue that has an impact on the real estate market. https://globalnews.ca/news/4149818/vancouver-cautionary-tale...
taysic··on The U.S. Yield Curve Has Inverted
The Fed has mandate that has nothing to do with the motivation of the banks. That's a huge difference - they create money for entirely different reasons. And yes, the Fed has an enormous macroeconomic impact obviously.
taysic··on The U.S. Yield Curve Has Inverted
Why would rates go up in an economy that is getting better? Is it only because the Fed would increase rates in response to the improvement? In a free market, I imagine they would go down because people would trust the government's ability to pay back their bills and thus bonds would be more in demand?
taysic··on The U.S. Yield Curve Has Inverted
Banks in theory have consequences for lending more than is reasonably available to them. The Fed really can create money out of thin air. That's a big difference.
taysic··on How cities can fix tourism hell
Where there are historic buildings or city towns there should be a limit to the number of tourists visiting - to help persevere the work (ie walls crumbling under pressure) or simply to make living around the area livable or getting to the area a decent experience.
taysic··on The Remarkable Brain Waves of High Level Meditators [video]
There are also 1 day / 2 day / 5 day meditation retreats for those who are looking for something less intense. Still can be great experiences. I once did a 4 day retreat but left after the 3rd day because I felt good and like I got my dose of whatever I needed. I would say aim for consistency rather than intensity.

Another thing to note is you might need to account for integration time after the retreat.

taysic··on Waymo CEO Says Alphabet Unit Plans to Launch Driverless Car Service
Isn't 6 years quite long for a high tech car? I wonder what maintenance would cost.
taysic··on Waymo CEO Says Alphabet Unit Plans to Launch Driverless Car Service
FYI the definition of jaywalker is "a reckless pedestrian who crosses a street illegally". This sounds legal.
taysic··on Amazon expected to announce NYC and Northern Virginia as new headquarters
I think they could meet those needs elsewhere but they can be choosey so why not.
taysic··on Amazon expected to announce NYC and Northern Virginia as new headquarters
This doesn't really explain why they didn't pick NJ or Boston which are liberal, well educated, incredibly diverse and multicultural. Also the sentiment of "reduce business regulations" goes together with conservative politics more often.

I also disagree that "nobody wants to move to a socially conservative place". CA, Florida, Colorado, Nevada are all examples of places that were conservative or still are but appear to be going through shifts as population moves there.

taysic··on H-1B visa fraud: Sunnyvale man indicted for bringing in 600 workers illegally
Despite you being downvoted, I really liked your points. As someone whose parents came from a tiny country with which there was little to no network once arriving - I can attest to our experience of quickly integrating. I believe it was a good experience for us and a good model for the US going forward.
taysic··on H-1B visa fraud: Sunnyvale man indicted for bringing in 600 workers illegally
Just to be clear... "The limits are calculated each fiscal year depending on the total number of family-sponsored and employment-based visas available. No more than 7 percent of the visas may be issued to natives of any one independent country in a fiscal year; no more than 2 percent may issued to any one dependency of any independent country. The per-country limit does not indicate, however, that a country is entitled to the maximum number of visas each year, just that it cannot receive more than that number." https://www.uscis.gov/tools/glossary/country-limit
taysic··on H-1B visa fraud: Sunnyvale man indicted for bringing in 600 workers illegally
I don't think so - because these larger countries have organized systems in place to bring people over. Something small countries can't benefit from.
taysic··on Google paid Andy Rubin $90M while keeping silent about a misconduct claim
How would a man feel if a male interview invited them to meet his wife and him, who are into polyamory or what not? I feel like the connotations are clear are inappropriate during an interview.
taysic··on Apple CEO Tim Cook Calling for Bloomberg to Retract Its Chinese Spy Chip Story
This is a great point.
taysic··on Facebook to ban misinformation on voting in upcoming U.S. elections
Yes I think the cons of this outweigh the pros. Ultimately, people will stop getting their information on FB if it becomes too obvious it is being skewed unfairly.
taysic··on Trump Just Signed a Law That Changes Life Aboard Airlines
> prohibits airlines from "bumping" passengers who've already boarded a plane;

It's interesting the article says no one noticed these regulations but this one seems like a big deal since there was so much press about those passengers removed off of planes not too long ago.

taysic··on Fed likely to keep raising rates
So are you saying that if the Fed prints $x money, it gets back $x money + interest. It is using the interest to pay back the $x money... and then in theory it erases it from its balance sheet. What does it do with the excess money it collects?
taysic··on Fed likely to keep raising rates
I think doctors / nurses / etc would be very resistant to making less. Not sure if it can be avoided but I think we're not in a good situation where someone could make it big being a video game developer but not being a doctor.
taysic··on Fed likely to keep raising rates
You're saying the cause is an increase in household debt? That would seem to cause inflation, not keep it low?
taysic··on Ask HN: Ex-FAANG developers, where are you now and why?
Don't contractors typically make more than employees simply because they aren't getting benefits? Otherwise I agree.
taysic··on Ask HN: Cheap places to live with a good intellectual atmosphere?
Croatia sadly does not have a tax treaty with the US so one would be paying extra taxes if they were a US citizen.
taysic··on The Big Hack: How China Used a Tiny Chip to Infiltrate Amazon and Apple
Any evidence of that?
taysic··on Ask HN: What did you learn the hard way?
Indeed, always follow my gut comes up again and again for me.
taysic··on Amazon raises minimum wage to $15 for all US employees
We've seen that its easier to act altruistically once you're a billionaire. I think there can be an element of that - but why lobby to force other companies to do the same?
taysic··on SEC Sues Musk and Seeks Ban for His Tweets on Go-Private Deal
It looks harsher when you know the person and empathize with them.
taysic··on Ask HN: How much did you, as an employee, make when your startup exited?
Interesting thanks - is this something recent that has changed? I don't get the sense that this was how it was even 4-5 years ago. Do you think these salaries are sustainable?
taysic··on The European Union versus the Internet
If you want to offer a free product to those who are willing to be tracked and don't care about ad personalization (such as myself) - you can't do so without also offering to free to everyone else. You aren't allowed to ask the second group to pay if they want to use your product - thereby forcing them to offer it for free in a way.
